PRELUDE ~ Chapter 0:  A Puppies Pledge

[[File archived in an imperial high school, Garlemald, dated  9-9-1563 6th Astral Era]]

[[Project reportheaded “Why I love the Empire”]]

My nameis Canis Latrans, I was born on the 18th Sun of the Third UmbralMoon, 1548 6th Astral Era, in the Southern Imperial Territory of GyrAbania, formerly known as Ala Mhigo. My mother’s name was Amanda Everett, and my father  Wilrick Boartusk. The greatest day of my life thus far, is when the Great Garlean Empire liberated our lands from its foul leaders. All Hail toHis Radiance, Emperor Solus Zos Galvus, the great unifier.

Beforethe Empire instilled its governing authority, our people were ruled by chaos and destruction. Following the teachings of a mad god who favored destruction, ruled by a mad king who would slaughter his own people, and living under the roof of a mad father who would strictly follow the old ways.  My father and my peers saw me as small and weak, blaming my mother’s western heritage for my size. I was also much better at my studies than the other children who used to push me around and beat me up. I took each punishment I was given by these savages as a lesson, I was a bit of hot metal, and their words and fists a blacksmiths hammer, forging me as I looked to the Sun.

Even thoughI was but a boy, I did my best when the Imperial Soldiers arrived in the city. I do not blame them for their initial distrust of me, to them I too at the time was a savage. I was watching the troop’s camp for days before they finally marched their way in thru the gates. The discipline and respect everyone shown for each other was remarkable and I knew this was the sign I was looking for, the Sun. I pointed out where any resistance fighters were hiding, and I knew the back alleys well from my own time running from my bullies. I give thanks and take much honor in the praise given to me by Tribunal Leonis during this time. It was he who sponsored my enrollment into Garlemald Scholastics.

In thisnow my fifth year in the capital, and first year of high school, I pledge myself to be in service to the Empire and all her Glory. The Empire nurtures my curiosity, and values my inventiveness. I have never felt more at home or a part of something greater than I do here. I will do my best to learn and contribute all I can at home, at  school, and to the Empire. I will work to fulfill the dreams of our Grand Emperor Solus Zos Galvus. To bring forth peace and unity to the world, and end the suffering caused by old world mentality.

Chapter 1: Home Life

Ala Mhigo: 1555 6A.E. , Fall

The sunhad begun to set on another average day in Ala Mihgo. People were stopping to get last minute dinner supplies as shops were closing, children making their way home after the day’s group lessons, all except for one boy who slipped thru the alleyway, sneaking behind the small goldsmithing shop. The boy was adorned in a beginner’s martial arts gi, his back and sides very dirty from constant time on the ground and his hands and head were bandaged.  After a quick peek around the boy made his wayto a bin of scrap and begun to dig around.

The boy knew the goldsmiths saved and re-smelted every bit of scrapped precious metal, but that’s not what he was after. With exclamated joy he pulled from the bin the handle and empty rim of a magnifying glass, as well as a steel spring coil, about the same size as his hand. His joy was cut short quickly as he spotted the other three boys standing in the alley he had snuck thru, all of them already at least a head height taller than him, and wearing the same style of gi he was. The boy clutched his treasures and closed his eyes tight as the others moved in on him… and began to beat him.

It was already dark when the boy finally made his way into his home.  The trip to the medium sized home shouldn’t have taken as long as it did, but with a limp, and dizzy from the blows to the head, it had a way of effecting his travel time.

“Dio? Dio?!” A petite woman adorned in loose fitting robes and scarves turned the corner looking to the door. She had one hand on her swollen belly as she shuffled quickly to the boy, touching his head, looking over his swollen eye and bloodied nose “Oh no Dio I knew you shouldn’t have been allowed into that school, you are far too young!”

A large figure stood in the hallway from where the woman came. The dim houselights on the table doing little to show any features on his face from his height.

“He is not too young.”The man grumbled, “He is just small Amanda. He’ll need to learn how to take these hits if he’s to be a man. Now stop coddling him, Get him cleaned up and into bed, he was late, so no dinner for him. When he can learn to be on time, then he can eat”

Amanda bowed her head, and averted her eyes, nodding to the man. “Of course dear, it is as you say.  Come Dio, you heard your father”

Dio sat quietly in the washroom as Amanda prepared the warm bath, she turned to smile at him, and then noticed him staring at something. Amanda followed his gaze to her wrist, she had pulled up the robe slightly to feel the warmth of the water, but also exposed the deep purple bruising, and some parts around the outside already a tinge green. She covered the exposed wound and went to Dio, pulling off the soiled gi and old bandages. “Don’t you worry about that my dear” Amanda said warmly, “You need be looking after your own after all”

Dio looked up at Amanda and said nothing for a long moment, and she too stared down on the pitiful sight. Dio was a scrawny sort of boy, His blonde hair was fair, but cut off angle as if the one tending to him had trouble with shears, and generally unkempt do to the constant state of being dirty. His tiny body shown signs of bruises both new and old all over, and he slumped a bit in bad posture. Despite his state tho, his eyes, green and bright like a freshly sprouted leaf, and he said lowly to Amanda,

“You are my own, Mother”

Chapter 2: Words of Wisdom

Ala Mhigo: 1556 6A.E. Heavensturn

Dio sat outside his parents’ room, hugging his knees to his chest.  He could hear the heavy breathing of his mother, and the supportive words being uttered by both the midwife and doctor, He stared at the small crack wishing there was something he could be doing other than waiting. It was not long before he perked his head up. Things had gone silent for a moment, Dio was expecting to hear the wail of a new baby brother or sister, stead he heard panicked shuffling.

Unable to contain his curiosity he rose and peeked thru the doorway. The midwife had a bundle in front of her by the table, a cool blue light emitting from her hands. The doctor, and old man with a funny device strapped to his head, seeming to be injecting medicine into his mother Amanda.  Amanda herself laid eerilystill on the bed, pale and sweating, one eye staring blankly at the ceiling, the other, covered by a bandage. Dio began to push in and the door creaked, the midwife looked over quickly to see the look of worry in the boys’ eyes, she raised her hand and he felt the push of wind and the door slammed shut.

An eternity, no it was only around 15 minutes had passed and the door opened. A mountain of a man stood at the entrance, a tiny form cradled in his arms. The man stared down at the boy, a look of stoic hatred could be the only way to describe the look “This Dio, is your sister. Her name is Adhelina. She was born strong.” The man paused long, his free hand clenched tight as he continued. “To strong for your mother to bear. My Adhelina was denied her place in the world because of your mothers’ weakness. Your mother has been denied her place because of her weakness. All that remains of your weak mothers’ legacy is you, a failure. When you finally die, do the honorable thing, and not take someone worthy of living with you

Dio’s eyes began to well with tears, the man whom he addressed as father spit, and stepped forward past him, knocking Dio over as he carried off his daughter. Dio sat, bringing his kneesback to his chest and hugging them as he looked into the dimly lit room, the midwife clinging onto the doctors arm crying as he began to pull the sheet over Amanda’s head. Dio stared until the last second, waiting for her to turn to him and smile like she always had. The gesture never came.

Chapter 3: Allegiance, Part One

Ala Mhigo: 1557 6A.E. , Day of theInvasion

Dioperched himself atop his favorite rock formation overlooking the Garlean camp just north of the city as he had done for months now, eyeing over the troops with his spyglass. In the year and a half since his mother and sister died, leaving him alone with his uncaring father, Dio had taken to living life much more independently. He served his father when told to, took his beatings the nights his father needed to let out his frustrations, but as far as other classes and responsibilities, he has taken to a free reign of living for himself in the back alleys, doing his best to avoid his bullies and the general populace.

Dio took out his notepad and jotteddown todays troop formations and activities. He found these foreigners behaviors and discipline very interesting and attempted to learn all he could about them.  Who was in charge of whom, what they ate, their shift rotations, what all the troops did for both work and play. Everything about the way they lived seemed much more ideal than what was at home. He talked to himself as he took his notes; acting out what he saw, “Ayes sir General Steelhelm. The Steel Chocobos are fed and lined up! Everyone has had yummy breakfast and is up and about! All hands are ready to… to?” He picked up his spyglass and peeked back at the camp…

“They’re coming.. b-by the Twelvethey are finally going to come!”

Dio stuffed his bag in haste andslide down the rocks running as fast as he could back to the city. A few guards stood at the great bridge entrance to the city lazily. They were middle aged men, former monks, as evident by their massive size, and permanently scorned faces, clearly still angry of the destruction of the Fists of Rhalgar some years ago. Dio darted thru the city which laid pretty barren, for being mid-day. Many adults had been up in arms lately, protests and fighting amongst each other for some time now.  He took amoment to slow to a jog and catch his breath as he approached home, and moved to where he left the window open to slip in; he stopped as he heard voices inside.

“ –rth gate. We have the riflemen we could gather and placedthem here, here, and here. After they make their way in we will funnel themthru Main Street, at the south end we have the cannons prepared. Once we take out the reapers, Wilrick you and the others will take the officers standing from the rear. We have engineers on standby if they deploy their vanguards, and replacement cores set so we can turn them to our side. Once all the—“

Diobreathed in and backed away from the window. He thought about what he overheard and began to scout thru the city. He looked up at the tall spires, noting which windows were closed and opened, ran thru his alleyways, seeing were someone had set up makeshift barriers. Dio cursed and sprinted to his hideout in the industrial area to begin preparations of his own in the oncoming attack.

Chapter 4: Allegiance, Part Two

Ala Mhigo: 1557 6A.E. , Day of theInvasion

The Garlean forces made their way into the city, the few guards that were posted at the great bridge entrance had fled. The Troops marched uncontested thru the main gate, in perfect rank and file. A few light lancers made for point with some standard troopers behind them, slowly trudging along behind them were a pair of Reapers then finally the centurions behind them.

In the spires down Main Street, Ala Mhigan musketeers made ready. The invading force had not yet turned made their turn to parade to the capital building. Just as the First troopers came into view, there was an explosion in the first alley to Main Street. Dust billowed from the once barricaded pathway.

“ENEMY ATTACK!” Called out one of the lead lancers and theybraced themselves, and rushed into the alleyway to investigate. The remaining parade halted and took defensive posture.

“Who was that? Who fired?!”  One of the Ala Mihgan snipers asked in a hushed panic as he ducked down with the others. “It wasn’t me!” another said, “It couldn’t have been any of us they were out of range! And that was an ex—“. The  Sniper was cut short as their spire light upin red light and smoke, a signal flair shot thru the open window. Below there was metal humming sound, the telltale sound of a Reaper turning and opening it jaw, charging up a blast.  “RUUUUUUUUU—“  The sniper began to yell before the spire exploded into billowing dust.

Teran Tol Leonis,  the lead officer on this attack, garbed in red and gold armor crested in a lions design watched the battle begin to unfold from his preferred space in the middle of the formation. He always preferred to be in the middle, not because of its safety, but so he could convey his will more easily from the front and the rear, and move quicker to wherever he was needed. “Something is not right. That signal was not given by one of our men.”

To Terans right was a woman, garbed in standard centurion armor glanced down at her info pad. “What do you mean sir? Clearly it was given by one of the spotters up front.”

“No my dear” Teran pointed down the street and to the opposite alley. “Mira take a small squad and scout the southern side of the city. Report back to me what you find.” The woman bows and tucks her info pad away. “As you command my lord” Mira whistled and circled an arm over her head, four nearby troopers rallied to her and gave chase as she made her way away from the main force.

Dio reloaded the flare gun as he began his jog down the back alleys of Main Street, mapping out the city in his head as he ran. He knew by now the nests down Main Street should have been cleared by now, but there was still the matter of the large cannon awaiting the Garlean’s at the capitol building. Dio raised the flare gun to the sky and fired off a shot , a blue signal light bursting in the air. Dio gasped as he turned hear a woman yell “STOP HIM!” He caught a glimpse of the soldiers kneeling and taking aim, he scurried and slipped to the side sliding down a gutter way just as shots rang out.

“Sir, this is Mira Qua Jai reporting in, we have a rebel using one of our flare guns, recommend we switch to standard communications. We are in pursuit now.”   Teran acknowledged Mira’s report andsignaled the main forces to continue down the main street. He looked up at the blue flare still lingering in the sky, it was the signal to advance with caution, as enemy forces were still present. “Well this is turning out to be a most interesting day.” He said aloud as he checked over his old fashioned revolver, running a rand over the rotating cylinder.
