  1. One pre-emptive welcome to the community for you then! Balmung's been a great server and a good place to start an MMO adventure. The community has been over all really nice so far and roleplay seems to be just about everywhere. It will take a couple of RP sessions to get the hang of but it's not to far removed from the old tabletop ideas of story crafting and adventuring. If you need any help or want to join up in some of the arcs I host feel free to hit me up in game as well when you land on the server.
  2. Welcome to the server! Balmung is a cruel mistress making folks wait till the latest hours of the night to take part of it's bounty, but it is well worth the effort.
  3. As in all things there is a balance to it. For a lot of RP'ers Drama is the life blood and usually fuels the conflicts of their stories and this can lead to some amazing moments where a character becomes more then the player ever thought they'd be or they grow closer to the people they've been telling these stories with. In my experience a lot of these stories end on happier notes even if the story arcs themselves were very dark and sad. I've had the great pleasure of being part of a few long arcs where the protagonists were dogged at every turn and the few victories to be had were narrow. For me these had a great deal of excitement and engagement during the events, and then between the events we had a lot of humorous moments and time to digest what all was happening in the events. And then the conclusions were sometimes happy, sometimes sad. At the beginning of an arc I was part of not to long ago my character, the 'father' figure of the group, died at the outset and it lent an amazing sense of weight to the proceeding RP. The arc centered around a terrorist whom after a few more horrific events the group had found and killed, leaving a very powerful sort of bittersweet ending. Of course to have those big impactful events there has to be a balance, because if all we had were those twists and turns it would become the norm, and to make it impactful again we would have to do something even more extreme. Though the above is admittedly in a preformed group of people, we all knew the general direction things would go. The OOC communication to pull off this sort of thing is very important, because while you don't have to give a play by play version of the arc people knowing that it's going towards the dramatic I have always found to be polite and help things go more smoothly.
  4. This was a splendid event, thank you for putting it on. I had a great time!
  5. I reckon I have lurked long enough, I swore I had made an account about a year or so ago but for the life of me I can't find it now, so here we go. Howdy all! I'm Harrow, recently returning to XIV with my crew from Wildstar. I actually played this game first and while my preference my brother wanted to give Wildstar a go, and since we hadn't mmo'd together properly in years we did so. The experience and time spent was invaluable, but it was time to move on and I did so not just with the brother but two of the best people I've had the pleasure of meeting as well. We just recently got everything transferred over to Balmung and are in the sorting/leveling phase before starting up a group of our own. Now I had just put that form in my inventory and... Aha! Here we go now! Warning, it is a bit of a wall of text. --MMORPG background I started playing MMO's with the old DDO. There I was primarily a cleric and luckily enough wound up in a great and caring group. I was eventually our main healer (Having changed over to favored soul) and learned a great deal before the guild shutdown there. I went to a lot of different MMO's after that. LOTRO, Rift to name a few. It's ironic in a way that despite the MMO hopping I haven't spent much time at all in WoW (a few days because of a trial thing for a friend) So when TOR came around it seemed pretty new to me. I headed up my own guild there and found some success before the server merges. I floated about and wound up in an amazing Mandalorian RP group for about a year before leaving for GW, from GW to Wildstar and now here! --RP experience I've RP'ed for long enough to forget when it all started! It started out with DnD like things when I was pretty young. I played an uninteligent half-orc barbarian and had a great time. From there I've played a lot of warriors, poets and romantics of varying styles since TOR. --Character ideas/info My main is Eric Rosethorn, a military man who became a pirate after suffering a great personal loss in his former family. His once 'flowery' speech has mostly been replaced with simpler and direct patterns, a light version of Lominsian dialect for ease of reading/writing! A great beast destroyed his ship and killed much of his crew, he's just now finding the survivors and planning vengeance against it while they get back on their feet again as pirates and adventurers. I'm hopeful to get to explore the ideas of loss, anger and in the long term hope/redemption or the fall/damnation. Alt-wise I will probably go for a mad genius type character, someone with a great mind but is a bit bent because those kinds have always been great relief characters for me. --How did you learn about the coalition? Google. When the game was coming out I figured there would be one server or another the RP community would gather, and that led me here to a few posts about it. --What kind of a role-player are you aiming to be? Light, medium, or heavy? I would like to trend towards the heavy side in this game. I do intend to participate in end game content, but not on a hard raiding schedule. I would adore to get a certain slice of life element into my rp, and a strict raiding schedule would not be helpful for this! --Anything from real life you're comfortable with sharing? (Work, school, hobbies, etc) Ah shoot. I'm co-owner of a small photography company and owner of a start-up gaming company as well. These two things keep me occupied pretty well IRL. I'll be moving up to Austin TX early next year to set up the gaming company in full and expect to launch our first game late next year if all the schedules hold up! It's really exciting, but draining, I'm very much looking forward to having an MMO for my 'escape' time again! For those that made it through all of that a cookie to you good sir/madam! I look forward to meeting many of you sometime soon!
  6. Oh dear... I feel better now, I'm not the only person whose done this! Generally my mistells happen in Skype when I'm trying to rp with two different people late at night which would be rated more of a 1/10 then anything good. ( Also can we make like an official rating system? 0.0 it would be great ) There is a couple though, one was when I had first started playing mmo's my now ex-girlfriend needed a cleric for her guild and had decided I was just nerd enough to get into it. I was flirting with her in party chat while I was turning in quest objectives and posted it in the general chat channel. The guys that were there to listen were great about it, even if I never lived it down, but let me tell you anything like that I check prodigiously before I send it now.
  7. Now that I have a working understanding of the game I think it's time I start to make myself a part of things in the community. I would love an invite on Oran Swordbreaker may be a bit quiet as I acclimate but I'm excited to start telling stories with people again!
  8. -whistles- Wow! That looks like a lot of content, though kind of disappointed the housing is just for FC leads. Have that old itch to play house and make things right pretty, ah well. Maybe they'll let me scratch that itch in the near future. I do find it good that they seem to have that many new things coming out in the update gives me hope that they will be able to put a lot of things out and keep the game growing for a long time.
  9. Hey all, Oran here fresh of the boat in this new and exciting game world. I haven't been playing long but I seem to have become hooked. It's been years since I've had this much fun in an mmo and while I have a lot to learn about the game and it's nuances I'm happy to say I think I'll be here for many years to come. I'm a long term roleplayer, started out playing pretend as a child and never really grew out of it. I've been actively roleplaying in mmos for four-ish years. Started with light rp with my raidgroup in DDO and moved into hardcore rp-pvp in TOR. Since I left TOR for health reasons ( fell really ill and by the time I recovered my clan had disbanded ) I've been in a few mmos for rp. GW2 is probably the most prominent where I led a small guild from shortly after launch to disbanding about three months ago as people moved from the game. Never ran into anywhere that felt like 'home' again until I arrived here, just one of those feelings of 'this is the right place for me.' Now I'm slowly reading up on the lore and playing the game and figured I'd start reaching out and being part of the community! Currently I'm playing a character called Oran Swordbreaker on Balmung as I get used to the game. I hope to see you all in game sometime! TL;DR New guy here, saying hello and I hope to see you all in game sometime soon.
