Candor Posted January 22, 2015 Share #1 Posted January 22, 2015 Lately I've gotten the itch to assemble a Free Company for myself and a few of the players I know, most likely because I'm a masochist who refuses to learn the lesson that FCs are a ton of work. However, the idea monster thrashes, so I do. My idea is slightly different than some of the others FCs I've seen about the game and LinkShell Hall - the Ishgardian House Haillenarte. Yes, it's a major political body in Ishgard, and yes, it's established in canon. In fact, those are two of the main reasons I selected it. Rather than create a non-canon entity that interacts with canon, I thought it might be fun for canon to drive some story arcs this time around. The other angle I intend to take is to not focus on the Haillenarte nobles themselves. The nobility is the smallest portion of any noble house, but the vast majority is made up of vassal houses, retainers, wards, soldiers, guardsman, and mercenaries, advisers, ministers, and craftsmen. These are the people the FC will focus on, and these are the roles the PCs will play, with the Haillenartes themselves being left to NPC-dom and their canon devices explored within the game's story. Chances are the development of this FC will take me some time, and I don't intend to open it to recruitment and such until the release of Heavensward. However, I would like to hear the community's thoughts and opinions, advice and references to any Ishgard and House Haillenarte lore. I've done my own research, but I may have missed something. So, please, comment as you like, and link what you want. I will greatly appreciate all feedback. Link to comment
Briggs Posted January 23, 2015 Share #2 Posted January 23, 2015 By all means, an Ishgardian house sounds like a novel house. However, keep in mind that FC canon or not, your PC can never be a sole proprietor of the Haillenarte name and there's no stopping other companies from opening under the same name. From what it sounds like that, you simply intend to start a splintered noble group, which is more than enough clarification to avoid any, "hey you can't own that" worries people might get.
