Totally went from bad to impossible today. I think we're out until the fix. I'm hoping they at least postpone the summer event until everyone gets a chance to log in.

I agree with Rock on this one. Put down Michael, but then just ask to be called Mike. That even adds a level of immersion to the game, having to tell people every time they use your full name. That said, there are always exceptions to lore, and Mike is even reasonably close to a run-of-the-Lore-mill name. You wouldn't be offending anyone if you stuck with Mike and had an IC reason. Follow your gut, and don't look back.

Themes from previous Final Fantasy titles used in FFXIV

Definitely a nod to FFII when you go visit Minfilia. The password is Wild Rose. -
Welcome, Kisumi! You'll fit in great - there's a huge variety of RPers here. Check the Linkshells link above if you're interested in finding a group. There are lots of options to pick from.

Welcome! Now, to answer your questions: - I'm doing very well, thank you! I lifted weights for the first time in a few months, so maybe a little sorer than I'd prefer, but nothing I'm unfamiliar with, haha. - In general, a majority of players go with the damage-dealing classes, but parties naturally have more spots for these roles. So...the only caution I could give is that a lot of Legacy players are going to flock to the Arcanist class right off the bat. But don't get intimidated about that. If anything, you'll just have a lot of people around you to help you learn the ropes! - The Hyur and Miqo'te races are far and away the two most popular races. Elezen seem to be the least popular, particularly women (who tend to have teeny heads). Roegadyn are also pretty darn uncommon. Again, females even moreso. - When did you request the Beta key? If you registered back in July, I think you should already have it. August people might have to wait until the 17th, when registration officially opens again. At that point, you should get it pretty much instantly, or you could try applying again. - Explore the Linkshells section of the forum: it has a wide variety of groups there. (Some of them also have Free Companies for more guild-like involvement) There are definitely options that would cater to your off-and-on schedule. - You'll find RP on virtually any server. There will be a good number of RPers on Gilgamesh, but the general (and Reddit) population will also be extraordinarily high over there. If you're looking for the highest RP per capita, that will most likely be on Balmung. Be forewarned that Balmung is a Legacy server, though, so there will be a lot of lv50 players around while you're still at the very bottom. Whatever you choose, you'll have a good time, so don't kill yourself over the decision. I'd honestly recommend looking for the Linkshell that you like most, and pick your server based on that. You're always welcome to start a character on both, too! Hope that helps, and I hope you have fun!

No worries! Let's sit back and enjoy the game. And yes, I'm excited for the full OST as well! I wonder how much is going to be carried over from 1.x.

These are great! Are you planning on doing more? If so, are you taking requests (*cough, Thanalan Field 2 and La Noscea Field 2, cough*)? Keep up the good work - you've got a lot of people behind you!

First Time Making A RP Character, critique me?
Syggfryd replied to hypatiala's topic in RP Discussion
Did Mommy get a name change? I do like the story so far. Leaves a lot of room for discovery. Where in LL does she want to go to learn about the primals? Just the Arcanists' Guild? No need to worry too much about lore here, as there would certainly be several volumes on Primals available. (On a side note, I'd be interested to see how accurate the drawings were!) Also, Welcome! There's access to a wiki up top, a useful place for you to pool up more of your thoughts (and come back to when you forget something!). But if you're looking for feedback, you've come to the right place. I'm in the process of making my first RP character, too! It's challenging, but there isn't as much "you need to change this" feedback as I initially expected, which is always a pleasant surprise. -
There are two primary factors: 1) He's just morally opposed to the idea of stealing and violence of that nature. 2) He was forced to join a pirate crew right when he came of age, which basically crushed all of his future dreams. Needless to say, he ditched the crew as soon as he found an opportunity, hence the negative karma.

Nice little background. My little Sygg is an experienced fisher as well, and scorns pirates, though for different reasons. He's not really out to get them or anything...rather, they might be out to get him... ...Now you're giving me ideas on how our stories might meet up somewhere! Just when I thought I had it all planned out!
-
Hi! New RPer for similar reasons. I'll go read the background story you have right now!
-
Welcome! Think about going Roegadyn! We're a bit lonely out here. We're a hearty, loyal bunch, though some say we're a little violent. Bah, lies, I tell you! Plus, we've got the coolest names! :tonberry:I just wanted to hypnotize you...

Welcome! You'll be in good hands learning the ropes here. Don't be afraid to speak up/ask around if you need help with something. And you can always search the forum if you aren't sure whether someone has asked something already. This is also my first MMORPG. I've finished basically all of the other Final Fantasy games (minus XI and a couple of the handheld spinoffs), so you could definitely say I'm in this for the FF name. I figured the RP aspect would make for an awesome supplement - and so this is my first time RPing. So far, it's been a blast, and I haven't even done anything in-game yet! Do you think you'll be interested in going through the main storyline? I think it's going to be really cool to uncover a lot of Eorzea's mysteries. Well, good luck with your first MMORPG! Hope to see you around!

I'm in essentially the same situation (with a very similar system) and have found ways to tweak the settings to make it better. Fiddle around especially with things that require memory (i.e. the grass and textures) and see if you can get ok results with the computer. From my experience, the PC version at its lowest settings (if at an ok framerate) still looks a hair better than the PS3 one. Playing on the go? Make sure your battery can handle it! (And make sure that the fan isn't prohibitively loud, haha)

You ought to be careful, since the language is modified a little. If you know German, make sure you study the changes to the language in Roegadyn. Oftentimes the change is just changing a few consonants and vowels up. Use these patterns to craft new words if necessary. And, to be honest, I'd say you can always say it's "Engladyn," so to speak. In other words, just because you're saying it doesn't mean it's the proper way of speaking ancient Roegadyn. I really like your idea and will probably incorporate the same thing to some extent! I was astonished that the word "mother" had been lost over time...I'm guessing it would have been "Muttyr," based on their changes to other words, but it's technically not in there. Technically, it is logical that "mother" isn't used in names (though "wife," "daugher," "maid," etc. all are), but I just find it weird that such a fundamental word would be lost before so many other obscure ones.

23 years old from California here (well, I'll be 24 by launch...). Welcome, and hope to see you around some more! Definitely post some background about your character, particularly if you need some help with the creative process or the lore-mining process.

Good stuff so far! I'm making another Sea Wolf character, Syggfryd Eyriwilfsyn. Good to know he has some living, breathing brethren somewhere out there! He's from a village that has recently elected to return to their pirate roots after generations of being peaceful and honorable (a strong minority strongly opposes this new policy, but the elders ordered it). He's training to be a Marauder, for the time being, but that's more because he's been forced into it than anything else. He interprets his name as "peaceful victory," to give you an idea of his actual intentions. Anyway, is anyone else struggling to find good Sea Wolf/Roegadyn lore? Here's all I have: The game says that they used to be violent pirates and raiders, until Limsa Lominsa's armada put them out of business. It then continues that they are often sailors or mercenaries at sea, that they used to live up North on some islands as fishermen (and Roegadyn still exist there), and that's about everything, besides naming conventions. One can speculate that they populated all of the area around Vylbrand and Northwestern Aldenard (on the Strait of Merlthor and the Indigo Deep). The Hellsguard have lived in the mountains of Dravinia near Sharlayan, so it would make sense for the Sea Wolves to be nearby. BUT - rumors of a Garlean invasion of Sharlayan at some point between Silvertear Lake 20 cycles ago and Carteneau Flats 5 cycles ago mean that any Sea Wolves who lived nearby have likely fled South somewhere else. This is what happened to Sygg's village and is the main reason they had to take to being pirates. If you guys have anything else to add lore-wise, I'd love to hear it! I'm really struggling to find stuff.

I. Basic Info Characters: Syggfryd Eyriwilfsyn Primary character: (same) Linkshells: Finalizing that right now. Primary RP linkshell: (same) II. RP Style Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy): I'll probably get medium to heavy. However, I'm pretty tolerant of OOC behavior at any time. Likewise, I'm accepting of always-IC behavior, though I feel like that could inhibit real-life communication in some situations. It's all a game in the end, haha. Views on RP combat and injuries: I'm new to RP, but I don't see a problem with a little in-game violence if it comes up naturally. That said, I won't typically provoke, and I may even actively try to avoid fights. The game only addresses interpersonal fights in PvP, which might not be everyone's cup of tea. So...I guess I would prefer fighting via text, rather than trying to pantomime with emotes, except perhaps when the emote is used in its appropriate context. I look at injuries much the same way. If they ought to happen as a consequence of something, make sure it does happen. As far as visual/textual cues: I don't care if I see someone, described as, say having a broken leg and crutches, walking around uninhibited. It would be distracting to see someone dancing around the street pretending to be hurt. We have to work around the limitations of the game, and we have the power of words to assist us. Also, should you approach me for a fight, remember that I'm playing a physically capable Roegadyn male... Views on IC romance: I see how casual hookups could happen in-game, but I don't think that's my cup of tea. I'm certainly not one to call out a real-life couple playing as a couple in game, or something similar. But long-term relationships must be difficult to pull off IC. It ought to have a realistic buildup and appropriate dynamics. Please, keep the dirtiest stuff off the streets. Views on non-romantic RP (family ties, etc): Cool concept, but I think it requires careful planning to pull off. Views on lore: Try your best to make your story fit into the world, but don't be afraid to take some artistic liberties. I'd even love to see people fit the main story into their own stories. (In a spoiler-free way, of course!) Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc): I'm very new to RP-ing, so I'm going to adapt to whatever is thrown my way. I'll be extra cautious to respect the community and follow their examples, of course. III. Other Info Country: USA Timezone: PST: UTC-8(/-7) Contact info: [email protected]

That sounds hardcore to the point that it'll get boring! Haha, you're a brave soul. Do you have an iphone/ipad? You can play touched up versions (to varying degrees) of I-V just through the app store. I think I-IV are also on Android, though III and IV are the only two acceptable ports, as far as I'm concerned. Here's my evaluation on the whole series: The PSP ports are solid for I and II, as is the GBA version. I'm not going to endorse Origins for PSX because I hate the load times on all of the PSX ports. Definitely aim for the DS/iOS/Androd/PSP version of III. I'd recommend the PSP for IV (with the DS/iOS/Android version being a superb second choice), as it holds to the original vision the best. For V, definitely get the iOS one if you can. Otherwise, I'd recommend the GBA version for completeness. PSX Anthology version comes in a distant third, due to its inferior translation and lag from disc reading. VI is certainly most refined on GBA, but the small screen size and fudged-up soundtrack could be deal-breakers for you. If GBA is a no-go, I snagged a complete FFIII box (map, Mog poster, and booklet) for SNES for like 30 bucks last year. Go vintage, or go home . Again, I won't endorse FF Anthology due to terrible lag from the disc. The Steam version of FFVII has a terrible "touch-up" on the soundtrack. Definitely look for a mod to fix that. Also check out the PSN version, which might be cheaper... VIII and IX are easily accessible on the PS Network and playable on PSP, Vita, and PS3. You can also find them for reasonable prices in their original PSX format, I believe. X and XII are fairly cheap to buy new (you're in luck) but require a PS2 or backwards compatible PS3. Or you can emulate. You could always wait for X's remaster for PS3/Vita this winter. Well, XIII was designed with the PS3 in mind (and maybe optimized for that system), but both PS3 and X360 versions are equally playable. Say hi to :cactuar: and :moogle: and :tonberry: and :chocobo: and :bomb: and :ahriman: for me!

I finished II last winter and was pleasantly surprised how well the second half played, once the initial grind had set your characters in their tracks. In fact, I would definitely call FFII the most underrated of the bunch. Stick with it! It gets much better. I really appreciate the lore-rich and open atmosphere of FFXII, and that's the reason I'm here right now. It's hard for me to pick a favorite FF, per se, but I'll give VI the nod, with Iv, V, IX, and XII barely trailing behind. I'm hoping for some pretty nice tie-ins to the classic FF's, and they do seem to be on their way with nods like the Crystal Tower and (*groan*) the mysterious appearance of Lightning from XIII. Look into A Song of Ice and Fire if you want a good, long read. Now, there's an epic fantasy with plenty of history and intrigue. Too bad the series is years away from a conclusion...haha. Hope to see you around in the world (I'm settling down in Balmung)! Any ideas what kind of character you'll be bringing to the table? I'm assuming you'll at least be trying a little roleplay, since you're here? I bet we're kind of in the same boat.

I'm afraid to say he will never be particularly happy and giddy as a marauder, and that his mother's suspicion was spot-on in that regard. However, I can attest that he is eager for something. The rest will have to wait until launch, as many pieces of the puzzle will come into play only when he's set foot in Limsa Lominsa.

Welcome! Hope you enjoy yourself as well as your experience with FFXIV! Start reading up on Eorzea and its history (the wiki on this site is a solid reference to begin with) to get a taste of what's in store. But keep in mind there is much more to the world of Hydaelyn than traditions and complicated histories - endless possibilities await those who come in!

Hey, all! I'm a longtime Final Fantasy player (I've made it through all the numbered titles, plus a few others, minus anything online up to now) and a newcomer to the MMORPG/RP world. However, I can already tell that this place is going to feel like home pretty quick, and that I might be involved at some level for years to come. I might pick up some good friends along the way, too! My interest in FFXIV is actually pretty recent. During most of 1.0's run I was buried deep in college work and didn't have more than an hour or two a week for games. The critical and general response to XIV certainly didn't convince me that I needed to find time. However, my graduation last year opened up a little more free time on my end. Enter promotions for FFXIV: ARR, and then giveaways for beta codes. I got on Ultros for the final weekend of phase 3 and had a blast for 3 days. I logged close to 30 hours, which is unheard of for me in a 3-day period. So, I started looking for a home. The quirkiness and tight-knit nature of the RP servers caught my eye, and I figured, heck, I might as well join in the fun! A little about me: Am I missing anything? Ah, yes, Syggfryd! I'll introduce him! And that's all I have for the evening! I look forward to getting to know you guys as time goes along.
