If I cannot avoid spoilers while actually RPing that is fine. I had a newer player say something to me that got outdated in the ARR before HW content and I just let it slide because I didn't want to ruin such a big story line for them even though technically they were RPing with outdated info.

I can always RP I've been on the road or out to sea or something and had no idea of any of the events.

Right now I level more than I RP because I do enjoy the MSQ so this is more preparing for when I do RP a lot more than I am currently so I probably won't hit any major spoilers along the way.

If you were displaced because of the Ala Mhigo fall/take over and started wandering because of that would that make sense? I've been told there were native SoS in Ala Mhigo, just not sure exactly what their situation was. Or if any of the existing SoS NPCs in the game are people who once resided there.

Without spoilers, I can't really go into detail on what exactly their situation is. I can say that there are large groups of both tribal and non-traditional city Miqo'te in the Gyr Abanian region. M and J tribes in particular. There are also existing Seeker NPCs in the game who came from Ala Mhigo.

When you get to Stormblood, you'll have a chance to find out way more about the situation there, and the Miqo'te who live in Ala Mhigo and Gyr Abania. In the meantime, I can give you some links to Ala Mhigo lore that we knew pre-SB.

Ala Mhigo fell in 1557, which was 20 years ago. Technically, it's still just been 20ish (to 21) years ago. Time passage in FFXIV is very very weird, and not very conducive to RP. I have a post on it, because the topic became a huge talking point following Stormblood, but it has spoilers. If you'd still like to read it, be warned.

The Too-Spoilery; Didn't-Read version is that: FFXIV devs utilize a Simpsons Time Bubble, where events happen but time doesn't move forwards drastically. Lore specifically dates a major event in the ARR MSQ (2.2) as being the 1st Year of the Seventh Astral Era. A major event in Stormblood is said to take place roughly one year after 2.2. So it's still between the 1st Year of the Seventh Astral Era and the 2nd Year of the Seventh Astral Era. Which would place Ala Mhigo's fall still between 20 and 21 years ago.

In what order did the elemental black list Ala Mhigans and the Garlean occupation of Ala Mhigo happen? Would it be possible to be a Keeper of the Moon who resided in Ala Mhigo find out about that elemental ban and then leave right before Garleans take over? Or does that not line up? A cool story might be (and this works for anyone from or who relates to Gridania not just KoM) you live or are residing in Ala Mhigo and find out that the elementals pretty much put the word out no Ala Mhigans are to be assisted ever you get out of there only for the wall to go up and you get completely separated from the people you knew forever.

So could this or something like this be possible?

Keeper of the moon who either grows up in Ala Mhigo or moves there because Males eventually get the boot. Since there isn't a lot of resources in that area you use your familiarity with the Gridania area to make trips back and forth gathering lumber or flora of any kind (could be whatever for sake of the story). On one of your trips the occupation happens and you cannot get back in or link up with the people you know. You spend a lot of time wandering around trying to link up with your old best friend and maybe some family members. You can either RP out this reunion in the live game or say it happened right before ARR.

People more familiar with lore and the timeline please feel free to pick that apart or help me make it lore tight.

This gets really, really hard to explain without spoilers.

But the very vague tl;dr of it is "The Elementals saw the Ala Mhigans as a threat when they came flocking in". Ala Mhigans weren't aware that the Elementals would start throwing a fit. Be mindful that going to the Shroud was the most direct route to flee trough. A great deal of Ala Mhigo's history is build around the fact they are the only land connection between Eorzea and Ilsabard. It was either flee to the Shroud, or into Ilsabard. And Ilsabard is held by the Garleans. So yeah uh... Choice was easily made for them.

The wall was 'only' raised 5 years ago. Garlean oppression was already going on for give or take 15 years. Aaaaand before that they had issues as well what could make people flee for certain, although they weren't running in masses like they did with the Garleans.

I don't know if you see the history of Ala Mhigo as a spoiler, or just the MSQ, so I'm not going to say more here.

It was the Garlean attack and occupation of Ala Mhigo 20 years ago that caused Ala Mhigans to flee en masse across Eorzea. Some fled west to Coerthas. Most fled south to the closest border, which was Gridania and the Hedge at East End. Twenty years ago, Gridania was a very different place than it is today. It was largely isolationist and while today they still have a healthy fear of outsiders, before the Calamity, that fear was far more exaggerated. Elemental law dictated who could enter the Shroud and who could not. There was no such thing as "adventurers" coming and going (because the adventurer movement didn't exist yet), and merchants had to be escorted across the border by Wood Wailers.

So out of the blue, thousands of frantic refugees flee into the Wood. It disturbs the balance and tranquility of the Wood. Chaos ensues, likely, trying to wrangle all of the lost Ala Mhigans wandering the Wood, seeking shelter. The Wood Wailers attempt to gather as many as they can at Quarrymill, to stand elemental judgement. The elementals didn't proclaim an Ala Mhigan-wide ban. The elementals judge each man and woman by the weight and purity of their hearts. The problem was, so many Ala Mhigan's hearts were filled with malice and turmoil that the elementals banned those people and the majority of the Ala Mhigans who petitioned for sanctuary in Gridania. Because these people, in the elementals' minds, presented a danger to the peace and prosperity of the Wood.

One correction: construction of Baelsar's Wall began in 1562, which was roughly 15 years ago. Construction finished on the wall some time before 1572, based on resistance dialogue and the fact that tunnels had long since been under construction under the wall to get around it in the 1.0 version.

Thanks again everyone. I dont consider the history of Ala Mhigo a spoiler, just the MSQ, and since PCs can go there and I know that now I know it must have to some extent been liberated. My friend said "There are miqote in Ala Mhigo" and when I asked how he said "I went there and saw them."

Ok so it would be possible to be a keeper of the moon male who when pushed out of the nest wandered towards Gyr Abania, and for some reason (trade, hunting, guarding caravans) you went back and forth between the two. Having friends in both places. You were lucky and not actually there when the city fell and lost track of your friend(s) and had trouble reuniting with them.

And having familiarity with both regions is it possible to say for a time you helped smuggle people out of Gyr Abania into Gridania to safety/away from the Garleans? You might have been the person who helped get them into Girdania once they hit the border of both nations. And maybe you did this in hopes that on one of these trips you would find your friend.

One other thing.

I see a lot of keepers who have non traditional names. What are some of the reasons a Keeper might do this? I really do love the fact this game has naming conventions, and as a RPer I like to try and stick to them because it helps identify me as an RPer.

That being said some of them are very restrictive and hard to work with in my opinion and Keeper males is one of the harder ones.

So what are some reasons to don a non tribal name and if you choose a non tribal name is it pretty much sky is the limit or do they tend to choose names from X sources?
