So, everyone is excited for Dark Knight because they get to play a...particular archetype...but something has occurred to me.

Thematically, aren't Warriors closer to what people imagine of a traditional Final Fantasy Dark Knight? They deal with an Inner Beast (inner demon!) that they have to battle with to control, or at least the characters in the Job quest do. You know, battle with themselves, so they do not lose themselves. All that Byronic brooding goodness.

In contrast, if they make Dark Knight the same sort of deal, wouldn't there be a thematic overlap? I am thinking a Dark Knight means more of a "fighter that uses dark powers in combat" than "a fighter who is just really sad". Or something.

Despite what the job class quest say, job ≠ personality archetype.

The Inner Beast is not anything grim - it's savagery itself. It's struggling against your human instincts vs. a predatory animal's while feeding off the power that one gives you.

Dark Knight will probably be dancing with the Void, which is a WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLE other ball game. It's probably closer, thematically, to BLM than WAR.

Warriors seem more Viking/Berserker to me then Dark Knight-ish. I mean the WAR quest seems to go out of its way to show the "Inner Beast" is rage and not some demon induced power. That's my 2 cents.

And before anyone says, "How do we know DRK will be void/demon/dark powered?" Its the same way we know a White Mage will be a healer. Its how it always is. Some things will be tweeked but otherwise its all the same.

A fallacy on my part, a lot of people I've seen who want to play Dark Knight want to embrace the brooding aspect of it. I'm not a FF-fu master, so...

Now, yes, WAR is about anger and rage, but thematically it still deals with a 'force from within'. If DRK did the same, they would be similar. Both dealing with internal forces, just different kinds.

Dragoons also possess an inner beast (inner dragon) that can override their wants and needs. Actually, was pretty funny doing warrior after dragoon, got me going "No prob bro, been doing this song and dance already"

It would appear, with exception of a few jobs, that most of these already sort of juggle a balance between human compassion and some murderous drive of some sort.

Personally, I'm looking forward to the class because I just adore "spellsword" classes, and I intend to (or at least will try to) write Steel as a sort who smirks while slaughtering. It's a form of power to gain what she wants, not the impetus for her being a thing.

Besides, I like writing jokes too damned much to make Steel a tragic little monster.

Other jobs such as Monk and Dragoon tend to go with the 'force within' thing as well (Chakras, INNER DARGUN). WAR is honing one's own fury without allowing it to become wanton, directionless rage. Remember, the inner beast is still oneself! DRK hasn't really been elaborated on in the FFXIV universe, but we do know that they will use 'dark magic' and that 'you don't have to be evil to use dark magic'.

I would assume that the Dark Knight utilizes a force from without, rather than within! Of course that is just speculation on my part, given that we don't have much to work with on them yet.

As for warriors, they aren't so much brooders as fighters with short tempers that they have to manage!

Just because you train with weapons doesn't make you a brooder. The way Gus sees it, it's good warriors exist! They're proficient with an axe which makes for a spooky appearance and they can be paid to chop pumpkins up.

I don't think a job type doesn't apply to a character also. There have been conjurer's that are more brooding than warriors! Laugh

I intend to roleplay my Warrior with a grin and a wink. I'm sure there will be moments of brooding, but it will more than likely be masked by the smirk of defiance! Big Grin

I'd like to see a KH style theme for DRK.

On another train of thought:

Information we receive has a high biased based on how we're presented it and from what perspective.

For instance, the way "Chakra" is presented in FFXIV for the Monk story line leans some varying interpretations as to what it actually is and isn't. To the point, it could be inferred is that those who initially followed the Monk path understood their inner strength as Chakra or Chi wherein they're simply manifesting Aether in a different manner than say a Black Mage does. Same thing, different label.

Aether itself has shown to be something that draws out aggression in things heavily influenced/tainted/saturated in it. Further it's pretty much thrown around that Aether is a lifestream/mako/mist/miasma/Star Wars Force-like Final Fantasy XIV phenomena, that can almost entirely be utilized as a universe McGuffin if necessary.

A Warrior could very well, by all means, be channeling their Inner Beast (Chackra/Aether), and using it to strengthen/bolster themselves (wield Chakra/Aether), which really would lend to a lot of the logistics behind Aether in general, wherein they're channeling their inner "beast" is actually them opening themselves to a natural (or unnatural, maybe unrestricted?) absorption of Aether and drawing on the instincts it bolsters.

On the note of similarities to Dark Knight and Warrior... conceptually I simply see a different in disciplines and general perception, the Wild and Untamed versus the Stoic and Calculating, one simply chooses a different path to reach the same "End" (IE: Tank). I think the overall draw really is that a lot of people would rather wild a sword and not that Dark Knight entails brooding or that sort. As it's been said in the thread enough, you don't need a class or a job to be Broody McNohugs or Sir HeartofIce. Also, I think the intention of the classes/jobs released in the expansion was to allow for less Lore restricted roles rather than another "Lone White Mage Snowflake" scenario.
