Nervous for the party. The crew has grown of late, I am hoping this will give us a chance to spend time with it all. I rolled fifty cigars, I hope Ace remembers the flowers, I know the ingredients Ry requested were delivered this morning. Menphina, please let this go well. And let me find time to talk to Ry, he seemed to want to speak more last night but I was exhausted.

The party went better than I expected. It was nice to see everyone smiling…well, for the most part. There were a few hitches, I should have told Ace how strong the cigars were. And Ami made it clear she would no longer acknowledge me….funny she would when Ry brought me when he first tried to help her. Seems she keeps forgetting Daevien was the one that left and had only later ‘claimed’ he cared for me. Tough to believe anything out of someone’s mouth who is being partially possessed…controlled.

Ry made this amazing meal, I think everyone loved it it too. It seemed like we had plenty to drink as well. We even got to see some of the newer faces, got a bunch of details too about that love triangle….it does remind me of ….well, it doesn’t matter anyways. Ace and Rose seemed relaxed from their trip. I need to pull her aside and ask how it went.

It is truly amazing how time heals. I have awoken, refreshed….I feel whole. It’s an odd feeling. I look back, have I grown? Was I truly so naive when I first met this crew? I hope I have grown, I hope they see it as well. I care about them, perhaps more than what others would consider ‘normal’, but it won’t stop me. They mean too much.

Ry has been sleeping soundly, I know he worked hard for the party. He didn’t have to and he did. How different things are for us as well….We sorta fell into each other. It makes me think that he was right…perhaps being enamored with ‘daywalkers’ was not what was right for me. He understands the expectations placed upon me as a Keeper…he knows all too well. And he also knows why I have walked away from so much. I still look back to that day on the ship when I was trying to heal him and I remember his expression, his confusion and comment, my healing being intimate. I worry that Mota will try to claim him. But…I claimed him. It was probably the most traditional thing I had ever done in my whole life. But Mota would destroy him. And….unlike Daevien and S’anhu who didn’t want to be with me

Ry broke down his emotional walls…for me. For me. So if Mota comes again…I will fight with everything I have to keep him safe…and away from her. I promised him that. And I won’t fail.

The past few days…where to begin? A group of us met up in Ul’dah as Lina’s hand was injured. Ry had told me about what happened when they rescued Lina, it seems she hurt it then. I had tried to help but when I was casting my spell she was in pain. I have never had my spells cause pain on someone, I pride myself on being incredibly gentle with others. That Lalafell…he angers me and he angered Rose with the statements about Ace. But we set that aside to quickly get Lina to the Padjals. He was able to help her and Lina was healed. But…things blew up between Ry and Ace. I spent some time talking to Ry about it, though I can tell it still is weighing on him.

The following night Ry and I dragged Joundi out to the tavern night. I remembered my bathing suit but we didn’t end up in the springs. It was for the best though. Learned a lot more about Joundi. Tortured soul in so many ways. I suppose after he shared about killing his family…..him distancing from us seemed to be his way of trying to protect us all. I hope he thought about some of the things I said. He has stopped drinking too, not sure if it is because he slipped up and spilled his secret that night with Rose around…or..

This evening we went to this ball. There was food and games. Ry, Joundi and I were speaking when Ami and her tribe entered the same building. Ami looked at me and I just continued with what I was doing. Part of me was mad when he sighed. Hadn’t I already said my piece to him….didn’t he understand? Then he needed to take a call. Joundi went out to look around and I went and got some food. Kel found me, we had a chance to laugh and drink. He seemed to be ok….until Dash showed up. By this point Joundi and I were speaking in the bar about forgiveness. On a side note, is it a requirement for all the males to be so damn stubborn? Ry wasn’t where I had last seen him, Ami was gone too. I tried not to think about whatever was going on. Dash and Kel had this blow up, I could tell Kel was irritated with me, he seems to think I think everything is simple…and it’s not. Dear Menphina, don’t I know that? Kel split and Joundi and I had a moment to talk more. I hated it, but Joundi had a point. I worry so much about others I don’t do well giving myself time or put myself first. We might have continued that conversation but I heard Ry over the pearl. He had tried again to help Ami. He was wounded and I was able to heal that, not without tension between Ry and Cao.

And lastly, earlier today I went to see Lan-I-Mata. She was grueling. She said I was draining myself emotionally again and I needed to focus and ground myself again. Gave me more tea. I think a relaxing night at Fallgourd might be just what I need.

I spent the morning harvesting some herbs deep within the Shroud. I want to see if I can help Ace with his nightmares. Lan-I-Mata had given me the recipe and once I had the herbs, I returned to show her. She demonstrated how to cure and process them so they could make a tincture or a tea. I have a small satchel for tea and a some vial of tincture. She did warn me though, that it could be an emotional experience. Dreamwalking, she called it, not something one should just do on a whim, but only if one seeks the truth behind what they experience at night.

I was glad to see Ace so I could tell him. I know he has a lot to do, I think when we get the chance I will ask Rose to stay with us. I think Ace would feel more at ease and I don’t want the experience to be distressing.

I checked in on the old man. Relan was in good spirits and he jokingly asked if I had grown taller since he last saw me. Clearly he wants to see me a little more often and I promised him I would. Relan asked if I had seen Mota. I hadn’t heard a word from anyone seeing her…..other than Joundi mentioning he knew her. Are they…friends?

Ry and I exchanged gifts for the holidays. He gave me this beautiful pendant, I love it. It was thoughtful too, a way to hear his voice even when he is gone training. I know he has been training over at the pugilist guild, training hard. I gave him the necklace I made. I didn’t mention what the small wooden pendant was made from. It’s not that I think he is reckless, but I figured he would need added protection and especially protection of the mind. I know the Mender would believe this was a good use for a bit of the Willow heart wood.

I have also started working on a staff for myself. For some time I have….well, I didn’t want to put myself out there as healer. I don’t wear the robes gifted to me often. Lan-I-Mata spoke of that, stating she suspected I was fearful of letting others down, so if they don’t know of my gifts, I can’t disappoint. Ugh - I didn’t want to tell her she was right, but maybe there is truth to that, you know? That odd Padjal simply laughed and gave me a list of items to gather for her. I asked what it was for and she said it would be for a new robe. Not that I should get rid of my other robe, but the new one would be catered more to my ‘specialties’ with healing. Some of the items might be difficult to get and she told me to take my time, the robes would be created when it was the appropriate time. Whatever that means.

My next harvest for the cigars is coming up. Thank the Twelve! Relan has a new place for me to store my merchandise, he even suggested I infuse some liquor with the herbs and see if that sells. He is a smart one, that old man. I think perhaps I will try to make a bottle or two and bring it to the crew to try.

And Rose! Shared such good news, we didn’t get a chance to finish speaking so I don’t even dare write down what she shared. But oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh! This was underlined SEVEN times!

I went up to see everyone, find out how the job went and all. Some had already left, sadly I was too late to speak with them. Joundi and Neviana were still there, Ry joining us shortly after. Chatting with them a bit, I noticed Joundi seemed to using his arm oddly, trying to tug his sleeve down. I asked to see it and he showed a branding he received from…well, you know.

Ry and I started speaking with Joundi, trying to see if there was a way around this…sorcery those twelve mages did to him. Joundi kept insisting he performed too many atrocities to the forest and the residents. It got me thinking. The Padjals prize the Willow tree wood….and, if I were to fulfill my duty as a Mender, perhaps the forest would allow forgiveness to Joundi. Even if it is only enough for the Padjals to speak with him and see if they can help, it would be worth it.

Of course, I didn’t say any of this to anyone. Gods, even Ry does not know his gifted pendant is made from that very wood. I rushed back to Relan’s and spoke with him about the idea. He could tell I was excited, trying to tell me to calm down. He asked if I was ready to take on the duty’s of a Mender. I guess…I am not sure. But I also can not see Joundi continuing like this.

Lan-I-Mata would know. She is eccentric as far as Padjals go, she knows of the Menders. I might not have a tribe but that does not mean I can not fulfill the duties of one…

I will go to see her tomorrow evening. We have a lot to discuss and I need answers.

My head is swimming. It is, I don’t really know what to think. I need to find Rose. She might have suggestions for me.

After I ran off to see Relan, I returned to Ry’s place. It was nice that he was home that evening, he has been training so hard. A quiet night was exactly what I needed. And…then he said it. Yup, that he loves me. I go from having never heard it in my life, to hearing it from two different men once I join this crew. I….I was nervous at first. I remember when S’anhu had said it, I know he was under duress at the time, so that makes it different…or something.

Ry said it and I felt like he meant. He means it right? I even…I don’t even know if I asked him if he meant it, or just said that he must have meant it perhaps? I was so overwhelmed. I told him the same, because I do love him. He has been there for me, even if he hasn’t always seen eye to eye with others of the crew. Was it too soon? I fell asleep easily that night.

A return to Relan in the morning and I blurted it all out to him. The old man simply smiled at me and hugged me. I could tell by his face he thinks it cute…but he must not believe it’s real. I asked him outright and he smoked his pipe a moment, finally stating that we all having to go through different experiences to learn and grow; that my heart was big and I had the ability to care for everyone. So the old man thinks I am foolish….or I have much to learn…or something.

I packed my stuff for Lan-I-Mata’s. I just wanted to check on Joundi’s arm before I met her over at Fallgourd. I was directed toward where he was staying and walked in….he was swinging his axe around and I think I startled him. No one was hurt, but I could tell he was uncomfortable. Probably…well….he wasn’t wearing a shirt. He re-emerged once he was fully dressed and we talked about his arm…but the topic got off course. And then he was saying he knew I was with Ry but he just wanted to let me know he cared for me.

Rose….Rose! I need to talk to you right now!~

Poe had been sitting in her hammock, lounging in the window of Relan’s storefront for half the sun’s time in the sky. Not because she was nervous, Poe refused to believe that was a factor. Flopping to her side, the hammock swaying light, her gaze settled on the wooden box sitting on Relan’s table. The Mender’s box.

Her finger’s grasped the small locket Ry had gifted to her and she nodded. Getting herself up and out of the hammock, she walked to the table, eyes focused. Poe scooped the box up, tucking it safely into her satchel. Writing out a short note, it read:

Ry –

Joundi was approached by the very same mage looking for Lina. I fear we must hasten our efforts to see if the Padjals will help. I have left a message for Lan-I-Mata and I am heading to Gridania now to speak with the Elder Seedseer Kan-E-Senna. I will return with word if the Padjals will lend aid.

-Poe

Exiting Relan’s shop as she yanked her jacket on, Poe located a Moogle and gave them the instructions to deliver the note to Ry. Anxiously, she rubbed her hands together and she found a local mage who could get her to Gridania quickly.

______________________________________________________________________

Arriving in Gridania, Poe hurried along, one hand clutched to her satchel. She kept her gaze low, passing through the crowded streets until she arrived. Nervously swallowing, she entered the building. Two Twin Adders nodded to her, the small waiting room still spacious and well lit. The Elezen Adder opened the engraved door into the adjoining room, motioning to Poe. Her eyes wide, Poe stood, “For me?”

The other Adder, a Midlander nodded, “She is waiting to see you.”

Poe swallowed nervously, “Of course.” Smoothing the front of her jacket once more, nervously touching her satchel, she strode through the door.

The first thing Poe noted was the plants. Large ferns, beautiful flowers, the room was filled with foliage. Elder Seedseer was looking out a window that had a view of the waterfall in the center of town. She turned, offering a warm smile, “Poe Lhyzeal.”

Poe immediately felt her knees begin to shake and she offered a bow, “Elder Seedseer, thank you for seeing me.”

Kan-E-Senna motioned for Poe to sit, the Padjal herself sitting in an oversized chair made of silk, “I don’t get requests to speak with those who have trained as high as you every day. I am interested.”

Poe nodded as she sat in an ornate wooden chair, swallowing as she placed her satchel in her lap. “I came to ask for help.”

Kan-E-Senna smiled, “What kind of help are you looking for?”

Poe took a long breath, words suddenly bursting from her lips. “It’s my friends. They are like my family, well, they are the crew, but really friends and I love them like family. But that isn’t why I am here. I mean-“

Kan-E-Senna raised a brow and lifted her hand, motioning Poe to stop, “Perhaps I shall order us some tea. You can take a moment.” Poe’s face immediately turned a hot red and she nodded, gaze falling to her lap. Kan-E-Senna walked out of the room, closing the room behind her.

Poe sighed, flopping further down in the chair, her hands resting on her satchel. Pulling the box out, she looked down at it in her hands. It contained everything.

The door opened, Kan-E-Senna and the two Adders came back inside. The door was firmly shut behind them. Poe glanced between the three, her eyes a bit wary. Looking back to Elder Seedseer, Poe’s voice was barely above a whisper, “What is going on?”

The two Adder’s shifted their weight, expressions neutral. Kan-E-Senna sat back down in her overstuffed chair, “I wanted to make sure I did indeed sense what you have brought with you. I needed a moment to clear myself.”

Poe glanced down to the box and back up at Kan-E-Senna, stunned, “You could sense the…Sacred Willow?”

The Padjal sat a moment, staring back intently at Poe before answering. “Of course I can.” Kan-E-Senna adjusted the sleeve of her robes, her gaze still on Poe, finally speaking again, “There had been no word about a new Mender for several cycles. There have always been three….but the last six cycles, only two.”

Poe nodded, leaning towards the Padjal, her hands shaking, “I brought it…to see if you could help.”

Kan-E-Senna arched a delicate brow, “I sense your heart and intentions pure. What is this help you seek?”

Poe didn’t speak immediately. She didn’t know what to say, what was too much information to share? Explain all of Lina’s story, no, that would take too long. Joundi had requested she not mention him by name. Poe sighed, realizing suddenly the Elder Seedseer was still waiting for a response. Nervously smiling, Poe nodded, “I have a friend whose life has been in danger. There are some who wish harm to her. Those behind it are using the rest of my friends, attempting to coerce them into giving her over. One of these friends who has recently been pressured has been…cursed, magic of some sort. He is incapable of receiving healing from magic.”

At first Kan-E-Senna’s face was one of caring, understanding. But once Poe started to describe Joundi, the Padjal’s eyes seemed to ice over, “So are you coming to ask for protection for your one friend or aid to help heal the other?”

Poe looked flustered, bowing her a head, “I came to ask primarily for the friend who needs aid. With him fully healed, I believe our crew could continue to protect our friend from those that hunt her.”

The Padjal’s eyes fell to the wooden box in Poe’s grasp, “And so you brought a piece of the Sacred Willow….to ask me to look the other way and aid him.” Poe nervously shook her head. She wasn’t sure if the Padjal had realized who she was speaking of, but she sensed the anger starting to brew.

“That wasn’t it at all. I felt ready, I had started to read through the information she left for me. I brought this in good faith, I realize it’s importance to Padjals, to the White Mages. I am asking for a trade, a piece of the wood for your help with my frie-“

“Enough!”

Poe shut her mouth, biting her lip nervously. Kan-E-Senna rose to her feet. Poe could hear the Adders shifting their weight behind her ear. A quick glance over her shoulder confirmed they looked tense. The Padjal moved to stand before Poe, her expression heavy, “Poe Lhyzeal. I hearby recant your membership to the Conjurer’s Guild and will no longer be acknowledged as a White Mage.”

Poe gasped, getting to her feet, “What?!” She felt one of the Adder’s touch her shoulder and she angrily shrugged from their grasp. “What is this about?”

Kan-E-Senna shook her head, “You have already made choices. You choose to help those that have not always served in Gridania’s best interest. White Mages are no strangers to corruption, but I will not allow this to happen. Per our agreement with the Menders, you will be free to roam our city as long as you continue to serve the Shroud. But hear me when I say I will be watching you.”

Poe’s large green eyes started to tear up, her ears flopping, “I…I am only trying to help my friends.” The Padjal continued to stand there, shaking her head. Poe meekly picked up the Mender box and tucked it into her satchel. She glanced to the two Adders, nodding as she moved past them to the door. With a hand on the handle, Poe turned to look at the Elder Seedseer once more.

Kan-E-Senna’s face softened and she approached Poe. “I understand you were forced to make a difficult choice without knowing the implications beforehand.” The Padjal canted her head as if debating speaking the next words, “No road is closed to those true of heart. Go speak with Lan-I-Mata.”

Poe was ushered out the door before she could ask for a clarification. What had just happened? Stripped of her membership, renounced as a white mage…how had this gone so terribly wrong?

Poe’s Journal Entry

*The journal appears to have been the target of anger. The binding partially split, one corner dinged, the leather scuffed. Perhaps thrown about?*

Disgraced…

I had never hoped to be someone of importance. But then again, I also never thought that…helping…my good intentions would lead me to such a dark place. Kan-E-Senna…She knew my heart was pure, she said so….and yet…

A lengthy pause in the writing; the parchment stark white.

Relan had always warned, there would be a day where I had to make difficult choices. And that even the smallest choice could…impact in ways I could never imagine. I have not dared return to see him. Not that Relan cares for titles, for memberships, but…it is proof I failed. I have been trying to rack my brain…did I want to be a white mage? No…but I had a natural gift with healing. I found a trainer who challenged me….I have feared it is all lost now.

Kan-E-Senna told me to go speak to my trainer before she had me escorted out of her building. Will Lan-I-Mata even acknowledge me? Speak to me? I had sent her a note…asked to meet. I will go to Fallgourd in two evenings as planned, hopefully to see her. Please, please be there.

I now have to face the crew. How do I say this to any of them? Only Relan and Joundi knew of my plan to go speak to Elder Seedseer. I will face them both, tonight. I had come across an old map in Relan’s secondary storage space. I want to speak to them tonight.

I don’t want them to think of me as weak…I didn’t mean to mess this up. I fear the Adders will know Joundi is around. I am not sure, but I am hope he will be able to stay safe. Thank the Twelve I did not share more about Lina. In my innocent attempt at helping….I am seem to be leaving a trail of ruin. And what will Ryillin think? The rest of the crew?

I..I am no longer a White Mage. Who am I now?

Lan-I-Mata has given me so much to think about. It started when I went out to Fallgourd to meet her. I…I wasn’t even sure she would show up. But there she was…I rushed over to see her and she looked me over. I could feel my ears starting to droop, I was so fearful this was it, our goodbye. She looked me over and sighed. I immediately asked her why she was sighing and then she responded. You look exactly the same…nothing has changed.

I suppose I got a little irked, I mean, what was that about. But then the odd Padjal explained. She knew beforehand that I was not meant to follow in the path of a White Mage. I couldn’t understand it then, why would she have agreed to be my trainer knowing this? Lan-I-Mata explained that she knew my predecessor, it sounds like quite well. Lan-I-Mata said she had been on the lookout for the next Mender, though she had not expected for me to just show up. To say I was baffled would be putting it lightly. She quickly asked if I had the Mender’s box with me. The two of us poured over the writings inside that the Mender had left me.

Lan-I-Mata came up with a list of things I needed to collect. She explained that it was time to truly set out on the path of a Mender. My empathic abilities will become heightened when traveling in the Shroud, so I need to be mindful. Lan-I-Mata told me I needed to gather flax harvested in the Sylph gardens. She will be able to create robes that will help me keep…some of my abilities in check while in the Shroud. She explained I was expected to look over the Eastern Shroud, so stated I needed to go out and visit, inspect, return to the lands and listen to the elements.

I suppose all of her…odd trainings, ways of speaking were her way to prepare me for what a Mender’s life means. Lan-I-Mata prepared to head off, stating she would return in two nights again. We would have tea and speak with the messengers of the Shroud, learn how I could help them.

Things have been dumped upside down…now I must find my way.

I am adjusting…life as a Mender, I am not sure what I expected. I have spent some time in the Eastern Shroud, trying to communicate with the Touched. It has been a bit of a struggle. They have not been as willing to speak. When Nev and I were enjoying a meal at the Missing Member, we were approached by an Elezen, one who seemed to know a bit about the Sylphs. He seemed nice enough, I could tell Nev enjoyed his flattering ways. Perhaps I am a bit defensive of the forest and it’s residents, his comment irked me a bit.

During dinner, Nev also requested my help with her research; wanting me to stoneskin the part of her mind that helped her control her emotions. I was…of course it was a struggle for me. With my abilities and my empathic sensitivity, to control and dampen one’s emotions is not something I would have recommended. But after speaking with her, she seems to understand and I am learning that everyone must make their own choices.

So I did as she requested. She met me over at the Sanctum of the Twelve and I cast the spell. She wanted to make sure the spell worked, so asked if I would bring Joundi over to test. She seemed calm and she informed it was working. She shared more than she had planned, I believe. I could tell Joundi was starting to pick up bits and pieces. She had asked me specifically to not tell Joundi. I pulled him aside to explain our planned communication. Eos has put my mind at ease, Nev was smart to set this up. While speaking to Joundi, Nev snuck out. It had dawned on me, as Joundi and Nev were speaking….well, regardless. They care for each other, and isn’t that what this crew needs? Looking out for each other’s backs. I am doing everything I can to be there for them all.

I was able to check in with Eos. She is a sweet little thing, but…I can’t believe I am going to say this, she is too trusting. Not that Tellurian has given a reason to not trust him. I just know Nev’s research is important and I don’t know how much she truly wants shared. Though Eos did explain that Nev just didn’t want Joundi to know. Eos…said a lot of things. I knew deep down it to be true, didn’t I? I had picked up on it.

It does answer a lot though, right? Joundi has just confused his feelings, they are meant for Nev and…well, yup, he is confused. I realize that now. I mean, they like each other, and they would fit together perfectly, if they could just see it. Perhaps Tellurian taking her out will make Joundi realize….

I need to not think about it. I need to focus on my duties. I plan on going out to see if I can speak with the Sylphs tonight. I have a meeting set with one who knows of the Touched. Not sure how far I will get, but I need to try. I need something to keep my mind busy.

Several lines are scratched out beyond recognition.

Well, it is all planned. I got the mushroom whiskey through Relan, it was a bit challenging but he did it for me. I left a message with Eos to pass to Nev. And I left a message for Joundi. I know this is the right thing, the best thing. The setting should be perfect. I know…I would want to hear declarations of love in such a beautiful place. They just need to realize they are perfect for each other. I prayed to Menphina that it would happen….it must.

Poe’s Journal Entry

Exhaustion…my work, my training as a Mender has drained me so. Perhaps it was why Lan-I-Mata insisted on the Mender robes. I gathered everything she needed and the following day she presented me with a long robe, green and black, soft to the touch but durable. She had mentioned before about my heightened abilities and sensitivity while in the Shroud, these robes should help protect me and others.

She then brought me to the Eastern Shroud, the Sanctum where I met my sylph contact, Jaxio. I can’t deny, I was nervous. These small creatures and their language of the trees….I need to befriend them, let them see I am working with them. Our meeting went well enough…Jaxio said to meet me again at the Sanctum at the next full moon in a few days and they will escort me into the deeper woods of the Shroud.

I….I would have asked Joundi to come, but…. he doesn’t need to be confused any more. He has feelings for Nev.

Ry has been busy training. I can see the difference. I do miss the quiet nights though, he is now often training until the sun starts to rise. And I am often in the Shroud until later and my exhaustion has had me fast asleep before he would return. Perhaps a night away?

Ry let me know Mota approached him the other evening, Laura confirmed this. I suspected as much as she found me later that evening, threatening them. I have to prepare myself that Mota might do anything to anyone I care for. I did try to warn them, it was so long ago and I don’t think anyone truly considered her a threat…

And…this Elezen, Tellurian. His statements….veiled comments….he looks to me and makes them. At first I tried to ignore it all, but I will admit…it has gotten under my skin. I don’t know what he is insinuating. Perhaps…I do. But regardless. I don’t understand why he comes about and says these things. He seems to find delight in causing other pains…and his comments…are painful.

Lan-I-Mata suggested a small retreat to Outer La Noscea. She said I would be able to rejuvenate myself, clear my head. Perhaps she is right, adjusting to the duties of a Mender, not seeing Ry…and….losing Joundi’s….friendship….I need some quiet, to sit…and think.

A glimpse into Mota's life

Mota had been watching her for some time. The soft sounds of her singing was enough to make Mota sneer. Stepping out from the shadows of the trees, Mota clapped her hands slowly, “I do remember that song well from when we were little.”

Poe turned, looking startled as she turned to gaze upon Mota. Poe could feel her ears wilting against her own wishes, her voice soft, “Mota.”

The elder sister grinned, sauntering closer as her tail swayed. Stopping in front of Poe, Mota placed a hand on her hip and eyed her younger sister up down, “You are letting your hair grow out….and these new robes?” Mota reached out to touch the robes, Poe pulling back just before she could.

“What do you want? This is a sacred place and your presence is not wanted.” Poe attempted to say it with as much dignity and kindness that she could muster.

Mota laughed lightly, waving her off as she started to pace around Poe, looking her over. “You know why I am here. Just give us back what belongs to our family and I will let you be.” Mota pauses, her smirk widening, “Oh….and that boy of yours. He will be my new pet.”

Poe’s growl was low, “You leave Ry alone. I swear if you touch him…”

Mota grinned, shrugging lightly, “You are inferior in every way. You know if I claim him there is nothing you can do about it.” Mota tapped her chin thoughtfully, “I actually got to spend some time with him recently, at the Bismark. A few of your crew members as well. There is this luscious Laura…I can imagine all the fun things I can do with her, make her purr…have you noticed how beautiful her thighs are?”

Poe’s eyes widened, “You leave them alone. If you hurt any of them, I will….I will hunt you down.”

Mota sneered, “And do what? Oh…your Elezen crew member, he is a fiery one. Strong too. Not to my tastes, but you have always had a soft spot for the broken.”

Poe looked away, swallowing before speaking, “He is not broken. He is stronger than you could imagine.”

Mota raised a brow, her confident smirk returning to her face, “As I said. Now give me back the Willow wood and Ryillin and this will all go away.”

Poe shook her head, “I don’t want to have to fight you, but I will. You have no idea what you would be facing.” With some restrained anger, Poe raised her hand, murmuring softly as a steady wind started to swirl around them. Suddenly the foliage from the plants around them started to grow, long vines extending as they drove up from the ground, wrapping around Mota’s ankles and pinning her hands to her side. The look of surprise on Mota’s face was worth it. Poe stepped closer to her elder sister, gaze steady, “You will not hurt a single one of them. I promise you that.”

Mota did her best to hide her shock, “So you have become a Mender…interesting.” Mota looked over her sister’s robes, “And these threads have a power as well.” Poe could see the calculating look, deciding to not answer any of the comments. Dropping her hand, the vines slowly withdrew and curled back into the softened earth. Mota almost breathed a sigh of relief, grinning at Poe.

“You aren’t a fighter…you will lose this battle.”

Poe took a slow, deep breath, “Go back home. Tell Sula to leave me and those I care about alone…or I will be forced to take action.”

Mota smirked, backing away from the clearing, her voice sing-songy, “I will take what I want…”

Poe closed her eyes, preparing to blast Mota with another gust of wind, but when she opened her eyes, her sister was gone.

Poe’s Journal Entry

My training has kept me busy…sadly too busy at times to keep up with my own thoughts. I hope I can make sense of some of this once it is all written.

Several nights ago X’hayu came over the pearl, asking for help. It seems Steinn had been kidnapped. At first it seemed odd. A group of us gathered in Ul’dah to discuss what was going on. Suspicions were that the Empire had him. X’hayu did agree with me that Steinn was not the careless type, so it was unclear what kind of leverage they had on him since he went willingly. It seems X’hayu’s thought was to somehow bust him out. Eos of course had to point out that Joundi would have information on where they would keep prisoners. Not that I wanted to involve him, but I had to say he might know. It was nice to see Nev, she had been able to sneak away to meet us when X’hayu made the call.

Later, I met up with her for some drinks at the tavern. She called me out on my set-up for her and Joundi. I know I am pushing it…but I was just thinking it would make everything easier. She seemed to realize that was my intention. It…it was nice to just be able to talk, not worry about anything. Tellurian showed up, I will admit I was edgy he was around. But he was pleasant, giving us invitations to a party he will be hosting. I had some excitement about this, Ryillin was invited as well and I was immediately thinking how nice it would be if he would come, would leave his training and research to rest of an evening. Many departed from the conversation and it was just Nev and I. It was nice…so nice. But then Joundi showed up. So I quickly left…

I went to Relan’s. He appeared more tense than usual. The old man’s age is starting to show. He sat me down, told me he had heard of Mota sniffing around town. He warned me simply because he didn’t want me to be surprised. I spoke briefly of my encounter with her a week or so ago. He sat quietly, smoking his pipe. He offered me a hug, looking me over. I could tell he wanted to say more, but he didn’t.

I can tell I have been too wrapped up in my head, in the business in the Shroud. Clearly, as perhaps my memories haven’t been as clear as I am used to. I went to Tellurian’s party. It was wonderful, I remember leaving there feeling euphoric. Perhaps for so many reasons. There were plenty of drinks to be had, so many Cherryaid drinks. And Tellurian was actually really nice. We ended up laughing about so much. Everyone seemed so happy. I remember hazy glimpses as I walked off the beach, cups every where and the sound of others laughing, enjoying themselves. It had been a great party, Joundi wasn’t there so I was able to relax.

Joundi…I had been so wrong about him. I thought he was nice…until I remembered exactly how he had treated me. I…I will make sure he doesn’t hurt Nev in that same way, while she can make decisions for herself, if he does that to her as well, I swear to Menphina…. There is a pause in the writing, a large section of the paper left blank.

I started thinking about how I have managed this far…I know this journal, these thoughts, they help. They help me figure things out. Ry’s training has kept him busy and my work in the Shroud has kept us apart. So I thought perhaps he would like something to write stuff down in as well. I went to Gridania and had a small leather journal made for him. I ran into Tellurian while I waited to see if I could track Ry down. The three of us ended up on the topic of Joundi and his curse. It seems Tellurian is offering to help Ryillin in trying to locate a cure. I will admit….I almost choked on the word ‘friend’ when I spoke of Joundi. I don’t think I can say he is a friend of mine…perhaps to others though. I sighed with relief when Ry teleported us off. A night in his arms was -exactly- what I needed.

A few days later, X’hayu called over the pearl. She had more information on Steinn. Steinn has never been anything but kind to me, we worked well together when negotiating our price for the necklace beforehand. So of course I quickly offered. My luck, Joundi offered as well. So the three of us gathered. Since Joundi and I lacked uniforms, X’hayu suggested she bring us in as prisoners. Reluctantly I agreed…though….I couldn’t even watch while she roughed Joundi up. I know…I know that it would make it believable, but he also can’t be cured from wounds like the rest of us can be. But fine!-

It was a mess in there, we managed to sneak past enough of them, Owen found us and was able to help as well. X’hayu located the folder on Steinn and Owen ported us out with some device he had. But…I had forgotten….Joundi was left behind, the aetheric energies to port us out….he couldn’t…

I don’t think we realized at first, looking the file over and realizing the Empire had -everything- on our families. Ryillin showed up, looking tense and we discussed letting the captain know as well. Then Joundi came along…he…he looked awful. Clearly he had been attacked. Bleeding, bruised…I tried to help while Ry called the captain. The rest feels like a fog. Joundi just collapsed…and…was…

I know he was, I could tell. The very energy, the life force I feel within others, his was -gone-. And Ry and the captain, they tried to help. It was more than I could handle and ran.

Shameful, I know. I am a coward. I walked for a while, aimlessly. I realized I needed to get back to the Shroud; needed to bury my head and my heart in work. Arriving I found Joundi….

He was upset, he didn’t understand what had happened. I didn’t understand it either. But then the conversation turned into a fight. He threw in my face I didn’t care about him. He…he even suggested that I knew he would be left behind when Owen used his device. I growled back that he was the one that threw me away…and he kept acting like I was crazy. Kept saying he didn’t know what I was talking about. How hurtful…I never should have trusted him. But I could tell he was in pain, confused still. I quickly called Ry to explain to me what had happened.

Ry arrived and stated he was wondering if his own barrier had somehow helped Joundi when he tried to spark his heart back into beating. Something seemed off about Ry…I couldn’t place it then, I figured everything was already confusing, Joundi telling me he didn’t remember what I was talking about, perhaps I was wrong about Ry as well. Ry headed off, promising we would meet back at our place when he was done with some work. I went back to the gates to quickly make sure Joundi had made it off ok, but he was sitting there. And he got mad…again. He said one minute I was being nice and caring and the next minute becoming upset about things that never happened…..

Never happened…

I stormed off again. I needed sleep. I tossed and turned most of the night, my dreams haunting me. I couldn’t understand them and I was left feeling confused. I worry Mota will try to hurt those I care about, I miss Ry with his intense training, I miss Nev while she continues her…’research’…and I…I do miss Joundi.

Everything has come undone…I had to tell Ryillin…the pain on his face. I swore to him I never meant to hurt him. And there was no way he would accept my apology…my comfort, no matter how many times I pleaded and told him I would have told him at the party but I didn’t want to ruin it. Then he sent me…away.

The message was clear enough….and I can only accept and respect his wishes to not see me. Seems that is now the theme in my life, leave others alone. Lan-I-Mata was pushing for me to take a day or two to myself. I refused, throwing myself into my work harder. If there is any silver lining, meetings with the Touched have improved….at least they show up now.

After my visit deep into the Shroud today, Lan-I-Mata followed me back to the Sanctum. She huffed and puffed, stated she should send me on another journey to get my head on straight. Then she seemed to have a bright idea…said I needed to work through the pain and not avoid it. She took my pearls for safe keeping, packed my bag and sent me on my way. Told me to come back no sooner than five days from now…. I knew where she was sending me…I don’t feel like going there, even if it is quiet…

A glimpse into Mota's life

Sula was sitting at her desk, pouring over the latest sales and stock records. A small knock on the door, Sula looked up, “Enter.”

Her eldest sauntered through the doors, firmly closing them behind her. Sula gave her an annoyed sigh. “Mota…good to see you have returned. Have you made progress? I don’t need to remind you how important it is that we have a female born with aetheric abilities.”

Mota sits down, crossing her legs and lounging back in the chair with a confident smirk. “Like I said, it has all been taken care of.”

Sula tilts her head, her eyes narrowing, “Oh?”

Mota smiles wider, “He has been obeying as I said he would. I am sure I will be with child soon enough.” Something flashed in her eyes and Sula frowned as she caught it.

“Mota…might I remind you that there is no place for…feelings here. Your sister failed us enough in that department. Just complete your duty.”

Mota laughs it off lightly, “Like you said, seduction skills are all I need. Between that and his submission, this is purely a business arrangement.”

Sula looks back down to her books, waving Mota off, “Good. Please report back in a few days…I want this done soon.”

Mota sat for a few more moments, watching her mother before standing up, “I have given him the freedom to come and go. And the right to speak. I know he told Poe the other evening.”

Sula slammed the book shut, standing up to glare at Mota in the eyes, “What?”

It was Mota’s turn to wave off her mother in a dismissive manner. “She won’t interfere.” Sula clearly was not as convinced. A sharp knock on the door caused both women to turn. Another Miqo’te female entered, looking apologetic and nervous.

“Matron…there…there is a visitor here to see you.”

Sula and Mota looked to each other with smile. “I guess she has come by to chat.”

Poe absently waves Jaxio away. The sylph had been fluttering about anxiously since Poe had returned to the Sanctum. Poe had been staring at her journal, slowly ripping out page by page and letting it flutter into the shallow pool of water she sat beside. Jaxio flew closer again, plant like arms reaching out to gently stroke Poe’s hair, “Mender One is upset. Mender One destroys important things.”

Poe would have laughed at the irony of statement if she had it in her. Finally dumping the damaged leather binding into the water, she stood, brushing Jaxio away. The sylph made a hurt sound, spinning around a few moments and following the Miqo’te, “Mender One is not calm.” Poe was about to snap at the sylph but took a deep breath, turning to Jaxio, “I am sorry. You are right. I am not calm.” Poe pauses, pursing her lips as she considers her next move. Turning to look at Jaxio, Poe offers the small winged creature a sad smile, “Things have changed now, Jaxio.” Jaxio twirls in the air, humming lightly but simply follows behind Poe as she moves to a bench. She carefully removes two necklaces; one she had gifted to Ryillin made from the Willow tree wood, and the one he had gifted to her. Her hands were shaking when she opened the locket from his. She carefully caressed a finger over the raised writing, hearing the soft murmur of her name in her ear. Jaxio fluttered down, peering into Poe’s hands and back up to her.

“Mender One removes treasure.”

Poe closed her eyes and simply nodded, tucking the two pieces into a small velvet bag and raising the bag to Jaxio, “I need you to guard this. If…if I don’t come back, you must follow the plan, ok?”

The stubborn flying creature gasped, shouting loudly, “Mender One must return! The Woken have come to trust Mender One.” Jaxio reluctantly took the bag.

Poe nodded, looking to Jaxio, “I realize this. But if I can’t stand for my own beliefs and principles, I don’t deserve to speak for the Forest and all of you.” Poe stood and took one final glance around the Sanctum. Jaxio fluttered anxiously in front of her. Poe reaches up and affectionately touches the Sylph’s delicate hand, quickly moving past Jaxio and leaves.

* * * *

Poe took the familiar path, knowing full well they would know she was coming long before she arrived. The tribe didn’t disappoint, as she walked out into the opening, the familiar call could be heard. Miqo’te started to gather, coming out from the small buildings and the treeline, everyone looking on with interest. She could hear the whispers.

“Is that the Matron’s daughter?” “A Mender, why is a Mender here?” “Have they come to heal the Willow tree?”

“I heard she is friends with the Touched!” “She was told to never come back.”

Poe kept her head up, walking toward the main building she knew her mother resided in. Several huntresses lounged on the porch steps, one stepped in front of Poe. Poe looked down at her, recognizing the childhood friend. The huntress smirked, poking Poe in the shoulder, “I recall you were told you were no longer welcome.” Poe continues to stare at the Miqo’te with her intense green eyes and moves to step around her. The huntress shifts, again getting in Poe’s way.

“Ajha…I wish you no harm. Please let me pass.” Poe could hear the thinly veiled anger in her voice, making it sound thready. Ajha’s smirk widened, her canines flashing. As she opened her mouth to speak, another huntress emerged from the front doors, “Visitors are not often welcome here. Though I believe the Matron will make an exception.” Ajha closed her mouth and Poe nodded, shifting past the old friend.

Poe followed the huntress inside, waiting in the small entryway as the Miqo’te disappeared, likely informing her mother she was there. Several long moments later, the huntress returned, motioning for Poe to head down to Sula’s office. How long has it been since I was last in my mother’s office? Poe didn’t notice the group of huntresses gathering behind her as she headed down the hall.

Taking a deep breath, she knocked at the double doors and entered without waiting for a response. Sula and Mota were waiting; Mota sitting on the edge of the large oak desk, Sula sitting behind it in a large velvet clothed chair. Poe closed the door softly, turning to the two as she folds her hands together.

Mota jumped off, her grin wide, tail flicking from side to side as she sauntered toward Poe. Poe’s eyes narrowed but remained silent. Sula leaned forward, eagerly smiling, “The family back together. Isn’t this nice?” Mota flashed a grin over her shoulder to their mother. Poe let out a long breath, almost growling. Sula laughed mockingly, “And I thought most Menders were calm and level headed.”

Breathe…

Mota leaned in, her voice a soft whisper, “You have nothing now…”

Poe canted her head, a flash in her eyes as she spoke, “Enough.”

Sula stood, shaking her head, “This all ends when you return the Willow tree wood. You can return or not, but that wood is ours.”

The anger, the rage that had been simmering below the calm exterior bubbled up. “Enough!” She yelled again, one hand raising as she forces a gust of wind to blow over the oak desk, papers scattering and dumping the ink fountains over. Mota turned, shocked. Sula immediately called out. Poe twisted toward the door, raising her other hand as she murmured a quick conjuration, forcing a strong, steady blast of wind to press against the doors in hopes of preventing any from entering the room.

Sula’s eyes opened with alarm, calling out again. Mota turned to strike Poe. Neither woman was skilled in close combat, but Poe’s distinct height advantage was the difference. Grabbing Mota’s hand, Poe wrenched it hard, hearing a satisfying tearing of ligaments as her free hand grabbed her older half-sister’s hair, jerking it tight.

The sound from the hallway increased, the banging and thumping on the door growing in volumes as the doors seemed to bow under the pressure. Poe used her weight, momentum slamming Mota against the office wall. Poe drove her sister’s head once more into the rigid structure, the female slumping and collapsing to the floor in a heap.

Her breathing now ragged, Poe turned, head tipped down as her eyes narrowed on her mother. Sula had backed up, placing not only the desk but also the chair between them. Poe took a step closer, Sula anxiously shifting behind the furniture.

“Let him go,” Poe’s voice was a growl, her hands clenching and unclenching. A quick glance and she confirmed her gusting wind was still holding the large double doors closed. She could see Sula swallow nervously and the fear was suddenly intoxicating to see. Her voice dark, Poe spoke once more, “End this…now.” The heady thrill started to wash over her, Poe almost staggered under it. Leaping over the desk and landing on the chair, Poe reached for Sula, grabbing the Matron by her shoulder. Tipping the chair over to pin Sula against the wall, Poe reached up, her other hand gripping tightly around her mother’s neck and squeezing. Sula’s eyes opened wide, panic clear as she gasped for air. Poe grinned, her eyes dark as she stared down at her mother, her grip tightening further.

The Matron attempted to claw at Poe and Poe shook her by the throat once, bellowing, “Stop!” Mota’s eyes were becoming unfocused, the wretched gasping sounds filling the air. Poe could feel herself starting to slip, her perception altered as she stared down at the one woman she hated more than anything.

It was then she felt the sudden pain. Whimpering in pain, her hands release Sula and she turns, facing Mota. Her sister had hit her across the ribs with the handle of a gardening tool and Poe was caught off guard as a second strike hit her square across the cheekbone. Poe staggered, dropping to her knees as she raised a hand, sending a blast of wind towards her sister. Mota was thrown back, the impact of her body on the wall a loud thud.

But Sula was quick ad Poe found her hair pulled tight, neck exposed as Sula slowly dragged a knife delicately across her skin, “My little Poe. I did not expect this, what a pity I had not realized your potential earlier.” Poe squirmed angrily but her concentration had been broken. The wind keeping the doors at bay silenced and several huntresses poured through the doorway. Arrows drawn, they stood awaiting orders from the Matron. Heated, raspy breathing resonated in the room, it dawning on Poe it was hers. Poe attempted to move, Sula anticipated and brought the dagger low, impaling it between Poe’s ribs on her right side. A weak gasp, Sula smirks at Poe, backhanding her across the cheek. Poe collapsed to all fours, the taste of blood in her mouth. Her cheek stung, realizing she had also been cut there. Coughing up some blood, Poe woozily attempted to right herself. A swift kick from Sula stopped her, Poe collapsing further onto the floor. The other huntresses smiled, enjoying the display of power by the Matron. Sula knelt down beside Poe, whispering into her ear, “You were so close…” The Matron reached down and quickly jerked the blade still impaled into Poe’s side. The loud crunch of ribs would have made Poe grimace if the pain hadn’t caused her to lose consciousness. Her form still on the ground, the crimson stain started to spread on her robes, another small pool forming under her lips, her breathing now sounding wet as the blood started to drool out.

Sula pulled the blade out and stood, brushing the hair from her eyes. Mota was sitting groggily against the wall. Sula glared at her, “Your priority is the child. Make it happen…-now-.” Sula looked down at her younger daughter’s collapsed body. Turning to the huntresses, she waves a hand. “Dump her off near the Eastern Shroud.”

One huntress spoke, “But Matron-“

Sula glared at her, interrupting, “She is a Mender. She can heal herself if she wants.” Poe’s body was roughly picked up, the two huntresses half dragging her from the office. Sula turned to the remaining Miqo’te, “Get this room cleaned up and prepare for the male.”

* * * *

The moon had long been in the sky. Jaxio floated along, singing loudly, “Woken Ones, Spoken Ones, Broken Ones.” The sylph stopped, curiously looking down a side path as it saw something out of place. A crumpled heap. Fluttering closer, Jaxio gasps, “Mender One, Mender One.” Affectionately lowering it’s hand, it stroked over Poe’s ear and through her hair. But the Miqo’te did not move. Jaxio chirped, again touching the female’s ear, “Mender One never lets Jaxio touch ears…” Jaxio panicked, “Mender One, Mender One, open eyes!” As Poe lay unresponsive, Jaxio did the only thing the poor creature could think of, bring her to the Sanctum and send word to the Sylph Stronghold.

Sula stood, looking out over the enclosed garden space, her eyes filled with rage. Grinding her teeth, she turns suddenly, the huntresses at her side flinching slightly as the Matron stalks back to her building. Slamming the office door, Sula sat down, trying to hold what little composure she had left together. Her eldest, the one who would become Matron some day had single-handedly destroyed the garden, the crops simply ash. It mattered little that it was done by the hand of the powerful male. Mota was supposed to keep him in control and she had not.

Mota had paid for it dearly, the Miqo’te had barely been able to walk the following morning, the bruising on her flesh evident. A knock on the door and Sula nearly yelled for them to enter. Mota meekly walked in, head down and gaze averted as she quietly closed the door behind her, moving to stand in front of the large wooden desk.

Sula gave her a cross look, “Well….?”

Mota looked up quickly, trying to keep a brave face, “I will be contacting the mage who helped create the submission potion. I am not sure at this time if he can help, but it seems the best possibility.

Sula snarled, “Why have you not contacted him already?”

Mota jumped slightly, “I sent word for him before I arrived. I hope to hear back from him soon.”

Sula nodded, “You best hope he can fix this mess.” She dismissively waves her eldest daughter out of the room, turning in her chair to ponder her next move.

Jaxio fluttered nervously over the Miqo’te’s form, mumbling to itself. Back and forth, back and forth the sylph went, dipping down once in a while to anxiously stroke Poe’s hair and ear. She had still not stirred and Jaxio was becoming anxious. The sylph had tended to her wounds but she still had not roused from unconsciousness. Several sylphs had come down from the stronghold, inspecting the Mender’s wounds. One suggested that the weapon used by Sula had been coated in some form of sleeping potion, “Best if Mender One sleeps.” Jaxio had wilted at the suggestion but did not attempt to wake her.

There had been enough rumors deep within the Shroud. The sky had filled with smoke, the smell of a fire was in the air the same day Poe had gone to see her family. Jaxio did not know any more details and a full day of rest was more than the little winged creature could bear. Jaxio quickly flew over to Poe’s corner where she stored her items while at the Sanctum. Pulling out the one leather bound book she had not destroyed, Jaxio opens it up and taps it’s small plant-like hands across the paper, looking for something. Jaxio wilts, realizing her requests written specifically said to not get anyone else involved. The sylph pulls out the small velvet pouch and touches the two necklaces. Ryillin’s necklace made from the Willow wood felt warm to the touch and Jaxio curiously poked it again. Wrapping the necklace around it’s neck, Jaxio fluttered up and moved back to Poe, sitting on her hip as she lay sleeping on her side on the bench. Absently touching her hand, Jaxio makes a small sad sound, noticing the deep slice still on her left cheek.

“Mender One is stubborn. Helps everyone else but does not help self.” Jaxio quickly shot up into the air, nodding, “Sometimes Mender One is wrong. Jaxio will not break rules if Jaxio finds help in Shroud. Maybe Jaxio find Mender One’s mate.” Moving to once more affectionately stroke through Poe’s hair and her ear, the sylph wilts once more when she does not stir, though her breathing was deep and steady. Jaxio knew she would wake soon enough, but it did not hurt to see if friends could be found. Looking once more at Poe, Jaxio flutters down the path and exits the Sanctum, on a mission directly against Poe’s wishes.

Mota stretched and sauntered into the Matron’s office without bothering to knock. Sula looked up, a quick frown on her face, “Have you no respect?”

Mota smirked and sat down in one of the chairs before the desk, crossing her legs over one arm as she continued to grin. Sula started to slowly smile herself, “Oh…I indeed wondered by the…sounds of the evening if you had fulfilled your duty.” Sula leaned across the desk, curiously inspecting Mota.

Mota scoffed at her, “Of course. Angry little mage, yes….but I assure you, it all went as planned.”

Sula took a deep breath of relief, “Excellent. I will ask for confirmation. We shall summon a mage to indeed confirm you are with child. This Mender, she must be more powerful than your sister.”

Mota frowns a moment, “You know she will be, you have seen his power. How could you not expect that?”

Sula laughs suddenly, “I would suggest we celebrate with a drink, but the best thing for you would be some willow root tea…to help enhance this child’s capabilities.” Sula turns and quickly opens a small cabinet that hung on the side wall, pulling out a small glass jar. She frowns as she holds it up to the light, shaking it. “Barely enough for one cup…” She growls but quickly calms herself, looking back to Mota, “We shall make sure that is our next focus, after we have confirmation.”

Mota nods, mentioning, “I have called upon the same mage who helped me with the submission potion. I expect he can help.” Mota trails off, smiling as she recalls the last piece she wished to discuss, “So…the mate that was supposed to be for Poe….”

Sula looked up, surprised, “Indeed. What made you bring him up?”

Mota smiles coyly, “Well, I happened to run into him last night. He confessed it without me even asking.”

Sula’s eyes narrow and darken, “I see. And you recall his name?” Mota nods. Sula continues, “Perfect. Bring him to me.”

Jaxio nudges her right elbow, “Mender One, elbow up!” Poe sighs, lowering her arms and the bow within her hands. Looking the sylph over, she shakes her head and looks up to the sky. Why are you doing this at all?

Jaxio immediately flutters up around her head and reaches out to stroke along her hair and ear. Poe waves a hand, trying to brush the creature away, “Always trying to touch my ears.” Jaxio makes a hurt sound and Poe immediately feels guilty, relenting as she motions to the creature. Jaxio smiles happily and settles down on her shoulder, stroking it’s small hands through her long hair. Poe carefully starts to head back to the Sanctum, keeping in mind of Jaxio’s precarious position on her shoulder. The sylph loudly babbles in her ear as they continue their trek through the forest. Finally Jaxio blurts out, “Mender One is so detached.”

Poe’s first reaction was to yell at the sylph but she catches herself. Nodding, she finally responds, “You are right. It’s just…all my best intentions ended poorly. I am not used of trying so hard for others’ happiness and seeing it…backfire…nor did I expect it to hurt so much to see…” Jaxio flutters off of Poe’s shoulder and floats in front of her face, each soft plant-like hand firmly grasping her cheek. Poe looks at the sylph, her eyes dropping, “I know, Jaxio. I know…” Jaxio nods and moves back to her shoulder, lightly touching the tip of her ear before laughing softly and releasing it as Poe twitches her ear and growls.

Poe continues on the path, now speaking more out loud to herself than anything, “You know, I didn’t expect Tellurian to come and see how I was. But he is right, we are friends. Nice to know he would be concerned.” She absently reaches up to touch the scar on her cheek, “Perhaps a fresh start is what I need. He suggested it himself. Maybe for once, I won’t worry what others think, I will do as I want. Everyone else does, so why can’t I?” The rest of her walk was in silence, her mind clearly preoccupied as she started to wonder, If I only do as I choose, what kind of choices would I make?

Poe wandered down along stalls, keeping her hat pulled low over her brow and her gaze averted. She was starting to dislike returning to the city for supplies and had tried unsuccessfully to hire someone to do so for her. Stopping out a few stalls to pick up items for the next few days, she felt a quick poke in her ribs. Still incredibly sore, Poe turned, snarling to be met with a quick bear hug.

“Angel!” If her face hadn’t been muffled by the hug, the surprise would have been clear. She recognized the scent immediately and squirmed, pulling back, shock in her face.

“Gel?” Her eyes wandered over the Miqo’te and she finally smiled, “How are you?”

The male rocked back on his heels, wide smirk as he effortlessly tossed his hair from his eyes, “Oh you know. Came here hunting for my little Mender friend.” Poe immediately blushes, opening her mouth to say something but he laughs and stops her, “I ran into Relan a few days ago, after I got in from a business trip of my own.” His expression turned a bit more somber, “Says you are working yourself into the ground and cut off from everyone.” She could feel his penetrating stare and he finally flicked the brim of her hat back. She made it clear her annoyance and he burst into laughter again, “Still a little spitfire. I bet no one ever sees this side of you.” No one cares to…

Wrapping his arm casually over her shoulder, he starts leading her down the walkway from the stalls. Poe remained silent and while Gel indeed notice, he didn’t say anything for a while. Finally he stopped, gripping her shoulders as he faced her around to stare at her, “Look Angel. I can tell something is eating you up inside. Come hang out with my crew for the night. It will get you away from everything. Come be free, even if it’s just until the sun comes back up.” A million reasons why she shouldn’t raced through her mind but one small smile from Gel and she relented.

“Fine…” She rolled her eyes at him and he laughed, wrapping his arm back around her.

“You were always the only woman who the crew was willing to let come around. Wenches don’t count, you know that.” Gel continued to ramble on as they headed out of the city.

Poe walked around, stunned by the view, “This place….is amazing.” Gel grinned, rocking back on his heels again, tail softly swaying as he watched his long time friend take in his place.

“Yup, we have been working hard…saving every last bit. We now have this great place…” Poe looked envious, listening to the waves crash. Gel had given her a tour of the crew’s new home and she was standing out on balcony off of his office. She fumbled in her pockets and pulled out a cigar, lighting it. He laughed, suddenly close to her as she turned around.

“Still smoking I see…” He raised a brow and pulled the cigar from her lips to have some himself, setting it back between her lips as she stared at him, “You know Doll-face, little innocent looks like that and I am going to reconsider asking you to come join the crew.”

Poe looked stunned, “Join…your crew?” She shook her head.

Gel raised his hand, “I know. I already heard about your duties from Relan, it won’t interfere. I promise.” Poe turned to look back out over the ocean and he moved to stand beside her, his tail teasingly hitting hers. Several silent moments, he finally spoke, his tone more serious, “What has happened to you? You have lost that sparkle in your eyes.” Poe refused to look at him, continuing to stare out over the water. He grabbed her angrily now and she growled, slapping him clear across the face.

The look of shock on his face was priceless and then the male was suddenly doubled over laughing. Poe wasn’t, she was seething as she glared at him. He nodded, “A spitfire still. It’s why I have always loved you.” He moved back beside her, wrapping his arm over her shoulder and his voice soft, “It’s been bad…hasn’t it?” Poe turned to him, tears suddenly pouring down her face, nodding.

“How about we have a drink and you tell me everything, ok?”

“That is a lot…I can see why you have done what you have.” Gel moved from his chair to sit on the edge of his desk in front of Poe. She had been curled up in a chair, her expression still neutral.

He bent over to look her in the eyes, “Hey….remember what your old friend….what was it, Ace? You said they were concerned no one appreciated you for anything but someone to fix their wounds.” Poe didn’t say anything but suddenly felt how true that statement seemed.

“Well, our crew here…you know we love you. Fiery, compassionate, smart, I refuse to sit here and tell you all the great things. We see you as more than someone to patch us up after a bar brawl. Come on, you would be happy here. And I promise, it won’t interfere with your Mender duties.” He paused to reach out and take her hands, ” You care too much, it’s eating you alive. Both of those men, fools. They clearly didn’t want you in their life. Let them go.” Poe refused to look at him and he knelt down in front of her, grabbing her shoulders, “Look at me.”

Poe finally looked up and met Gel’s stare. He offered a small smile, leaning in to whisper in her ear, “Just let go…”

Perhaps it was the exhaustion or the hopelessness, but Gel was right. The sound of the house guests were now filling the halls and the music playing out on the front lawn was enticing. She nodded, standing, “Just a night. It would be nice to see the guys…”

Gel grinned, “That’s the spirit. I will have you join this crew before you even know it.” Poe gave him a look and he laughed again, “Angel, keep making eyes like that and I will finally make a true attempt at seducing you.” He wrapped his arm around her once more, leading her to the door. Turning to Poe once more, Gel smiled, “We all care about you. You matter, ok? Let the rest of it go. Let it all go. When no one feels for you, you don’t have to feel for them.” He leaned over to the shelf, pulling down an old bottle, “From that heist we pulled for Relan, like old times, right? This is the last bottle. It’s yours…”

Poe took it, turning the bottle over in her hand. He slapped her firmly on the ass and opened the door of his office, giving her a nudge out to the main hallway, “Welcome to the party.”

Poe's Journal Entry

I couldn't write...not for a while. The pain I have caused...if nothing else, I have shown myself I am not above hurting others. When I talked with Ry, I tried to explain that I didn't think our story, our journey was done...the timing was not right, perhaps? He had been the one who kept pointing out I didn't know, how could I know that being with Joundi wasn't right for me. I didn't want to listen to that, but it kept stewing inside my head...and my heart. And in anger, I lashed out. At everyone.

I hope there will be a day they can all forgive me. I never meant to hurt any of them. But Lan-I-Mata pointed out, I can't stay stuck in the past, I must be in the present, the here and now. So we move forward.

Relan's health continues to deteriorate. He doesn't want me to know, his son, Davin was the one who told me. I need to plan a time to see him, I had stopped by his shop and found it closed. He wasn't there. I can only hope he took my letter to heart when I asked him to go to the hot springs for healing and rest.

I have kept the Willow wood safe. I dream nightly about growing it in front of a house...a home. And I have willingly let go of the trying to keep up with all the merchant business. After I saw Gel at his party, I found Zam. I didn't know she was still with them. It had been some time since I saw her and she continues to do great work for that crew. Gave her a pearl and told her to talk to the Captain. Zam already agreed to sell any harvests I have, so I can focus on the Shroud, my Mender duties and my friends.

Joundi has agreed to teach me how to use my staff as a defensive weapon. With everything that has happened, I fear what would become of me if I could not use my spells. It has also been my drive to pick the bow back up. I will admit, I am horrible. My arms shake, it's awkward. But with time, perhaps it will become easier. Ouma showed Raih and I some stuff and I keep practicing that when I have the chance. I know I will not be the Huntress that some are...but if I can keep myself safe, perhaps that is good enough.

Jaxio came sputtering to me this evening, Mota...is gone. He had only caught wind of it while flittering about the shroud, collecting carrots for the stew I am making. She has been missing for several days. Jaxio said a mage confirmed the child she carries is male. I didn't think...she had it in her to leave. Part of me is tempted to go see her...find her, but I am still so angry....it is only because she carries Ry's child that I haven't killed her with my bare hands.

We have some new crew members, poor Captain has subjected himself to some interesting things. (Thinking he was me???) I adore the Miqo'te addition, she brings sunshine where it has been so dark. Perhaps things will improve with this new energy.
