Englishman in (e.g. visiting) New York

So I'm considering a short city break in New York the second week in November with my wife and adult son, my daughter is already elsewhere in the States visiting friends. I've been to the Las Vegas and Florida before, but never New York. So during a 4 day trip what are your suggestions for must see attractions?

 

Also any other ideas, advice, comments, suggestions. For example, I'm looking at hotels near Central Park but would it be better to stay further out and travel in?

Ooh I've only been to the city a few times but I always stayed somewhere else and commuted in, did my sightseeing and went back in the late evening. I'll ask my sister tomorrow if she has any suggestions since she knows it better than me.
