Getting back on topic, sorta...

The way I learned it, way back in the MUSH days, was that powerposing -- what I think "autoing" is -- was sort of a subset of godmoding (from "godmode," a la the FPS term, since Back Then, we didn't have no "mod" scene, and we had to telnet to our RP, two miles, on a 9600bps modem, uphill both ways... Smile ). It was basically forcing someone to accede to your wishes, either by narrating result along with action or by "forcing" someone to act as you wish through abuse of the emit system. A very classic case of powerposing was actually on a MOO, where a griefer abused emit to have characters engage in various sex acts.

Godmoding was a superset that covered the "undefeatable super character" business along with powerposing, but powerposing had certain mechanical aspects to it that usually led us to refer to it separately.

And now everyone knows I'm old. Big Grin

Nah, you are correct Freelance. We used 'Autoing' in Ayenee (Yahoo chats) back mid 90's. (We as in Ayenee players)

It is a 'change of the times' sort of thing. Autoing was an 'automatic hit' vs god-moding which was as Freelance said; "Undefeatable super character".

So it's really just a matter of where you came from, what your background is, and how long you've rped. I've used autoing for many, many years. I still consider 'god moding' as something as having a hyper-fantastical character.

This doesn't make these terms wrong. It just means well... You're old. Haha. So like Freelance I fall into the "I am old" camp. And just to edit on; these terms are super subjective. What may be 'godmoding' to one person is something else to another. Again, this isn't to say that one is right or the other is not. Just where you come from.

Anyway this has gotten off topic from the original post, but I did want to address the above. Should anyone want to discuss Ayenee and the terms that generally come from it feel free to PM me.

That term must have gone out of style by the time I was in Ayenee (I didn't have internet or a computer in the mid-90s).  I just remember godmodding from when I got there.  TBH, I didn't find good RP until I moved on to text-based WoD settings and then later when I discovered NWN.

Idunno, I hit the scene around 97-99ish and it was still being used then, into the early 00s when it asploded. Granted, it was likely only used around particular circles then.

I was busy being "normal" until at least 2001-2002.  >.>

I've seen a few people doing the "he would/she would" thing and rolled with it, using my present tense, assuming they weren't native English speakers and didn't quite grasp verb tense. Oops..?

... today I learned what Ayenee is.

I've had a computer since I was young but I didn't get AOL Dial-up until 1997 :o From what I can tell, Ayenee sounds like the old AOL channels?

Feel free to feel old friends!

in AOL in was Rhydin.  (Or Rhy'Din or whatever)  I remember many days of avoiding godmoding rafter sitters in the Red Dragon Inn, or the medieval taverns or whatever.

Wow, RDI. Memories. The little circle of fiends I had there ended up moving over to GemStone III, a text-based game that was on AOL at the time and that I still play today. In Ye Olde AOL days, I was VmprHntrD. I like to think I've come a long way from poorly roleplaying an anime character at the age of 13 to poorly roleplaying a pseudo-anime elven knight at 33.

At least you aren't roleplaying Hideo Kojima as a cat.

It was chat rooms like AOE channels.  They were in the Arts & Entertainment section, primarily.  You had everything from Inns to a slave auction - I'm not even joking.

There were also forums.  And oh my god, the shitposting.  Laugh

Yeah it was pretty prevalent till about 99? Man I started back 96' or so? Maybe 97'? I feel old. It was pretty 'gone' by the time early 00's came around mostly because they started closing down the servers- Yahoo that is. Earlier 90's it was good rp if you found yourself in a decent guild; very nice people etc. Minimal drama but then... Like Rome it all crashed lol. We used to mentor people back then, I think by the time 00's hit there were little to no people mentoring. It was a different time- and thus I am now old as fuck.

I miss it though; it was a fun time. Like you said above, Liadan; there was a lot to be found there. There was also various forms of combat, T1/T2 etc a lot of these terms were defunct by the time 00's hit. Though at the same time- by that point it was long gone the days of yore as it were.

As for the forums; it was a lot of shiposting and cliquish crap. It's why I avoided them.

I remember T1/T2 and I wanna say there was a T3 but it was iffy and a lot of people didn't recognize it.  And yeah, Yahoo basically destroyed it by getting rid of the Arts & Entertainment section.  They probably had good reason, as the entire place was like a Chris Hanson sting on steriods.  There were sooooooooo many underaged people in there cybering left, right, and sideways with adults.  In fact, I seem to recall someone ending up going to jail because their character was involved with a character played by a 13 year old.

Actually yes, I think there was a T3. As for the jail; I heard that as well- and I also heard that was the reason why the chats were closed. But such was rumor.
