Welcome to the RPC/Balmung! I'm not positive the actual first post of the mentor thread is still updated, but people still post in it occasionally and I think anyone on there would still be willing to give you a hand. Feel free to shoot me a /tell or approach Elsa in game as well!

Greetings and welcome to the RPC/Balmung! Everyone else has already said the useful things, so I'll just add that there's definitely a substantial EU contingent; due to the way my job works, I'll often be on at the tail end or beginning of their primetime. So feel free to shoot me a /tell in game or approach Elsa if ya see me! Also, if you need assistance with anything for the wiki, I'll be happy to help.

At this point, there's not much difference in Legacy vs Non-Legacy (there's plenty of "maxed" people in both types); server population probably has a larger impact and both Balmung and Gilgamesh are large servers. That said, I think Balmung has a slightly larger roleplay population. Best time to create a character (save your app data beforehand) is around 4-5 AM EST. If ya end up on Balmung, feel free to drop me a /tell or walk up and say hi to Elsa!

Welcome to the RPC & to rping on MMOs! It can take a little getting used to, but it's a great community and FFXIV definitely lends itself well to RP. Feel free to approach or shoot me a /tell in-game if I'm around. -
"Ugh I need to update my character's Wiki"

Sure, no problem. I just took a look at your page. You have the following right now: {{Infobox-character | name = Inessa Hara | image = | imagewidth = 440x353 So, first thing is the "image" field is blank. You need to place an image to display in that field, one that you have uploaded to the wiki. There is an "Upload New Image" button on the sidebar on the wiki (just below the link to RPC Forums). For ease of use, here's a link straight to image upload: http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Special:Upload Browse for the image and enter a final name. For example, "Inessa_Hara.jpg". Remember the file name! The second issue with the above is the "imagewidth" field. You've put the resolution there; you only need to put the width of the image, so the first value (440). Reworked, the initial part of your infobox should be: {{Infobox-character | name = Inessa Hara | image = Inessa_Hara.jpg (or whatever you name your file) | imagewidth = 440 Adjust the imagewidth (the 440 value) to the size you want. I suggest somewhere between 250 and 350. -

Use the following: The ###px section (ie 100px) will control size of the image. If you want something more complicated, but with more control, I posted some examples a few posts up. If you're using the infobox template, and trying to put it in there, add the image lines shown below. {{Infobox-character | name = Character Name | image = IMAGE_NAME.EXTENSION | imagewidth = ### -
Welcome to the RPC and RPing in general! I'd agree with Warren; I always feel more satisfied developing a character than relaying a backstory. Maybe take a look at the wiki & characters there (we all have links in our sigs ), and see what other people have done to give yourself some ideas? Best solution though, imo, is if you're not sure, come up with a base character idea and roleplay with someone in game to develop the character a bit to figure out where you want to go with it; you can always rearrange their backstory later! Feel free to shoot me a /tell in game (Elsa Vanmere) if I'm online.

Old to Rp, New to this Forum. Salutations!

Welcome! Rules are pretty much the same as always; ya can check stickies, but sounds like you're already familiar. And if you're not sure how it's supposed to turn out (combat rp comes to mind, since people have different views), just shoot the person a tell & work it out together. On that note, feel free to shoot me a /tell or approach in game! -
A friend and I had to do this recently. We found the most reliable time to be between 4 - 5 AM CST (10 - 11 AM GMT). Just went into work really early that day, haha. Feel free to shoot me a tell for rp if you manage to get it!

Woohoo, I've managed to get something respectable up with words & formatting: Elsa's Wiki It only took... *glances at clock* Way too long. Why does this stuff always take 4x the amount of time you expected? -
Welcome to Balmung! I was in pretty much the same situation as you following NwN and started FFXIV recently myself; the community here is great. My character is Elsa Vanmere; feel free to shoot me a /tell in game or PM if you're online!

I'm having a similar problem in that the layout is in such a way that when I add photos, it knocks the layout around in weird places x.x... Getting images to lay properly is really frustrating on wiki pages sometimes. There's a couple ways of doing it though, that give you a bit of control. The simplest is: But this doesn't give you a lot of control. So another option is to use the class toccolours on a table. Rather than a lecture on code, I'll just post helpful examples. The following creates a table with a title, a picture, & text. The stuff you'll want to change is in the "style" line. "Float" lets you choose alignment, "Margins" are the margins, "background" is the color (either of the box or the bar) in hex code (look up hex colors), font-size is self explanatory, & the 200px after the image is the image size. Other ones that work, for example for text, are "font=" and "color=". Just separate them by a semicolon as shown. This table is horrible looking, to show some of the styling: {| class="toccolours" style="width: 25em; float: right; margin-left:2em; margin-right:0em; margin-bottom:2em; background:#ffcccc" cellspacing="2" ! colspan="2" style="font-size:110%; background:#8DB6CD" | Image Box Title |- ! colspan="2" align="center" | |- ! colspan="2" align="center" style="font-size:130%" | Text Regarding Image. |- |} Here's another example that places just an image, without a background box or border. You can see in the first "style" line where I added border:none & background:transparent {| class="toccolours" style="width: 0em; border:none; float: right; margin-left:2em; margin-right:0em; margin-bottom:2em; background:transparent" cellspacing="2" ! colspan="2" align="center" | |} Finally, images like this can be moved, but the text will just wrap around it. But most people want the next section to fall completely below the image (instead of the image overlapping sections on the side). To do that, at the bottom of a section with an image, place the line: Hope that helps a little. -
Thank you for both the welcome and the assistance, everyone! I'll definitely try to catch some of you in-game ICly, if I can. I've started to learn where everything is now, at least in the major cities; really enjoying the game so far. Started a wiki page for Elsa too, though not much information on it. I took a small liberty and made the assumption that, in the 1550s, the Garleans would have sent out at least small scouting vessels prior to invading Ala Mhigo. Elsa's mother was a captured Miqo'te turned prostitute who was taken back to the Empire proper then discarded to the street when she had a child. Elsa isn't really aware of that history, though.

Hey everyone! I'm a long-time roleplayer who spent a couple years on NWN & MUSHs (if people even remember either of those), but it's been 2-3 years now and I'm new to roleplaying on MMOs and new to FFXIV in general. What I've seen of this community, though, looks really exciting and since my work has started easing up on me I decided it's a good time to get involved. I think I've spent the last couple days trying to figure out how the game works and what the general lore is (my DnD knowledge isn't helping me much here). I've started to get a handle on it, but there's a lot, so it's a bit overwhelming. I'm in the medium-heavy range on roleplay, but really looking to join the community in any way possible and turn my time here into as much of a social experience as it is a gaming one. I managed to get a character made on Balmung, after a late night session. I'm not entirely certain how linkshells vs Free Companies work yet, or where the best places to meet people are, but if anyone has suggestions on how to get involved and where to go I'd appreciate the pointers. Since I'm following the template, I'm currently a physician in training, specializing in critical care medicine. Prior to that, I worked as a biomedical engineer. For hobbies, I host a writing group for aspiring authors when I'm not working, roleplaying, or sleeping. I'll try for a wiki page soon, but for my character: Elsa van Mere is a Garlean Miqo'te who is the bastard daughter of well-off Garlean father & a prostitute mother. She grew up as a member of some Garlean thieving clans, where she wasn't treated well but she was kept around for her small size and unnatural "luck" (a talent for magic, though since she & most of her group only had familiarity with magitek, she has had no understanding or control of it). Eventually, the thieves were caught and Elsa was given the option of conscription to the army or execution; she chose the former, but deserted upon arrival in Ala Mhigo, where she hid out on the streets until after the fall of Dalamud. She's since learned more about what her "luck" is and snuck upon a ship to Limsa Lominsa, hoping to discover more at the Arcanist's Guild. Elsa's naturally a bit distrusting and usually a bit blunt, with a focus on doing what she needs to to survive. Because of this, she prizes freedom and loyalty above everything else, but can be awkward around others. She's still naive regarding Eorzea, and not sure how to deal with her new freedom; having grown up in Garlemald, the new interaction with beast tribes and her magic is something she's still wary of. If any of the above doesn't make sense with-in the lore, please let me know! And feel free to shoot me a tell in game (Elsa Vanmere); hope to get to meet many of you soon!
