World of Darkness Online

Recommended Posts

So, I've been gone for about two weeks. Sorry about that. v.v; I'm a terrible person buuuut I'm sure my absence wasn't too missed. I do have some art things to finish, sorry 'bout that.

Anyhew, this is a player of Roleplayers (and very good ones from what I've seen). Since there's no fear as of now that FFXIV: ARR will be coming out in due course, I was wondering if anyone else was interested in the World of Darkness Online game that's coming out.

For those that don't know, World of Darkness was/is a tabletop game (various table top games, actually) from a company called White Wolf that involves vampires, werewolves, changelings, mages, all kinds of great things. I like it because it gets really specific about scenarios I've always wondered about like: 'What happens if a vampire bites a werewolf?'. Abominations. Abominations are what happens.

So the people who made EVE are working on a World of Darkness Online game. There's some information here http://www.wodnews.net/ if anyone is interested-- but for now, I was going to suggest that if anyone is, I recently joined a guild called Acheron which is a WoDO chapter for a rather strong community known as Legend-Gaming. If anyone intends to play WoDO, you might look into it, here http://www.legend-gaming.net/acheron/ . For now they're set on being a RP PVP guild post launch (doesn't mean PVP is mandatory at all or even encouraged in regards to RP) so if any RP or PVPer is looking for information or a group of tight-knit, cool people to join up with, the option is there.

Mostly, I'd like to see more people's feelings about the idea of 'real' vampire MMO set in a modern, realistic setting. So if you have any opinions about it, I'd like to hear them~.

I can't say I'm terribly interested in that sort of setting myself, but I know there are a lot of others that may be, however.. I'm pretty set on FFXIV and am very much a one-MMO at a time type person.

I did want to say though, that I noticed you were gone and did miss seeing you around here!

I missed you! I kept wondering why you weren't participating in the first RPC poll and championing the lady Roegs. :(

Also, I am soooo very much looking forward to WoDO. I just know it's a very long way off yet, so I'm trying to avoid giving it much of my time.

While I'm not interested in WoDO (I didn't know it existed 'till now), I've played the pen 'n' paper version.

I largely have mixed feelings about the setting.

Vampires are incredibly boring.

Playing werewolves was pretty fun, but they suffer from Barbarian syndrome. Or "When you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail." That is, I can't stop wanting to assault things with the werewolves absurd strength.

But I'll admit that I loved the Mages. I'd be very interested in that, if the rest of the stuff wasn't present

This is actually something I know!

Atleast in the pen and paper version, I can tell you...

Dead things.

Dead things happen.

Werewolves (and other supernatural characters) are immune the the effects of the 'embrace', and the non-vamp simply dies from the attempt to convert them to vampire-dom. Assuming that was what you meant by 'bite' of course.

Nothing stops a character from sucking blood from these creatures though, and there are usually amusing side effects from doing so.

Actually, it depends. In Old World of Darkness, a werewolf would usually just die, but would sometimes become a hybrid creature called an Abomination. They were initially a ridiculously exploitable powergamer's wet dream, but were thankfully fixed to be pretty much terrible and unplayable.

Any other full supernatural in Old WoD and all full supernaturals in New WoD either can't become vampires or totally lose their old powers entirely on becoming one. Any part-supernatural/supernaturally influenced humans in either WoD generally follow the latter rule.

Oh, and I liked Changeling best, 'cause I'm a mythology buff. Either The Dreaming or The Lost. :)

I won't really be interested in the World of Darkness MMO until they support the Hunter side of things. Once I can be an Imbued then I'll play it. Not interested in vampires and werewolves and the like. Only interested in putting them to the sword for humanity.

Take back the night, Inherit the earth.

I have actually been following this for a while, being a Cammie (MES now I thinks) they all but made us. ;p

It does have some very interesting concepts and systems put into it. Permanent (or is it more accurately Final ;p) death is one of them. I am also curious as to how the politics will be implemented. I am very much a fan of the material, though I have my doubts as to how well an MMO will really capture the feel of it all. At least the lore bits will be rich, well detailed, and widely available. Still, I watch it with interest and curiosity. In particular I wait for details on the implementation of the Sabbat and a certain Clan that calls the sect home.

Thank you, Aysun and Rhostel. I guess next time I should say something before blipping off the map.

A lot of the things people have brought up here have been topics of discussion for the group I'm intending to play with.

I was originally too worried the game may never even launch-- I've seen how much effort can go into one only to have it implode at EA. They weren't going to be great games, but it was still a pretty big disappointment, especially for the people who worked on them. With no set release date and no RP for me to do otherwise, as I've pretty much concluded the background RP for Siobhain and the Divine Aegis, I've been looking forward to the roleplay with Acheron, and even if the game doesn't launch as soon as anyone hopes, that should keep me entertained.

The next thing is the werewolves. I like them a lot too, in fact, I think I only like Gangrels because they can shapeshift at the latter levels of the Protean ability. Something about shapeshifting makes me happy-- but in response to Shippuu, I was under the impression that werewolves were sort of unofficial protectors of humans? Not really going out and protecting them super hero style but just advocating them and hating the vampires for several reasons, amongst which, human-hurting is prevalent. Being gross and undead, probably another. Either way, the subtle social stuff isn't for everyone I guess. Not even people who -want- to play kindred.

We've been discussing permadeath and our feelings on it. If any of you have read my directory thing (it's pretty boring and I don't suggest it) then you might know that I more or less support permadeath in roleplay, with reasoning. I don't like trolls to be able to kill me for the sake of doing it under the 'guise' of roleplay. Also, I know permadeath as an in game mechanic has aaaaaaaall kinds of terribly things appended to it, which scares me a little, but I suppose I'll roll with it without too much complaining unless it's unrestricted and I literally get killed every time I log on with a new character.

In a game that's meant to include social stories and thus, assumably roleplay, I don't see permadeath being a very popular option. Tabletop or MMO, roleplayers don't like the idea of dying and I imagine a lot of the people who will want to play WoDO will be one of those two types of people, hardcore EVE players, or, if there's some similar economy system, people who want to make money.

Hopefully not the last.

With a lack of real PVE from what I've heard, and so many people with doubts about how PVP will work, I can only hope there'll be a large body of roleplayers.

I'm also reasoning that they can't call it World of Darkness and only include vampires. If they don't put more races/factions/clans in before the game launch than your vanilla Camarilla, then they'll very likely add them in later, possibly as expansions like in WoW, or just in patches.

My understanding is that it will start with Vampires. We know the Camarilla clans are in, possibly the Indepenents and the Sabbat. If not at launch that content is supposed to follow shortly in patches. Werewolves are going to be in at some point and we here rumors of the Mages showing up. That stated, they have said that they are going to get the Vampire content done right first. The assumption is that the other supernaturals will be released in roughly the same order as the table top releases. Vamp>Wolf>Mage.

There is perma-death, but it is under a specific set of circumstances. If you character is "bloodhunted" (however that happens) and gets killed, that is all she wrote for that character, forever. The actual mechanic of getting bloodhunted is unknown at this time, but it seems to involve what is said to be the VERY political and social endgame content. There seem to be a lot of unique and very different concepts going into the MMO. I am curious to see how it all works out in the end, but I am not sure it is going to be your average MMO gamer's cup of tea. It should be very interesting to say the least, just hoping they get the execution down. My hesitation is that the main themes of the World Of Darkness (personal horror, morality, etc.) just don't translate well to the MMO experience, but then crazier things have happened. That said, RPers will always take such things and run with them, and they seem to be interested in turning the game into a bit of an RPer paradise.

Seems to be the general feeling, that it will be good, though no one is certain what the aspects will be. Apparently there is only one server? I'm still trying to wrap my head around that, I just imagine it collapsing under the weight of everyone who would be spread throughout numerous servers on one. Even Maplestory had different servers.

For right now, in Acheron, we've been roleplaying vampire characters. We've got a guest thread for roleplay (but honestly, I'm suffering a lack of diversity) just because the population is so small. It seems that people think they're selling their soul for a game and just because they don't know the release date--? Well, I think I understand the mentality. Not wanting to set anything in concrete until you know you even want to play.

I, for one, am not that considerate. I just like roleplaying when it doesn't end inexplicably.

Like some of the RP threads here do! Omg! x_o I think a lot of us just hang out in the Skype Soliloquy tavern for our XIV RP fix instead of doing it on the forums anymore.

/end derail. :)

Well there's a thing I didn't know existed up until now. Not that I should really be RPing Rhio at this point anyway.

On the point of WoD Online, I will get interested when I can play one of the following:

- A Kitsune (yes, I know, they're mostly Nuwisha but with foxes, I don't care)

- A mummy (yes, I'm fond of pretty much anything with a vaguely middle eastern flavor, even if Egypt is a bit far)

- A demon (yes, I really enjoyed this eleventh-hour addition)

- A Ravnos (yeah, let's see that get past White Wolf right now)

- Pretty much anything from Doomslayers (because Doomslayers)

Until then, I'm hedging my bets.

It's non-canon (unless the people playing agree it to be canon). x3 DAMNIT STOP MAKIN' ME DERAIL.

It'll be like EVE, except instead of a huge number of star systems each running on separate servers that use the interstellar travel network to mask loading, it'll be a number of cities on separate servers with train/plane/highway travel masking the loading. Each city may further be chopped up into various districts with travel between them masking loading as well. So it will be one server in the meta sense, but using many server computers in a network to make it so.

I just have plenty of other things available right now or in the near future to occupy myself with. Focusing on something that's definitely still years off will just make me impatient and frustrated. Knowing the exact release date won't make it any more worth my time, because I already know it's more than just a few months away.
