Asyria Posted August 1, 2010 Share #26 Posted August 1, 2010 Honestly, I hope FF XIV -doesn't- become another mainstream thing. I'd hate to live going into a game because I always loved the titles and wanted to RP (I did play WoW because I've played Warcraft 1, 2 and 3 and was looking forward to RP in that universe!) and end up in a mainstream thing again, seeing my RP environment devolve into pure economical BS. At least SE seems to have this whole Immersion thing down pretty nicely. Link to comment

It did provide a very immersive world to say the least where a lot was interactive in terms of Lore (even though they contradicted themselves a lot). So I can't say that I didn't like it. But I understand your position. Link to comment
Hiname Posted August 1, 2010 Share #28 Posted August 1, 2010 Weeeeelll... I played WoW for many, many years. With some ups and downs, made it through classic and two expansions. I think its time to give a little rant here. The time I startet, in November 05, WoW was my very first mmo and somethign wfully new. i had the luck to jump on a server that had opened its gates only a few weeks ago, so everything was just cool around there. Playing my little mage, I explored, stared in awe and met many new friends, getting in touch with online-RP and begann loving it, spending hours in the mage-quarter of stormwind, selling my handmade Linencloth-Bags. WoW was new that time.. and everything was ponys and rainbows. My little mage grew up, reached 60, started raiding. Oh the raiding back then.. stumbling with 39 others through a fuggin' huge cavern full of trash, more trash, MOAR trash and if you're lucky you see a boss every now and then. Not to mention the loot was terrible and getting a full class-set was something you see in your depraved, wet dreams in which you bend Lady Luck over a table. Then the rgeat day, Burnign Crusade was released. Every set you gathered and every piece of loot you optained becomming worthess from one day to the enxt, replaced by something that drops by a big, red boar in the wilds. Oh well, we move on. "Some" label BC as a golden age for WoW, such as some claim thats classic. As for me, I agree with the former. I had most of my fun after hitting 70. Still having a lot of fun, though the introduction of Blood Elves opened a... well... bad influance to the hrode in therms of RP. You better stay away from Silvermoon. Oh the horrors I had to endure walking these streets... Well, eventually I managed to outlive the countless cheep and horrible plaid bloodelfs and wannabe whores and 5637553 bloodknight-champions... Raiding during BC was fun, too. No more 40 man lagfests where half the raid was afk or watching porn, anyway. I enjoyed 10 man raiding and gathering up with our partner-guild for the bigger raids. Gathering a set was actually doable and sometimes quite easy. I still love the token-way to gather sets.. Oh and lets not forget the day we all were waiting for. FINALLY! After defeating Illidan for no appearant reason, the march to Northrend begann! Time to kick some Lichking ass for real now! Okay then, back in northrend, lets go kill Ar- oh hey, look! An insane dragon! Lets kill it! .. okay, thats taken care off, now lets kill Arth- uuhhhh, an old god! Lets kill it after we elarned we better not kill them! Hurray! Now lets get back to killing.. uhh, Tirion is having a carnival! Hurray! .. Good, lets kill Arthas now. For real! Woooo! And during the whole expansion, things got worse.. and worse... and worse. It was during that time when i noticed.. WoW is worn out. Dull, outdated and ridden by comerce and Activion. *shiver* No graphic update thats worth mentioning, an hopelessly outdated engine and the same things over and over again. Mechanics fucked up and the same things all over. Dailys, grind, epics, epics, epics.. and more epics. There was just nothing to be gained anymore. The community spoiled to no end, a collection of brats, elitists and jerks as far the eye could see. Lets not mention that you were looked at veeery odd when daring to play RP in puplic. *sigh* The good times have passed, like WoW has long gone over its prime. Link to comment
Asyria Posted August 1, 2010 Share #29 Posted August 1, 2010 Thank you Hiname! Now I never need rant about WoW again because you've just said everything there was to say! Link to comment
Kashemia Posted August 2, 2010 Share #30 Posted August 2, 2010 Or maybe it's just that we've played it for too long? While I completely agree that WoW is a bit worn out, it sounds like they're doing some really interesting things in Cataclysm. I'm going to check it out, sure, but I'm not super excited about it right now, and it might not be at launch. But I agree with your point, WoW might have worn itself out a bit. I hope for them the changes in Cataclysm will add some new life. On the note of FFXIV becoming mainstream... While the FF series already has a big fanbase, I doubt it will become the same "type" of popularity as WoW has, and as Asyria, I sort of hope not. While a larger fanbase can be great in some ways, it has its dangers as well. While I've had some great roleplay on WoW, and been in some awesome guilds, a lot of people are idiots. I'm sorry, but they are. Of course idiots are in all game, and the reason why there's so many in WoW is because it's larger, but still. I prefer being able to ask a simple question without being called "Noob", everybody was a new player once. It might not happen to me in WoW anymore, I've been playing that game for, what, 5 years as well, but I see it happen to other people, and it makes me sad. I love when a community comes TOGETHER and help eachother, instead of just thinking about themselves or their own guild. Link to comment
Kima wolf Posted August 2, 2010 Share #31 Posted August 2, 2010 Well, looks like I'm the only person in the world who never played WoW (I know, its okay to be shocked lol). When WoW came out, it launched around the same time as another game which was supposed to destroy gaming, the game I bet on instead of WoW. Everquest 2. Can't say I regret never playing WoW because I had some of the greatest Roleplay I've ever had on Antonia Bayle RP server even if the game wasn't the size of WoW. I also began Final Fantasy XI, but never was able to find the Roleplay there as much as i'd like. I would hope that Final Fantasy XIV has a nice large, stable Roleplaying community ala Everquest 2 or City or Heroes even if it won't have a server tagged RP. And those emotes will go a long ways to helping the world feel more "lifelike". And I hope no game strives to be a WoW-killer, because striving for it will definitely doom your game to failure, FFXIV will certainly be bigger than FFXI which was huge for a MMO on its own. I just have this sneaking feeling this one will be bigger, but won't approach WoW levels of success but I don't think it needs to either. Link to comment
Eva Posted August 2, 2010 Share #32 Posted August 2, 2010 I never played WoW either, so you're not alone. I actually really enjoyed the Warcraft series pre-MMO. But I was heavily absorbed into FFXI by that point, and knew right off that WoW wouldn't be able to hold a candle to it. So I guess I can't really comment on this stuff. Just wanted to say that you're not alone Kima. lol Link to comment

Axl Posted August 2, 2010 Author Share #34 Posted August 2, 2010 I think WoW really over expanded the warcraft lore to a stupid level. Link to comment
Asyria Posted August 2, 2010 Share #35 Posted August 2, 2010 Not only did they expand to a stupid level but they retconned a lot of lore that was pretty nice back then. I now hope they never do a Starcraft mmo seeing as that game's lore is still simple, straightforward, and makes sense. Link to comment
Axl Posted August 2, 2010 Author Share #36 Posted August 2, 2010 Yeah, a starcraft MMO would not work so good. Link to comment
Hiname Posted August 2, 2010 Share #37 Posted August 2, 2010 Oh come on, we all want an Warhammer 40k MMO. You know it. ... I would have a hard time deciding between an Eldar Farseer or a Tyranid Carnifex. Muaahahahaha! .. Ohhh, a Space Marine tank! Food in cans! *rips armor plate down* Link to comment
ArmachiA Posted August 2, 2010 Share #38 Posted August 2, 2010 ^ There is a Warhammer 40k MMO in the works already, Link to comment
Asyria Posted August 2, 2010 Share #39 Posted August 2, 2010 Yes they are making a 40k mmo. And the first thing they officially stated was they were going to do it like WoW. I have been trying to find an alternative to WoW for so long now and the first thing they officially announce about the mmo based on one of my favorite worlds ever is.. "we gonna copy them!". *cries* Link to comment

Actually, I was one of the 70% of people who quit after hitting level 10. Link to comment
