  1. @Lament Yeah, Ul'dah would work well because of that, and I have learned a lot about the refugees in Ul'dah via in-game questing, but I was thinking of having her been almost exclusively in Gridania prior to becoming an "adventurer". I prefer my characters to start with as little experience as possible and let them learn as they are played. Having been through all the cities growing up it'd make her seem... too worldly than I'd like. However, while I write this reply, my mind is working on an alternative history for her utilizing Ul'dah. @Siobhain Well I am a little unsure the distance between Ala Mhigo and the Black Shroud. I was thinking a small group of families would have walked from the mountains fleeing the Garlean Empire and settled on the fringes of the Black Shroud, where she'd be raised. It'd be a long, hard walk. Stories of people fleeing Tibet on foot and walking through the mountains into India comes to mind. Being refugees they'd not be accepted into Gridania. Not because Gridania is harsh, but there is only so much food and land available. I have also found through in-game questing that at least the elezen frown on the influx of outsiders. Being forced to live on the fringes, they'd be more vulnerable to Ixal who, in addition to raiding, also appreciate fancy dress parties, low-budget musical productions, and a good Sunday's roast. I find I need to have IC reasons for all her classes, and I doubt I am the exception on this site with that attitude, and being raised in the Black Shroud I could easily chalk up archery, fishing, cooking, botany, carpentry, and leather working to being a rugged survivalist. Disclaimer: I am still waking up with my morning coffee and it's 4:45 AM, so if this most is disjointed I apologize.
  2. Yeah, and I think people understand it wasn't meant as a serious rebuttal.
  3. I got nothing. I did have a scene sketched out in my head of a motley crew of Britsh Ixal trying to organise a village they were sacking into slave groups while en route to a low budget community musical, but in the end it really wasn't that humorous. So lets just let the well dressed Ixal dance themselves off stage to Al Jolson's "Mammy" while I continue to ponder the early life history of my forming character.
  4. That's fine, that's "IC" IRL. The problem is they find out OOCly, not ICly, that it won't work in the end, and then make their character suddenly not have feelings or what have you. That's metagaming. I don't like it. I'm going to preface this by saying I don't think this is what you are implying, but there are enough new RPers on this forum that I think this needs to be said: No one should ever, ever, ever feel that they must RP out something they are not comfortable with OOC simply out of a duty to be "true to their characters" or to "avoid metagaming." Ever. LiadansWhisper needs to be quoted here, because no matter your opinion on the matter, you cannot argue with the truth she speaks. Now, as a humorous interlude, allow me to share where my mind went while reading through this thread. “Hark thee maiden over yonder, for I, Biff the Understudy of the West, have watched you from afar for a fortnight past. Thy eyes glow like beautiful aetheryte, and your buxom bosom like two magitek airships - forever defying gravity; I express unto thee my love which, until now, I have kept afar! Do unto me thy honour and I beseech thee to address my proclamation of love!” “Please sir, I hardly know thee, take thine ‘proclamations’ else where, I do believe there is a pay-by-the-hour Miqo’te down the street!” “Ah, you do not take my advances seriously, and how could you? For one as beautiful as you must receive many suitors thrusting their desires upon you every hour! I shall pine for you, and prove to thee that I am worthy of thine love! As a testimate for how furious my loins doth burn, I shall catch 1000 dusky gobies for thee!” “Please, annoying sir, take your love and your gobies and begone! Perhaps an elezen dancing atop a fixed interpersonal missive receptacle to soothe thy burning loins?” ((OOCly, just want to let you know my character, Elizabeth von Starmole, is not looking for romantic RP nor am I interested in participating in romantic RP storylines.)) ((Ah, OK, sorry about that! Hope I didn’t make you feel uncomfortable. )) “Your rejections are cruel, fair maiden, and so I shall thrust myself into the hottest sands of the dessert to wander much like Sir David Carradine, hoping that by righting enough wrongs and bringing justice to the outlands, I shall quench this burning love that goeth unrequited.” ((Um... Did you just metagame your character’s feelings away? I thought he was in love with my character?)) ((Oh, well, yeah. I am looking for a romantic storyline and I thought you said you weren’t interested, so I didn’t want to bother you any more.)) ((That’s metagaming. Your character is in love with mine, so he needs to pine for her. Pine like Chris commanding the Enterprise for the first time! Pine like the rainforests of British Columbia! What I am seeing isn’t even worthy of the pining done by the $0.99 car air fresheners one finds on that neglected rack shared with the dust covered packets of Yojimbo’s Sweet n’ Spicy Crab-flavoured beef jerky at the back of a truck stop on a logging highway in northern Ontario!)) ((... ... Well, I guess I’m levelling Fisher.))
  5. Category A: You, OOCLY 1. Are there any any races you particularly love the opposite (or same) gender of? The models, the history, the lore, anything. The race-genders I like the most would be, in no particular order, Miqo'te (males and females), Highlander Hyur (males and females), Midlander Hyur females, Elezen females, and Roegayden females but not all of them. Some Roe females look terrible, some look unbelievably hot, such as Merlwyb who I think I fell in love with once I got to see her in a cut scene. I even wanted to make a female Roe but had trouble getting her to look how I envisioned her so I gave up and went Highlander. I don't care much for Midlander Hyur men, they're too... I don't know, androdgynous is not the right word. Just, more and more these days the ideal male is turning into this pale, skinny, flacid creature. My ideal male image is big and bearded. As for Lalafell, they are adorable! But, you know, moe. I would probably be killed in Eorzea if I were to really visit it. Die at the hands of an angry Lalafell. Everytime I have a quest involving one of those matcho evil Lalafell gangsters in Ul'dah, my only reply would be to pinch his cheeks and call him cute. Kind of like in "Elf", where Will Farrel's character addresses the "angry elf". As for male elezen, most of them just look like tossers to me. Something about their aesthetics. 2. How do you view interracial couples in -game-? Specifically, let's not get into a debate about whether or not it's 'gross' to you as a person or if there are too many people doing it. The only time I'd ever give pause to interacial couples in-game is if I saw a Roe or Highlander with a Lalafell, and then then it'd be nothing more than pondering the mechanics. 3. Do your OOC feelings towards a particular race make you more open or affect what your character is looking for when they're either flirting around, pursuing romance, or just, in general, acting differently towards those individuals. Yes, and I would question the sincerity of anyone who'd say different. You're character isn't really a person. However, your character seems real because they are gifted with the semblence of life. The source of that semblence is bestowed to the character by its creator. What makes your character tick is really a part of you. So anything my character feels or thinks is really something I think or feel on some level. Category B: Your character 1. Does your character seek friends or partners based predominantly on race? No, but for Crim she'd favour fellow Highlanders due to the fall of Ala Mhigo. As for A'nari, I think she'd shy away from male Miqo'te due to the Sun Seeker social hierarchy. I will admit this is kind of my fault, as I made her before I had a real chance to read up on their racial lore, but she is a firebrand through-and-through and won't participate in one of those harems. She'll die alone before being a part of something like that. Now, I just need to think of a good reason why she's that way. I could definately see A'nari falling for a Highlander or Roe. As an aside to A'nari, I don't like some of the facial expressions she has when being addressed by Thancrid in the cutscenes. I understand he's supposed to be some sort of Ladies' man, and he's got all the stereotypical hot protagonist cliche aesthtics sported by anime characters, but he seems like an utter ponce. 2. How does your character view interracial pairings and are their feelings different from your own? I don't think they'd vary much from mine OOC, largely because my characters aren't bigots. As they have more time to experience the world, as these characters are in their infancy, that might change.
  6. I'd be keen on the bazaar, but having rerolled on Gilg I am starting over and I doubt my crafting will be at a worth while level by the time this happens, but eventually I could see Crim as a vendor. On a side note, I hosted a fishing derby on WRA for over a year that was very popular, with prizes and a new location each week. I would even consider hosting something like that myself, but not yet. Still trying to get myself fully immersed into the world.
  7. I'd be interested in attending, and Saturday afternoon (EST) would work for me time wise. Thanks for organising this!
  8. Using WoW as an example, go check out the various WoW focused forums and ask how much everyone loved Trial of the Crusader. Man, no trash WHATSOEVER! An entire raid of nothing but bosses! Must be the best raid ever conceived, right? Oddly, for some reason, people seem to hate it more than any other one and Ulduar, chock full of a LOT of trash, gets praised as a fantastic, glorious raid. Some will argue the boss encounters are the reason, but nobody complains about trash in Ulduar. Without "trash mobs" people would get bored with the bosses as well. Bottom line, Square can't develop a game for the few who want nothing to do with 90% of the game and want 10% of it to fill hours upon hours of their time. It just doesn't work. I'm glad to see how they're reacting. My goal is to run story dungeons with friends & RPers and at 50 hopefully I'll be mostly playing with real/in game friends for dungeons and raids rather than strangers. ToC was a loot pinata, a boring one. Ulduar didn't really have that much trash compared to ZG or MC. Ulduar and ICC had the perfect ammount of trash, IMHO. Enough to add flavour and interest, without being a series of tedious pulls. However, with that said, ZG and its crazy ammount of trash really gave me the feeling that I was actualy invading a real, fully populated city. That was cool. It just got tiresome after awhile. Plus Ulduar had fun mechanics, especially the opening seige.
  9. I have only RP'd romance once before. It occurred between two troll characters in WoW. We'd RP'd together for nearly a year before the relationship developed, and it happened quite organically. There was never any drama, and since both of us were attached OOC and had diametrically opposing gender/sexual orientations an OOC relationship wasn't even possible. We also never publically displayed affection, since she was a GM and I a guild officer, we thought IC (and OCC) it'd not be professional. It was a great experience and we'd played those characters together for years. As for ERP, we started out with "fade to black" but over time we became more comfortable and started RPing out more. Of course, it was done very privately. It'd be far to scandalous in our minds to ever have anyone know. Mind you, we played on WRA, where everyone's main was also their f-alt. Of all the WoW RP servers I played on, WRA seemed like a hotbed for ERP. I know Moonguard has its ERP-shire reputation, but on WRA it wasn't Goldshire and level 1s, it was max level characters and only vaguely hidden. I think romance, and ERP even, can be fun and great but it really has to be conducted well by the players. I recall from my years as a teen, people commonly alienated friends for the harmone driven novelty of new boyfriends and girlfriends, I am probably guilty of that too, but now as an adult I just don't see that anymore. Even with friends who get into new relationships, they don't suck face at the dinner table/bar/wherever while we all watch. I mean, could you imagine? You and your colleagues are out for dinner to celebrate someone's promotion and two 30-somethings are sucking face while the sommelier uncorks the wine? Bob One: "Grats on the promo, Dave!" Matt & Mindy: *slurp, slurp, slurp* Bob Two: "Yeah, way to go!" Matt & Mindy: *slurp, slurp, sluuuuuuuuuruuuuuuuuuuupppppppppp* Dave: "Ah, thanks guys! Um... I think Mindy just got pregnant."
  10. I agree with Koyu, the Adventurers' Guilds are very busy with crafters and the like. There are some awesome spots in the low-level sections of all three starting areas that could be used, such as little villages or outposts. Another option would be to pick a more out-of-the-way spot in one of the cities. With a designated "hot spot", one could wander in IC at any time and just check out who's there and what not, as opposed to just drifting through the world hoping to bump into someone.
  11. Greetings fellow WoW ex-pat, cat owner, and outdoor lover! If I ever see you hoppingaround in a miss matched clothing set I'll have my Highland lancer, Crimmera Vahn, give you a poke - preferably not with the pointy end.
  12. You just gotta try in the morning. I got onto Gilgamesh by logging in around 05:00 EST, which is my usual play time. I can also relate about MMO hopping, but I stuck with WoW for years until Activision chased all my friends away. Then the Pokemon RPers came. @________@
  13. Or a french press and kettle. Or just a percolator. I don't see percolators anymore, what happened to those? Die out with the 80s? Personally I use a french press, the coffee tastes better. I even take it backpacking with me. Wait... was this thread about RP or coffee? Eitherway, I am going to go get some coffee.
  14. I second Ermina. I typically only play early mornings (EST), and since the maintainence a couple weeks ago I have had no issues rolling on Gilgamesh (or Balmung if I had chose to) or logging in. However, in the evenings when I do get to play I sometimes get a queue for Behemoth but not Gilgamesh.
  15. Superbly outlandish, you say? As in the ixal were perhaps all dressed for a fancy dress party with bowties, pocket watches, and monocles?
