1 - People who include smileys in their RP lines (they're rare, but they're there. Sthap!).
2 - The hipocrisy with which people wave the "lore" flag. I get told that RPing the MSQ is against the lore, that RPing a WHM is against and lore and that the devs said so and so.... This couldn't be furthest from the truth to me. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Those who respect the lore the most are those who RP being the WoL and the job he/she is.
I'm not against those who decide to disregard the MSQ and who the game tells us we are, but I think it's time we acknowledge that deciding to NOT be the Warrior of Light IS a form of lore-bending. The game says you are the WoL, so if you decide to be any average joe, you are not following what the lore tells you. And that is FINE, of course, but for this same reason, it is also fine to decide to RP a WoL.
Lore and "devs said so" really shouldn't be used as weapons against anyone, because we all are bending lore a bit someway, no matter in what shape or form. So let's stop considering one side or the other inferior or disruptive or more lore-breaking than the other. Let us embrace the fact that for the sake of enjoying RP, lore needs to be bent someway, and that it's nobody's fault, only of how the game's story was set up (FFXI for example didn't have this Chosen One issue, the adventurer was just an adventurer who happened to be at the right place at the right moment. It was never a case of "you have this special power, save us!", but more a case of "Oh, an adventurer. Just what I needed. Do this for me!").
Is it fine to RP the WoL? Sure. Could it be thought of as inconsiderate to roleplay such an exclusive/special role in walk-up and general public RP? Definitely. Nobody really cares about what people do in more private circles. Still, the simple fact is that running around the Quicksand dropping the fact that you're Hydaelyn's chosen/the Azure Dragoon/Minfilia's ex isn't gonna win you a whole lot of longtime roleplay partners.
As for the lore-breaking bit, you could say that, by the same token, anybody who roleplays the WoL is doing so even when somebody else could also be roleplaying the WoL, thus contradicting the ingame lore that there's only one. I think breaking the lore that says you're the chosen one is far more acceptable than breaking the lore that says it's not possible for a seventeen year-old to be the Godsbow and Azure Dragoon at the same time.
No one of the MSQ RPers I know has ever brought it up in open RP, so I don't get where everyone is getting from with these statements. All the "you can't RP a WoL, you're being a special snowflake" comments have always and only come from either the forum posts or OOC conversations with other RPers, and that's what irks me. Everyone is prejudging that we will go around and about boasting, but nobody has ever actually seen us doing that, because we don't, in fact. So I'd really love to stop hearing these things when in fact, they do not happen.
Also, there can be more than one WoL. The Lore Team has contradicted the game in several things already, and this is just one of them. The lv5 cutscenes shows many other adventurers responding to Hydaelyn's call. Yours just happens to be the one that the camera follows.
But I digress these are all side-things. It's the "you're breaking the lore" statement that I find off-putting, because it is absolutely not true.
Also quick edit: Yes, to claim to be Minfilia's ex would be breaking the lore, because the game tells you absolutely nothing of the sort. What I'm saying is, what the game says is closer to the lore than what the Lore Team says, to me. If the lore team says the Nuhns are rarely the leaders of the tribe, but then I see the U tribe with a Nuhn chieftain and its members say things like "the word of the Nuhn is the law", then I will trust the game more than the Lore Team. If the Lore Team says "only you can be the Warrior of Light", but then I see NPCs talk about multiples Warriors of Light from 1.0 and multiple adventurers responding to Hydaelyn's call (not to mention those that fight primals with me. How do they do not get thralled? They have to have the Echo too.), then I will trust the game's lore over the Lore Team more. If the Lore Team says most of Eorzea is illiterate but then I get a hundred quests where I hand over notes and letters to NPCs and they read them, then I will trust the game's lore over the Lore Team more, and so on.
Remember that the Lore Team is made of people, and people make mistakes. The game is a written story, and it will always same the same thing no matter what, so it's more reliable. Would you trust more to read the story from a book, or to listen it being told by those who work for the writer?
But back on topic: please stop the smileys in RP lines.
To be an interesting, intriguing, well-written character, there needs to be something to allow the audience to relate to them. That is what the problem is with who wants their character to be "perfect". Perfect characters will never be strong, and strong characters will never be perfect, because WE (those who read, who watch, who RP) are not perfect.
