1 - People who include smileys in their RP lines (they're rare, but they're there. Sthap!).

2 - The hipocrisy with which people wave the "lore" flag. I get told that RPing the MSQ is against the lore, that RPing a WHM is against and lore and that the devs said so and so.... This couldn't be furthest from the truth to me. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Those who respect the lore the most are those who RP being the WoL and the job he/she is.

I'm not against those who decide to disregard the MSQ and who the game tells us we are, but I think it's time we acknowledge that deciding to NOT be the Warrior of Light IS a form of lore-bending. The game says you are the WoL, so if you decide to be any average joe, you are not following what the lore tells you. And that is FINE, of course, but for this same reason, it is also fine to decide to RP a WoL.

Lore and "devs said so" really shouldn't be used as weapons against anyone, because we all are bending lore a bit someway, no matter in what shape or form. So let's stop considering one side or the other inferior or disruptive or more lore-breaking than the other. Let us embrace the fact that for the sake of enjoying RP, lore needs to be bent someway, and that it's nobody's fault, only of how the game's story was set up (FFXI for example didn't have this Chosen One issue, the adventurer was just an adventurer who happened to be at the right place at the right moment. It was never a case of "you have this special power, save us!", but more a case of "Oh, an adventurer. Just what I needed. Do this for me!").

Is it fine to RP the WoL? Sure. Could it be thought of as inconsiderate to roleplay such an exclusive/special role in walk-up and general public RP? Definitely. Nobody really cares about what people do in more private circles. Still, the simple fact is that running around the Quicksand dropping the fact that you're Hydaelyn's chosen/the Azure Dragoon/Minfilia's ex isn't gonna win you a whole lot of longtime roleplay partners.

As for the lore-breaking bit, you could say that, by the same token, anybody who roleplays the WoL is doing so even when somebody else could also be roleplaying the WoL, thus contradicting the ingame lore that there's only one. I think breaking the lore that says you're the chosen one is far more acceptable than breaking the lore that says it's not possible for a seventeen year-old to be the Godsbow and Azure Dragoon at the same time.

No one of the MSQ RPers I know has ever brought it up in open RP, so I don't get where everyone is getting from with these statements. All the "you can't RP a WoL, you're being a special snowflake" comments have always and only come from either the forum posts or OOC conversations with other RPers, and that's what irks me. Everyone is prejudging that we will go around and about boasting, but nobody has ever actually seen us doing that, because we don't, in fact. So I'd really love to stop hearing these things when in fact, they do not happen.

Also, there can be more than one WoL. The Lore Team has contradicted the game in several things already, and this is just one of them. The lv5 cutscenes shows many other adventurers responding to Hydaelyn's call. Yours just happens to be the one that the camera follows.

But I digress these are all side-things. It's the "you're breaking the lore" statement that I find off-putting, because it is absolutely not true.

Also quick edit: Yes, to claim to be Minfilia's ex would be breaking the lore, because the game tells you absolutely nothing of the sort. What I'm saying is, what the game says is closer to the lore than what the Lore Team says, to me. If the lore team says the Nuhns are rarely the leaders of the tribe, but then I see the U tribe with a Nuhn chieftain and its members say things like "the word of the Nuhn is the law", then I will trust the game more than the Lore Team. If the Lore Team says "only you can be the Warrior of Light", but then I see NPCs talk about multiples Warriors of Light from 1.0 and multiple adventurers responding to Hydaelyn's call (not to mention those that fight primals with me. How do they do not get thralled? They have to have the Echo too.), then I will trust the game's lore over the Lore Team more. If the Lore Team says most of Eorzea is illiterate but then I get a hundred quests where I hand over notes and letters to NPCs and they read them, then I will trust the game's lore over the Lore Team more, and so on.

Remember that the Lore Team is made of people, and people make mistakes. The game is a written story, and it will always same the same thing no matter what, so it's more reliable. Would you trust more to read the story from a book, or to listen it being told by those who work for the writer?

But back on topic: please stop the smileys in RP lines.

To be an interesting, intriguing, well-written character, there needs to be something to allow the audience to relate to them. That is what the problem is with who wants their character to be "perfect". Perfect characters will never be strong, and strong characters will never be perfect, because WE (those who read, who watch, who RP) are not perfect.

"What makes a strong character is how they deal with their flaws, their fears, their turmoils, their troubles that get in the way. That's what makes them relatable." -- N.C.

[[steps in as a mod]]

I'd like to remind people to keep the thread on topic.

If you'd like to discuss what constitutes a Warrior of Light (and how that definition has changed from 1.0 to 2.0/3.0), I would suggest opening a new thread.

Nothing really annoys me more than people that will start to RP with one of my characters, realize that the character is entirely devoted to his significant other, and then never RP with them again. Well, no. What annoys me more is when people realize the aforementioned and decide to try to weasel their way in by.. well. Doing things, flirting OOC, trying to start rumors/falsify things--basically being a creeper in an attempt to break the characters up through other means.

I really don't mind when things happen IC and they stay IC. It brings a lot of decent and fun RP to the table. But I've found that most of the time, people don't do the RP and, instead, ask me/my partner about us and how long we've been partners and how close we are and what certain characters are like sexually and blahblah. "Will your character ever try to seduce mine? Don't worry I can take care of your partner" and such is just.. lol. Yes, we tell each other everything. No, you aren't being as slick as you think you are. It's just weird and strange and no. Go find your ERP/whatever somewhere else.

Edit: Thought of something else! It's not really annoying so much as I wish people would just stop in general. Many see my character with his significant other and assume we want to be alone/don't want someone to walk up and say hi. It's absolutely the opposite! If we're in public RPing them, we want people to come up and RP with us! If we wanted them to have private conversations, they'd be in the privacy of their home/rooms Smile

On Val's note, another thing I'm reminded of as a RP pet peeve is the impossibility to RP a fail casanova. It must be because this game really offers no way to be physically unattractive, but single people just will not reject me if I try to RP a fail casanova.

No matter how bad-mouthed, sexist, jerk and overall asshole I make Clive, if I try make him flirt with someone who isn't in my circle of friends (who know he's supposed to be a fail casanova), he'll always succeed and never get a no. It's... frustrating. Is it a case of people having very low standards for partners, or do I just RP a fail casanova wrong? Who knows...

There aren't that many unattached male characters, that definitely helps out Smile

I always appreciate running into guys who will flirt, they're not all that common, and its a fun form of RP that fits Aya all too well!

Well, this is just life.  For singles, other singles are vastly more interesting.  I've heard the line, "I'm just married, not dead!" more than once when it comes to recently married friends trying to maintain their relationships to friends.  The opposite is also true: couples tend to hang out together.

Everything else you mention, well, welcome to the low-side of life I guess Smile there are just people like that unfortunately.  They do the same thing in real-life relationships and sometimes they succeed.

Yeah, it's what I wanted to do when I originally created him. But I'm OOCly too uncomfortable to RP beyond the flirting, so that is why I wanted him to fail at it. But it doesn't work, and the person my character hits on gets condescending, and then she wants to get physical and...

There are real guys who are exactly the same.  Unexpected success can make for fun and awkward situations at the same time!

And sometimes you'll find someone who's just happy to flirt back :-]

That's the thing, they ALL seem happy to Dazed, and I can't even tell them "um, could you please reject him? He's supposed to be bad at this.", because that'd be scripting how others RP.

I digress... I just wish girls had a lil higher standards out there! Sure your da wouldn't approve a bachelor like Clive!

On the flip side, I wouldn't mind pushing for romantic partners for my characters... but I don't want it to be the sole drive and would like something like that to happen naturally. I just... don't know how to go about it and I'm actually stymied by the fact that everyone else seems to pair up so easily. XD

Which I guess ties a bit into aforementioned peeves about relationships developing so quickly. Things already seemed to move a bit fast in the relationships Chachan has had (albeit I didn't help much in slowing it down)... but it's like someone else said, you'd see a couple pair up and be wed in under a month. I can only wonder how deep the relationship between the newly wedded couple is when it's pushed that fast (though I'll admit I could understand if it was an OOCly planned "love at first sight" sort of deal).

Really? I seem to encounter the opposite more often. Men who try really hard to portray their characters as casanova/charming/sexy and more often than not come across as, and I will apologize for the term, "fuckbois". There's no bigger cringe RP to me than the gentleman/woman who tries SO hard to make their males appealing that they miserably fail. Too many stereotypical Thancred-wannabes (And personally, I don't really find Thancred that charming to begin with.)

People seem to LOVE playing the "I'm a sexy bad boy and I'm a total asshole but love me" trope. I hate it with passion. Some people can pull it off, but more often than not, they don't.

To be fair, he's certainly had no shortage of prospects ^_^' I admit the idea that there are a lot of unattached characters surprises me, as I see lots of love on wiki pages, so I got the impression there were few unpaired. I tend to have other plans so I'm not eager to let ikemen catboy 2306 put the moves on my precious dumpling that easily, but I'm not totally opposed to it outright if there's sufficient ic reason. (Though lalas thankfully aren't usually in demand.) still, I thought romance was the primary focus for a lot of players

I haven't RP'd with the masses in some time, but here we go. Some of this stuff is repeated.

-RP that just stands there. "MY CHARACTER IS TOO SHY/INTROVERTED/OTHERWISE ENGAGED WITH A BOOK TO TALK TO YOUR CHARACTER!" Well guess what, that means you get no RP. If you're standing there RPing with yourself, and my character has no reason to be interested in what your character is doing... nope, not happening. This RP ticks me off because usually these are the characters that will stand around and judge everyone around them, snooty characters who wonder why they have no friends. Usually OOCly they don't wonder, but the characters themselves are just.. rgh. Then my character, being interested in whatever book is being read, more or less gets told to shove off. What's the point?

-RPers who clearly, blatantly, even admit to blurring IC and OOC into one smudgy line then wondering why nobody wants to hang around their RP. Usually the RP isn't the problem, but my god when that RP becomes the problem it is a PROBLEM.

-Blind/deaf characters who can see/hear. Just why? Dazed (looking at you MSQ)

- The DBZ gotta win every single encounter ever. Yeah, bar fights happen, they do. But not every alcoholic wins their battles. Especially if they've been chugging straight liquor all night.

- Starts with f ends with uta. Not going to elaborate that one.

- "Spys", who stand there and watch your character in emotes, only to run away scared/shy... then later whine about having no friends. Yes yes, being shy is totally endearing, but don't whine after you run away from someone waving and saying hello.

....I now realize why I don't get out and RP with randoms very often.
