  1. Lots of good stuff here. I particularly like the persona/strict categorization. My expectations and style of RP predominately come from playing D&D, which I think matches the persona. I enjoy playing as a character where I set their motivations, but their circumstances are set by someone or something else. This gives me an opportunity to come up with how my character responds to the circumstances and changes as a result. I'm lucky enough to have found an FC that's perfect for that style: the officers design an overarching "campaign", allowing its members to figure out how their characters take part in and react to the story (and by extension, to each other). I think one of the biggest challenges for RPers like me is trying to be less "reactive". I can't speak for anyone else, but when I started RPing, I was under the impression that the only thing I can control is my character. I still have trouble coordinating with other players to help me tell a story about myself, or emote-ing NPCs to drive my story forward.
  2. I'm interested in hearing how other RPers with research-oriented characters manage and keep track of their characters' accomplishments. It seems that a lot of my character's research ends up happening behind the scenes, and it's hard to bring other people up to speed on her work without it seeming like I'm lecturing them. Further, I often keep things super vague to avoid making "discoveries" or "inventions" that break the lore or fall into power-gaming. Does anyone else with a research-oriented character encounter similar issues? How big a deal are they and how do you resolve them? How do you get other RPers involved in your research (especially if they are non-researcher types!).
  3. I was legitimately humming the haunting drone from Wizardry V the whole time I was in the dungeon (and tensing up while expecting a jumpscare encounter). gDc8iBxnuDs

  5. Scarlet is a dedicated researcher, but recognizes that taking a break is essential for a healthy mind and success in one's work. Further, social connections have an important role to play in the spread of science and information. It stands to reason that she partakes moderately (and regularly) to help take her mind off of her work and make socializing easier. She doesn't often drink to excess, but if she does, she may open up about her guarded insecurities around mortality and attachment... ... though it's more likely that she'll loudly remind you and everyone in earshot that no matter what you all decided to do with your life, none of it matters, nothing lasts forever, and in your wake will lie countless dreams: unfinished, discarded, and never touched at all!
  6. Scarlet: Her pet chocobo died when she was a child and now wants to live forever to compensate for the tragic loss.
  7. Hey everyone! It's nice to finally work up the nerve to make an account and say "Hi", so here I am jumping in with both feet! I'm not new to RP, but I'm very rusty. I've played MUDs and Tabletop RPGs, but those have always been with very small groups of people... it's a bit intimidating (but also inspiring!) to see all of the in-character activity happening every time I pass through the Quicksand. I've been wanting a creative outlet for some time, so I'm going to give this the old college try. My character is based on an archetype I've played with a few times in D&D campaigns. Scarlet is an alchemist who has devoted herself to finding a "cure" for aging. Her own mortality unsettles and terrifies her to the point of obsession, so she has decided to put everything else in life "on hold" until she gets this problem out of the way first. I've always been the kind of person who enjoys playing a game, and then reminiscing in-character about the events that have taken place. My comfort zone is live dialogue and improv, since I usually think longer pieces of prose to death before they get written. Part of why I'm here is to get a bit better at it through exposure and practice - so here's to self improvement! Hopefully I'll see you all soon!
