Bump as I've been neglecting this.

Well thank you And thanks to everyone who attended our play this weekend. We hoped you enjoyed yourselves, and be sure to look out for our next production.

Gotta house. Things are coming together.

Is being a fighting RPer a turn off to other RPer's?
Fenrir replied to LiveVoltage's topic in RP Discussion
We didn't reject you for being a combat RPer. We heard you out. We were willing to work with you. Everything seemed hunky-dory, we told you we'd prefer if we could avoid any combat because otherwise it's just six pissed off criminals against your lone character. You argued that because your character is a special serpent soldier they could fend off six people and walk it off. I stopped you there. I didn't do it in a good way. I apologized for calling you a mary sue, and then explained that one of our friends had just gotten done dealing with a dragoon doing this sort of stuff, and that we've personally dealt with it before in the past (another dragoon..) so we'd rather just call it off. I thought we ended on pretty amicable terms. I guess not. Next time, however, feel free to contact me and we can talk it out, because I assure you we did not pull out because you're a combat RPer. We obviously did it because you're a dragoon. -
We currently have a new play and a gambling den event in the works. Don't change that channel.

Right, I'm bloody back, and this idea is still interesting to me -- especially with Frontlines just having come out. Sadly, there's no /duel function in this game, and one vs one arenas aren't even a thing -- nor should they be, with how badly balanced PvP is in this game (and if you want to call me on that point, check the FL standings for Balmung this week and then shut up), so while I have fantasies of actually getting people to play the gladiators and the like, they'll have to do it in an RP fighting way. Now I'm not big on RP fighting, but the only alternative I can see has a major problem -- if we did make 8 man premade teams to break up and go into wolves den for battles, no one would be able to see the fights, which takes away a lot of the spectator business on this whole deal, and what good is that? What, are we meant to believe that fatcat investor from Ul'dah just sits around and eats grapes and waits for someone to walk out and tell him who won? No. So RP fighting it is. Now, great, there should be fighters, but what else can people do around this? Well, we'll need investors, cooks, bookkeepers, waiters/waitresses to see to the spectators, we'll need security and other heavy types, healers, and hell, we could also use some hippie types who want to get the whole thing disbanded. Also entertainment for when there's lulls in the gladiators beating the hell out of each other. So if you could see your character playing any of these roles, don 't be shy. A system for fights will need to be worked out, as well as a prize pool and any betting rules, but that's for later. Earn your glory in the ring. Earn a beating for trying to fix the fights. Take the apple of your eye on a date to see two people beat each other senseless. The possibilities are endless.

After concluding some business in the East, Lansquenet's leadership has returned, and the doors have been thrown back open.

Many thanks to those who participated tonight. We hope you enjoyed Raindrops' lovely adaptation of IX.

/say actually has a pathetically short range, and the Beds are big enough that dates can space out without overlapping too much.

Sadly, we do not regularly hold plays. However, we are planning for an event next month for Valentine's.

In need of some Female Miqot'e for some RP. (Balmung)
Fenrir replied to R'mah's topic in RP Discussion
Nebbs specifically said she didn't think it should be applied. You, however, didn't say that. I think this might better be brought up (for the sake of clarity and also because it doesn't exactly fit in with the conversation in this thread, which was about recruiting for specific RP, not labeling threads) in a separate thread. What do you think? So? And you're probably right. -

I think his argument was more that there's no graphic content in this thread, so why would it need a label? The people you'd want to "label" their posts are unlikely to read this thread anyway. But if the forum owners decide that it's needed, I'm sure people will do it. But this isn't fanfiction, and it isn't RP. This was a setup for RP in the game world, not on the forums. There's no graphic content in this thread at all. I don't understand why you would feel it needs to be labeled. Nebbs' post never said it should be applied to this thread. I never said it, either. But the tagging idea was brought up, and that's simply what I was arguing for. -

WoD roleplaying communities tag shit. That argument doesn't hold any water. So since someone else does it, then we must as well? I'm afraid your "argument" (airquotes mandatory, as you don't really have one) is the one that doesn't hold any water, my good sir. What I said isn't that hard to understand. Much the same as adding emoticons to your post doesn't make your response any less passive aggressive or annoying. I'll spell it out for you. Your argument is that because there's sexual themes in XIV, there's no call for us, as a community, to tag posts that contain graphic sexual or violent content that might upset someone. I'm telling you that there's plenty of other settings out there that dive much deeper into these themes, yet the people who play in them have the good grace to tag their stuff so they don't upset anyone. It's a very common thing these days. People usually call them trigger warnings. Being considerate of others isn't hard. They do? I admit that it's been a while since I've LARP'd or TT'd VtM or it's associated games (though I certainly miss WtA and MtA), but I don't recall anyone tagging shit. The setting itself is incredibly dark and violent and, quite frankly, vile, if you read the source material. What communities are you talking about anyway? Forum roleplays are what I'm referring to. There's other examples, such as fanfiction archives and the like. -

This thread's metaphorical cup is entirely too full. Let's empty it a little. I cut my MMO teeth on DAoC. I was a high warlord in early vanilla WoW on my warrior. I once got up at 4 in the morning several weekends in a row to defend my stupid emperium in Ragnarok Online back when I was a dumb teenager. What I'm trying to say is that I'm big into PvP. I recognize that PvP came in as an afterthought in FFXIV. I recognize that it is more of a fun little mini-game at the moment than a full-blown way of playing the game. Yet I can't help but be disappointed. There's little strategy involved, and I doubt there'll be much of one unless they drastically overhaul the system. Basic things like "stick someone on the healer so they can't heal and blow up the stupid black mage" or "SLEEP THEM BEFORE THEY SLEEP US" serve as a .. kind of a strategy, but the execution isn't there. Then there's just the plain cardinal sin in any manner of PvP of having CC that lasts for more than 5 or so seconds at a time. Maybe the flaws of the system will be more easy to overlooked come 2.2 when we get those big battles I heard rumors of, but until then, I won't be going into PvP with my regular gusto. It's a fun little snack from time to time, but there's no meat to it just now. Not for me.

The stigma comes from the roleplayers we've all run into. The ones who want nothing more than to get their character into another character's pants. The ones who ruin plots and scenes because they can't do anything without focusing on romance or sex. I've seen whole storylines get jacked by these sorts of people, and you know what the majority of those types do when asked to tone it down? They get defensive, they whine, they claim they've done nothing wrong. Notice I said majority, not all. And really it's just starting to come off like ERPers have a persecution complex. Have fun ERPing. I don't care. No one cares. Literally no one cares. People get grumpy about it because there's hardly any reason to bring it up, but somehow it keeps being brought up. I can go my entire day without hearing about your ERP. There's also the fact that there are dedicated communities out there for this sort of thing, where you can get in contact with such like-minded people. I've not seen anyone come to these forums posting really dark, bloody, stomach-churning violence. I've written two little drabbles, and people die in both, but I kept their deaths lights. I tried to make sure no one would be put off by it. But I love dark RP. I love horror. I like violence, I like seediness, all that fun stuff, but most of the people I RP with don't appreciate that. I wrote a story once of one of my characters dousing some poor schmuck with gasoline and lighting them afire. I was playing a yakuza at the time. Yakuza are some crazy assholes. The response wasn't great. Did I get pissy? No, I made a note of it and I cut down on the content I presented that group with. People have hang-ups. I will question them, but they're those people's hang-ups at the end of the day, and I'd rather respect their wishes not to be exposed to shit they dislike than alienate or make them uncomfortable.

I've been asleep through most of it. Literally.

Well that opens things up. And she might indeed, assuming she wouldn't mind working with organized crime-types.

Sadly I don't believe any battles will be viewable, and if they are, people will be running around with the name Fresh Meat, because SE believes we're all terrible ten year old griefers or something? There'll certainly be some in-game challenges to handle, but like any RP in an MMO, that's almost to be expected. Sadly add-ons aren't out yet, and so we do not have the many wonderful tools that made WoW RP so.. hrm, easy, though I suppose I am mostly thinking of that one add-on that allowed you to create custom items. There's also the fact that until a /roll command is added to the game, actual in-game currency gambling likely won't be a thing, and even if it were, who knows if people would be interested in such things, and how SE would react to it (there were such things in XI, if I recall correctly, but I do not remember how SE handled them). So for the foreseeable future we will have to rely on our ~imaginations~ to get us through! And likely all gil exchanging hands will be imaginary, simply because that keeps things at their, well, simplest. Luckily though, even without seeing the PvP itself, or being a good PvPer, there's plenty of slots to be filled. Like I said, fixers, brokers, medics, even vendors and crafters could all fit in very nicely for those inclined to be on the, hrm, shady side of the whole affair. And then there's a whole load of things the more lawfully-inclined folk could get into.

The crowd roared. Two men fell. One took to his back. He didn’t get up again. The other slumped against a wall, sword resting across his knees. It wasn’t a good sword. The man was too hard on good swords – that’s why he bought cheap ones. It wasn’t worth much to begin with, and now it had chunks gone out the edge. Some might have said the same about the man using it. He wouldn’t disagree. He sucked in big, ragged breaths, and pushed himself to his feet, one hand on the wall for balance, and managed to force some attitude into the way he stalked over to the other man and planted a boot on his chest. He raised his sword. The roar grew deafening. Victory was sweet, they said. All he tasted was copper and salt. The knife-eared man underfoot wasn’t breathing. Elezens had always struck the man as too tall and narrow to be much use in battle, but this one had been a devil with a spear. That same wickedness could have done him a world of good had it spread further. Instead he’d been prideful and high-minded, stuck on honor and glory. He refused the wrong people. Lots had been shuffled. He’d done his job. Lives were worth more than ideals. He personally put the price at 200,000. --- The Wolves Den is an upcoming feature in patch 2.1, and I'm sure many of us are excited for it. The PvP itself will assuredly be a draw, but it would be a mistake to assume no new roleplay opportunities will pop up alongside it. Think of it! Glory, heroes, martial combat. Duels. Guards. Enterprising food vendors. Medics and healers. There will be all these new spots to be filled in around it! But don't lose yourself in the shiny light glimmering off all that fancy new PvP armor. There's a darker part to be mined. And while Lansquenet could do it alone, there's not much fun in that. A gambling den needs bodies. Security, fixers, accountants, dealers. And then there's all the people who would likely disapprove of such practices and want it snuffed out. So which side would you like to be on?

Please do get back to me on this, it'd be great to have some even if the crowd is not massive We've actually already come up with a few ideas for entertainment. I'll try and get in contact with you in-game, perhaps we can even set up an IC meeting. Either way, sign us up for entertainment and two or three bodies for security. -
