Long-time RPer new to MMO/FF14 RP - hello!

Hello! I'm Jaden, and RP is something I deeply enjoy, plus, I care very much about my characters and I've found it's one of the best ways for me to get a real feel for them, so I'd like to inject this into my experience with FF14 as well! It's nice to meet you.

 

MMORPG background: I basically grew up with WoW, but drifted away from it at a point... Then ended up picking up multiple other MMOs within the last two years, including this one! Which is to say, unfortunately, I have a lot of it. However, I'm very much new to the FF14 world, and the FF world in general, as I've just picked it up recently.

RP experience: In general, lots! I've been doing it almost the entire time I've been online, and am actively a member of four D&D campaigns, two of which I am the DM of. I also have a bit of experience RPing in Discord communities. However, again, I am very new to FF14, as well as MMO RP as a whole, so I'm kind of clueless in that regard, being only used to written-only formats.

How did you learn about the coalition?: Was looking for lore information, and someone linked to this forum as a source for something. It seems like a good place to be for information and community, so here I am!

What kind of a role-player are you aiming to be? (e.g. Light, medium, or heavy): To be honest, I'm not quite sure what qualifies these categories, aha... Perhaps medium? I very much enjoy the game itself outside of RP, and both interacting IC and OOC are fun, so maybe a mix of both.

Anything from real life you're comfortable with sharing? (Work, school, hobbies, etc.): Well... I guess all that's particularly interesting is that I'm an artist! Albeit a very tired one. You can see a little of that in I'ri's info link.

How acceptable, generally, is lore-bending? To what degree? I like using established lore as more of a detailed guideline than a strict rulebook, a la D&D customs, but I'm definitely willing to be more in line with 'canon' to the best of my ability if that's generally unacceptable.

 

I've seen people say White Magic is regarded a specific way in lore, and that should be respected within RP environmentsーmaybe I'm dense or something, but I have yet to pick up on what this regard is. I know from seeing others talk about it that Black Magic is heavily looked down upon, although not entirely illegal, but I'm not sure what the attitude towards WHM is. Is it particularly difficult to master, and few can use it?

 

What site is generally accepted as a host for information? I've seen many use carrd.co, which is fine by me, but I'm curious if other sites such as the partner wiki for this forum or toyhou.se are also acceptable, and what's easiest for others to use/look at.

 

And finally, what's a good way to... get around, (get into?) for lack of a better phrase, in the RP community for FF14? Joining FCs is daunting for me personally, as for one, I have bad anxiety, and for another, 'guilds' in MMOs have always felt a bit more... personal? to me, so joining one full of people I don't know is a bit scary. What do people typically do to get a start into the scene or meet partners?

Welcome to the website, I'm certain your RP experience will be appreciated!  

 

I can't comment on how the general community of FFXIV views lore bending. Some people on this site have stated their flexibility on the matter, but if you're walk-up RPing I'd say play it safe and go by the book. 

 

As a general rule it's good to treat jobs/classes/professions as we would irl careers of similar distinction. So the White Mage job would be akin to the practice of medicine with varying degrees of proficiency, and becoming a fully fledged doctor takes years of study. The cool thing about the Final Fantasy setting is that one could RP as a Conjurer first while learning about the lore of the job (job quests do a good job of facilitating this). Also the character's journey to becoming a White Mage could be part of their unfolding story. Struggle, adversity and limitations can really help shape a character and make overcoming challenges that much more special. Learning from more experienced characters or bonding with fellow students can also open up a wide range of RP possibilities.

 

I'm not aware of any one site being the go-to for posting character profiles and the like, some even post such details on this website. Whichever platform best serves what you have in mind, go for it!  

 

Some people will post information about their characters and express an interest in forming friendships with other characters. Such posts can even be found in other Welcome Desk threads. RP events can also be helpful, especially if the event involves an interest, skill or even curiosity of your character.

Rightーof course showing immediate prowess/talent for jobs like WoL does would be rare, so it must be since WHM requires a lot of careful training and such, not to mention natural inclination for it... so I'd assume it's the difficulty of it that makes it something specially mentioned in rules as it is. The possibilities from a character being a student didn't occur to me, that sounds fun to explore!

 

I'll have to keep an eye out for events then, it does seem like a perfect opportunity. Thank you for the information!

RPing a student, inquisitive person or visiting foreigner are among my go-to characters when I'm new to an MMO and still learning the lore. It provides a fun way for players to share lore information as well as stories about their character's adventures. Even when one knows the lore inside and out it could be nice to RP a very accomplished student who's willing to share what they know to help fellow students, or an ego-maniac who can't wait to show off what they know.
