How about ANY BODY HAIR AT ALL?! I want to look like I'm wearing a sweater when I unequip my chest slot!

Y-yes pls...

Why don't dudes get beard options at the Aesthetician!?
I just want my in game toon to represent Berrod's body hair so I don't have to describe it every time he takes his shirt off. /sob

Same with Tattoos. I very much picture Dogberry much hairier and covered in old timey naval tattoos.

The only people we can be frustrated with regarding SE's decision is the rest of the playerbase (and ourselves, if we don't have femroe or femlander alts).
This is a dodge.  They made the decision.  That's all that matters in that regard.

Honestly, this issue doesn't bother me much.  Mild personal disappointment, an eye-roll over the visuals of the race itself.  Its not going to stop me from enjoying and appreciating SE products, but the amount of dissembling in this discussion is getting silly.

It's not really a dodge if it's the whole reason for the decision

Yep, SE just decided to give people what it seems they wanted. If there were as many FemRoes as there are Miqo'te, we'd have big au ra ladies.

This is ridiculousness on stilts.  They had a decision to make.  They could have used input as varied as astrological signs, a game of cards, or comparing noses in making it.  The method doesn't matter, the responsibility for that decision lies with them.  That they chose to use a particular set of data does not shift that responsibility to those who generated the data.

I'd kill to be able to actually represent Osk with all the gross-looking torso scars he's got but alas

Bolding, because I think this is our sticking point.

The method DOES matter, they were designing a race so they looked at what races people liked to play, this isn't rocket science

"Hey son, I brought you pizza for your birthday! Just like last year, and the year before it. You've always liked pizza on your birthday."

"FUCK YOU DAD I DON'T WANT PIZZA WHAT WOULD GIVE YOU THAT IDEA"

This has been Analogy Time with Warren Castille.

I'm not sure about all this 'shifting responsibility' talk but...when the ice cream vendor gives me rainbow sprinkles because I asked for them, is it his 'fault' for making the decision to give me the sprinkles, or is it my 'fault' for asking for them?

...there's is really nothing wrong with them making a decision to give people what they want!

What bothers me is the degree of sexual dimorphism introduced simply to appeal to conventional notions of attractiveness: Males can be beastly.  Females cannot.

I don't care for that. The style of the race should make sense as a holistic whole.  It doesn't, and the reason is because they were afraid the player base would reject a beastly female.  I don't see a positive in this, though it is not surprising.

I'm just going to quote this for emphasis because Aya is much better at wording things than I am. This is the reason why I don't like the sexual dimorphism in Au Ra.

Thirded.

I was thrilled when I heard SE were adding Fem!Highlanders and Roes for ARR. I choose to play a Fem!Highlander for 3 core reasons.

1) I wanted to look like a grown-ass woman, damnit.
2) I'm a huge Celtic history nerd, and the Hyurans are based off of Celtic cultures, and
3) Wanted to look disdainful and disapproving of everything, all of the time.

Bryn does not disappoint. I'm still frustrated that I can't actually make her look at least like she's in her 30s, but at least she doesn't look 15. Options are good. From what we've seen, the Fem Au Ra just don't really add anything new. I think that's the crux of a lot of the disappointment.
Re: Dimorphism

If Au Ra are draconic (which appears to be so) relatives the closest we have in RL is lizards. A quick googling and we have this:

Amphibians and reptiles

In amphibians and reptiles, the degree of sexual dimorphism varies widely among taxonomic groups. The sexual dimorphism in amphibians and reptiles may be reflected in any of the following: anatomy; relative length of tail; relative size of head; overall size as in many species of Vipers and Lizards; coloration as in many amphibians, snakes, and lizards, as well as in some chelonians; an ornament as in many newts and lizards; the presence of specific sex-related behaviour is common to many lizards; and vocal qualities which are frequently observed in frogs.

Anolis lizards show prominent size dimorphism with males typically being significantly larger than females. For instance, the average male Anolis sagrei was 53.4 mm vs. 40 mm in females.[44] Different sizes of the heads in anoles have been explained by differences in the estrogen pathway.[45]

That 53.4 mm vs 40 mm means that the males are roughly 25% larger than the females. For a human that would be a male of 6' and a female of 4'6".

From what I have seen the Au Ra are not that extreme and I think a happy medium is achievable.
Heeee, okay. Let's wind it back just a little please ^^

So who made the decision to make a race that looked like races people wanted to play?  Did the players make that one too or was it just inferred, and if it was, by whom I wonder?

Quote:"When we were considering the options, there were mentions of making female Au Ra more stocky and buff. However the data that's been complied about what race and gender are being used, indicate that Hyur Highlander females and Roegadyn females are not used by very many players. We definitely took that into consideration when finalizing the design of female Au Ra."
