  1. I'm not sure honestly about that. I know there's been talk about a barber shop, but that maybe limited appearance changes. So it may not be something that can happen right off the bat. But from what I understand Square Enix seems really good about putting in things into the game that the players request. So maybe it's something that could be suggested for later patches. If the company is as willing to listen to its subscriber base as I've heard, it's simply another thing that makes this game so appealing.
  2. Playing an evil can be difficult. Though I've experience some really good Villian/Evil RP in other games. I'm generally an anything goes type of RPer so that can lead to some really crazy, interesting, and in depth villainy when you can find someone who's willing to allow almost anything to happen to their characters. One of the good things with the game I play now is that you can buy character renaming. This is nice because it opens up character death, because instead of having to role a new character should an old one die in RP, you can just pay a little for a rename and voila, you can use your already leveled character and give it a completely new backstory. You can even go so far as to use the barbershop in order to modify the characters look too.
  3. I'm excited that there are going to be quite a few people playing antagonists. I'm considering making an alt who is villainous/antagonist something along those line. I just was unsure how it was going to work since there is really only one faction in this game, versus multiple factions like other games.
  4. Okay having done a bit more research it the Lore of this new world that I'm excited to RP in, I've noticed that in general story terms we have the Garleans as enemies for the most part and even have a Garleans who have switched sides, one example being the NPC Cid. So there is an enemy for RP via the NPCs, but I was curious about IC villians. Are the anyone who are looking to be making their character ICly have a more villainous role? Or are most people just planning on using NPCs to full any RP story conflict?

I got my degree in chemistry and they let me count Biochem as an upper level Chemistry class at my college, since it was very organic chemistry related. All the memorizing!

    Lore help

I was thinking more of like a place for those exceptional students to met and trade ideas and thoughts. Kind of like Aristotle's or Socrate's discussions where ideas are shared to the betterment of all branches. Also there are branches of science that work together, example Biochemistry. So could there be branches of magic that build on one another. With this it's more curiosity about how the system works then trying to make something crazy for my character idea (just going to keep that one magic type or another.)
  7. I NEVER said anything about WHAT I wanted for my characters parents, as I'm personally of the mindset that story should be found out through RP so I don't give character spoilers. I am NOT out to make my character to be some FF14 OP God, again I'm familiar with how to RP and make my characters fallible and human, not Gods. I am a person curious as to who these entities and people are because, again, I am NEW to the Final Fantasy Lore, which is why I am asking questions in the first place. What I had found was very lacking in any real detail and since it was on a wiki I figured that maybe the post had just never been updated. So I figured I'd ask here, with the people who have experienced the lore first hand as they played the first game.
  8. Okay so when I started this post I meant it more as a curiosity of how this group of people handled things. In my experience different groups handle things differently, so I was just curious how y'all handled things. For example, with Star Wars, as this is where my experience is with RP, past forum RPs and my own personal writings, essentially there is two sets of lore. The official lore of Star Wars, which is solely relegated to the six Star Wars movies. This is what Lucas himself has said on the subject. All the other lore (the books, encyclopedias, etc.) is it's own separate world, an alternate reality. Which essentially says that a person can make up whatever lore up they want, i.e "fandom" is acceptable. As I'm not familiar with Final Fantasy in anyways, I came here as an experienced RPer looking for information about lore. Instead I get lectured on how to properly RP. If I offended anyone into thinking that their way of RP was wrong or that not having an in-depth backstory makes your character a generic character and not interesting, I apologize if it came across in that manner. That's not what I intended. However, how I RP and write is my PERSONAL choice, and being told that I should only "build my character through RP" and not worry about going into an in-depth backstory because that's the best way to do it, makes me generally feel as if I am being told that I RP WRONG. A character with an in-depth backstory can hugely change through RP. I just like to know who my character is and where my character comes from.
  9. THANKS!!! I'm sure this will help a lot. And I've already started asking questions that I've had when it comes to beginning to build the back story. Granted the questions I've asking have been pertaining more to my character's parent's backstories, so if things have to be retconned and changed it won't cause much in the way of change to my actual character. Like I said I'm very big about my backstories and such.
  10. Yes, the thought of having to Retcon is bad. But as a writer I thrive off of in-depth backstory and so far I've been running into wall because there doesn't seem to be much lore past what was seen in the first game (which I didn't play and so don't know a lot about) and with what is posted on the Official website. This lack of consistent direction has my head screaming because of giant gapping holes in the knowledge. I understand that this is a relatively new world and so there isn't a lot yet, but it just makes my eye twitch because when it comes to an in-depth backstory I'm essentially forced not to have and to me the in-depth stories allows more uniqueness to the character's personality. Everyone is the sum of their past exploits after all.
  11. Okay another question for you Lore Masters. As there seems to be a very small amount of known lore (in comparison with other worlds such as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc) is there a certain amount of openness with making thing up or making assumptions based upon what is known? And if so is there a place where this agreed upon information is based? For example in my other post we were discussing the possibility that the Circle of Knowledge might possibly be an academy of learning for AFTER you've learned everything from a guild. If enough people agreed that this is the case, then it would become part of "accepted" lore. Or is it more, here's the lore, this is how it is end of story type of thing. I'm sure there are people on both sides of the argument, but thoughts?

The speculation here being that the Circle of Knowing are all well capable with magic (watch the End of an Era video...), and their patron deity hints at the further pursuit of said knowledge. It seems like there may be more information there in regards to magic academia, but we don't have much more information than that. I had actually considered this as I was doing my research, but what I found about the Circle of Knowledge implies that they focused on the crystals (granted not familiar much with what the crystals are or do past teleportation). So it didn't seem much like the Circle of Knowledge would be about Magic research in other areas, but a strictly focused academic group. But those are just my thoughts.

    Lore help

Hi! I'm new to Final Fantasy 14, but some friends of mine are going to be playing the game and so I figured I'd give it a try too. I'm currently working on my character's backstory and I've run across a few questions so far. Keep in mine I come from SWTOR which has tons and tons of lore which is easily available. I've tried to do searches to answer my questions, and may just be looking in the wrong place, but I'm very OCD about having backstories fit correctly with the lore of the game. So on that note, the first two of probably dozens of questions that I will probably have. 1) Before the Garleans attacked Eorzea, where the lands at relative peace that would allow free trade and merchant travel etc across the borders? It may not have been like large amounts of such activity, but from what I gathered the original acts where kind of unexpected. 2) Was there an academy for higher studying of Magics? Think other games like Dragon Age with the Mages academy, or Elder Scrolls with a similar. Or like a graduate school where all the best mages go to study in order to research and share advanced techniques etc etc. Any help is very much appreciated, as nothing I've found has given any indications of either of these questions and as a history nut and I'm beginning to go a bit crazy that I can't find this stuff. Thanks all, Evie
