Defiance Season 1 is being sold, if you're interested in picking that up and "catching up". Hyltwakka is sitting down at the dock in Greatloam Growery right now, really liking this area for some RP, and I think I'd be up for the kind of stuff you mentioned. He could help with getting herbs, or even doing some minor conjurer-type-things. I've been thinking for a while now that we should just get a Gridania RP Linkshell together, make sure that people who want to RP in / around here know each other and can contact each other easily.

I'm RPing Hyltwakka as a Conjurer/Pugilist/Botanist, and that's more or less extending into their respective Jobs (White Mage and Monk) for a sort of White Monk like in FFTA/A2. I fully expect a great number of people to be RPing more than one class/job, because it opens up even more possibilities like this.

This sounds like a lot of fun, I'd love to bring Hyltwakka. :]

I'm really disappointed that I can't get into Balmung, I actually thought that since I had a character created here from the last beta weekend I'd be allowed in, but I guess that's not how it works... Still, my need to be on Balmung outweighs my need to be playing, right now-... I have so many plans for Hyltwakka that I can't really bring myself to get started on anything else, especially on a different server. :\

How long should I expect to wait to get into Balmung? I don't wanna go anywhere else, even for an alt. Why aren't there queues? Why do they expect that we'll KNOW when a spot for us frees up? x-x

I hadn't heard about this echo stuff before. It sort of reminds me of the Ascended bit in Rift. Personally I didn't want to RP an ascended character (people who had died and been resurrected with additional souls by either the gods or technology). The echo is less god-modey to me, and if it's the only way I can fight primals I'll probably accept it into my RP in small amounts.
