XI-XIV Syncing

So I've never played XI, but I'm one of those people that needs to collect everything ever. When Crisis Core came out in Japan I bought the Collector's Edition with PSP. Dissidia? The Special Box set. And so on.

 

As you may know, having an active XI account will get you some little extras in XIV. So I have just bought XI. I grabbed the CD Key and went to register it on my Members.Squeenix account (EU, though I presume registering games is the same on the NA site, just different keys) but... the key is differently set up to what the "Register Game" option allows.

 

Could anyone advise me on how I go about doing this? XI is currently downloading on Steam so the game'll register and all that jazz at the end of the download, but I just wanna make sure I don't screw up and sync it to another account or do something else rather newbie-ish.

 

Sorry if this already came up, I'm ever the inquisitive person as you may discover!

You register to play XI on the playonline client, it does not go through your square enix account until you decide to link it afterwards (and it's only for more security)

Also, there is no overlay sadly, due to the way playonline works, it won't show you playing XI on your steam friendslist.
