  1. I've used it, and in a weird way, it's ic. For Teryaani, the change wasn't caused by the fantasia itself. In this case it's an entirely different person stealing the name of a fallen adventurer as an alias in the hopes of hiding from her own past. She saw the person meet their end in Ul'dah and they weren't particularly famous or infamous. After all, she had never heard of them. Sure a syndicate wanted them dead, but they know that they killed their mark right? It's the perfect plan and there is no way it could ever go wrong!
  2. I don't have a well-defined method for determining this, it's a feeling sort of thing and depends on the role I'm in, who I queued with, and the duty. Maybe something like this: Assuming I'm queuing solo and the healer is leeching/esuna-ing (if available at that level) and keeping up with things I'll probably hand it to the healer first. If the healer is just going through the motions or is doing terrible things (fluid aura for no good reason, sleep-walking through the duty) or I'm the healer and the tank is keeping things off of me then I may hand it to the tank. Failing these or if the dps is really solid then a dps will get my commendation. I wish I had metrics for it, I suspect that it's a pretty even distribution between roles though (factoring in that I normally am queuing with a healer in most duties).
  3. I tried to leave the sidequests for alt levelling where I could. For me they were basically gone after my 2nd class got to 50. You should definitely unlock and leverage the challenge log. It's sped up my alt class levelling a good deal. Also the guildhests now grant the 1st time bonus xp for each class that does them rather than just one time.
  4. You must be at least this tall to guard this entrance
  5. and comically craven . For me the most awesome thing about these wielders of hugely destructive magic is how cowardly they can be. In your shoes, JFrombaugh, I would probably lean toward either the THM or the ACN for your main casting class. I am biased though. My love for the THM/BLM knows no bounds and I found the CNJ/WHM questlines really unpleasant.
  6. This. You'll get a good feeling for the storylines of each guild this way. If I may make a purely gameplay/mechanical suggestion, take at least 26 levels of thaumaturge. Swiftcast is a must have if you decide to go a healing route.
  7. That was what I meant, not shyness. And I wouldn't say she is opposed to visiting the city states to learn her craft, it's just that she tries to steer clear of the people outside of her guild and the Scions socially, as she's discovered more than a few reasons to believe they aren't as good as they seem, and they don't immediately appreciate her Adventuring life or the good she does for them. But anyway, some other questions about each: 1. From what I understand, Conjury comes from the elementals agreeing to do the caster's bidding. So if you don't follow the Padjal traditions or you act in a way that goes against their beliefs, will Conjury fail you? And if so, then how come many NPCs and voidsent can cast Stone and Cure? 2. The advantage of Thaumaturgy seems to be that you don't need to believe in a specific cause, as long as you've learned the Umbral/Astral shifting. But is Black Magic "corrupting" in the same way as say, Fel magic in WoW? 3. Several other people seem to think that the best choice for Miranda would be a Summoner or Scholar, given that the Arcanists are more serious and trustworthy than most other Limsa Lominsans due to the nature of their work, and the Jobs themselves make sense for serving the Scions as they no longer are tied to specific city states. However, wouldn't a Scholar effectively be required to be similar to Admiral Merlwyb, seeing as how their arcane spells were (evidently) designed around protection and directing Marauder units in battle? I may be mistaken, so take this with a shaker of salt. I was under the impression that conjury was a discipline of magic that channelled the elements, but it didn't necessarily require any particular ethos to use. That's why you see plenty of people that probably aren't very elemental friendly using it. White magic (conjury++) is what the Padjal practice and only shows up with them and the hero of the storyline. The corruption that comes from Thaumaturgy isn't the magic itself. You find corrupted thaumaturges because the art is about destructive force and the sort of people that generally are attracted to destructive force may be more prone to corruption. Or so the story goes.
  8. I'm not entirely up on all the lore, but given that the arcanists seem to act almost as customs officials, the carbuncles should be seen pretty regularly. Plus they are adorable and that goes a long way. I agree with FreelanceWizard, if you can make a backstory that sounds reasonable, go for it! As for the WoW comparison, it's a pretty natural comparison to make . The arcanist is, mechanically, an affliction warlock. It's just missing the Dr.Evil/MUHAHAHAHAHA baggage that goes along with it. Which I'm really really grateful for.
  9. I'm not entirely with you on your last point. While they probably wouldn't inspire the same level of revulsion in most people that say a voidlord would, there are plenty of people that would probably take issue with a small sized titan roaming around. Sure, the smaller size helps, but have you seen Ifrit-Egi? That thing is menacing.
  10. Hi there! I'll use the template. Life is better with templates. --MMORPG background - Just WoW. I was on a non-rp server through cataclysm and an RP server through Mists (Wyrmrest-Accord) --Server - Siren (NA). --RP experience - Light RP on WRA and tabletop gaming. --Character ideas/info - I did Alts in WoW because I had to and the personalities for those characters came along after. Here, I'm focused on one character because well, I can. Teryaani grew up in the poorest areas of Ul'dah. Her youth was full of what one might charitably call "misadventures". One of these earned her a thieves brand on her wrist. One side effect of her less-than-legal activities was being indentured to the thaumaturges of the Black Ossuary to help pay off fines for her misbehavior. It was here that she discovered a talent for the thaumaturges art. A talent that she turned to profit when her term of service was complete. She left Ul'dah at the earliest opportunity and has made it her goal to see every inch of Eorzea. She tends toward mercenary work to pay the bills, but she isn't above other odd jobs if work is slow. IC Stuff: Birthplace: Ul'dah Social standing: Low (parents are unskilled labor) --How did you learn about the coalition? I hunted you guys down. I had the pack of dogs and everything. I was looking for a site dedicated to FFXIV RP and google did not fail me. --What kind of a role-player are you aiming to be? Light, medium, or heavy? For me, it's light. I don't keep IC outside of events, and I prefer light hearted, less serious, events.
  11. For Teryaani, I fall in with the "combatant who knows how to use the axe" camp of warriors. I've never seen her as a raging berserker type IC. SE made most of the jobs extremely uncommon, so I keep that in mind when thinking of her backstory.
  12. I'm seeing the same thing. When you look at the character attributes and gear, it lists a max level which, unless you have the class to 50, is definitely a lower level than your level in that class (5 levels it seems - that's what I'm seeing on my retainers as well). Not sure if that's a bug or if I missed something in the ventures instructions.
