I'm more comfortable paying a monthly subscription fee rather than being tempted into purchasing gimmicky cosmetic items in a cash shop. As a role-player and as someone who likes to dabble in every aspect of any given MMO I've been disgusted by temporary 'optional' items appearing in MMO cash shops, many of which are then never seen again.
I also find it hilarious to note that many players in games such as GW2 criticise the subscription model of other MMO's and yet pay much more towards cash shop items per month than they ever would on the average monthly subscription fee. As for accusations in regards to the P2P model 'dying'? Utter nonsense - at least three upcoming major MMO's are due to launch with a monthly subscription fee: FFXIV, The Elder Scrolls Online and Wildstar.
