Good to hear you're able to fit in the nerd when and where you can, it can be interesting to try and sneak it in on the sides. Hopefully FFXIV will be a new good source of it!
If you have a time to do a bit of reading i've got a few links that might help you on your way. the first two are related to the RPC and Roleplaying respectively, then i'll make a couple suggestions about Linkshells/FCs' you might be interested in.

That sizable post is a handbook of roleplay styles, thoughts, ideas and much more put together by Eva, The index is spoiler tagged at the top, and glancing at it you should get an idea of what areas you might like to read, even if you already know most of it I find it a handy way to compare my own thoughts to something else.
Because I like to balance PVE and RP as well i'm familiar with your desire to have the proverbial cake and devour it, so here are a few groups that might help you strike up a balance between them.

"Intermission" is an OOC linkshell dedicated to getting RPers together to talk, maybe find out where some people are, if they're open to having some one swing by, or just strike up conversation in general and get to know the people you might meet out in the wide world.

"Balmungs Finest" is a OOC Linkshell all about that delicious PVE group content, Dungeons, Primals, Raids and the like. Most people will post what they're missing from a group in the linkshell and try to fill up before resorting to the Duty Finder.
As far as FCs go, there aren't many I can mention off hand that might fit, its a fairly large investment (at least for myself). So perhaps taking a look at the linkshell hall and getting in contact with one or two people to talk about what they bring to the table and what exactly you are looking for might be the best way to go about it...

"Harbingers of Dawn" might fit how ever, i've had the chance to meet maybe a half dozen of them and its always went well.
