Server-wide continuing story?

Some of the most fun and memorable instances of roleplay I've experienced in my many years of gaming happened when a large part of the community worked together to create one global story for everyone to enjoy. It would usually start with several smaller incidents and grow into one large story arc over several months, like a collaborative server-based main story line.

 

I know I haven't been back in game for very long, but I've yet to catch any whiff of something around these lines on either Balmung or Mateus. Am I just not looking hard enough? Do I need to get with the times because stuff like that is sooo 10 years ago?  Do people prefer to keep things within their FC or stick to social gatherings? Would you (yes, you!) be interested in taking part in and/or helping make something like this happen?
