I know great writers who simply enjoy playing in communities). To be frank, it's just a human tendency to do things like this.  People want to be part of the group, but to have the group be "defined," there need to be people who are not a part of it.  Us vs. them. It's the same mindset that you get when someone says, "Well, at least I'm not like her" or "well, at least we don't have anyone who [insert "dumb" RP style of the moment]."
