What do you want to see added to the game in the future?
Aeslyn Grey replied to Dravus's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Speech bubbles for when players use /say, and a last logged in feature to make management of Free Companies and Linkshells easier as well as all of the above. -
Sorry you are having this problem. Regarding the cost of calling - I use Google Voice to make international calls from my cell phone and it costs 2 cents per min to call the UK from the US. I have also used it to make calls to Korea last year and I think that was the same rate. Once you have signed up for the voice service and downloaded the app to your phone you load some dollars onto the account which will sit there as credit if you don't use it all up. It's a hassle you shouldn't have to go though, but once it is set up you will have easy access to cheap international calls, and will know exactly how much it is costing you. Hope it gets sorted out soon, good luck.

Opinions on the V.O. for This Game
Aeslyn Grey replied to Tobias Nightbringer's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I don't like most of the voice acting in this game. It sounds like American actors trying to do an English accent to me. I haven't looked them all up, but I know Thancred at least is an American voice actor. -
Mongoose have your tried the Guildhests? The are little mini instances that you access through the duty finder, it will put you in a party and they are very short, about 5 mins long. You could do them over and over to practice until you feel ready to do the first dungeon.

Hi there, welcome! My main is on Gilgamesh at the moment but I have a little alt on Balmung too. I haven't decided which server I will make my permanent home yet, and server transfers start soon, so maybe I will see you in game. Have fun!

I have read this thread with interest as a person who, whilst having some prior RP experience, still considers herself to be in a learning stage. I think we never stop improving and honing our skills. I would appreciate roleplaying with someone who has Theodric's approach to helping people. What I don't like is if I go away from an RP wondering if I made bloopers that no one was comfortable telling me about, or if I was just boring and no one thought it was their place to give me suggestions for new ideas. Of course I don't expect everyone to help me, but I would be more than happy to RP with people who sent me the occasional /tell to say (you might want to try doing that this way) or who would meet up with me afterwards to give me suggestions. I might not agree with everything they suggest, but I would add the knowledge to my mental list of things to consider when thinking about how people interpret my style. As long as it is done with kindness, discretion and with a genuine wish to help, and not to feed their own ego, then I would welcome that approach very much. I hesitated as to whether to contribute to this discussion, because the atmosphere in here has turned hostile. It was a good discussion that I found interesting, but it makes me sad to see someone be singled out in the manner that happened here. I'd like to see this discussion stay on topic, and have an atmosphere where everyone feels safe to express their opinion and stay constructive.

Above it was mentioned that FFXIV is for 16 and over. I was curious because I thought it was 13 and over. Looking it up it seems to be that the UK rating is PEGI 16, and the US is ESRB Teen 13, someone correct me if this isn't right. Sorry if this is a little off topic, I was just interested and was surprised at the difference in ratings. Personally I don't get offended when people swear in chat, it isn't part of my normal vocab to do it in everyday speaking in RL, so I don't tend to use it in game chat, but it doesn't bother me when others do. There are some words I would be offended by, and some people just haven't learned to use their 'filter' as to what is appropriate, but I would just ignore it. I probably wouldn't choose to be close friends with someone who swears in every other sentence though because it would just irritate me eventually. What I find much more irritating is baby talk and really silly snuggle bunny talk, but again, I just ignore it.

Eorzean Words and English Counterparts
Aeslyn Grey replied to BlessedSilence's topic in FFXIV Discussion
The term 'anyroad' is a common dialect word in northern England, whereas 'popotoes' as far as I know is just a made up word. Anyroad is a word that is used really really often where I am from in Yorkshire. A person might say something like "Oh the slugs are eating my lettuce again, I am sick of it of it! Anyroad, enough of my complaining, what are you doing today?" It is often used to follow a statement that was somewhat negative in an attempt to lighten or change the mood. -
I would love to participate in one of these, I hope someone starts one. I don't have any knowledge, or experience of DMing, and I wouldn't want to lead one, but I will look out for if any start up that I could join as a participant.

I think this depends upon the circumstance. In a RL situation, such as standing in line, you very often get random strangers chatting. That is true of all the countries I have lived in and visited including the UK, Spain, The Netherlands, Belgium, the US and ... well no not so much in Germany, but that is a whole other conversation. Bar settings are easy, people often just get chatting to each other, but the same can't really be said of tables in restaurants. In most places there is a sort of territorial 'circle of space' that people expect will usually be respected around them when sat at a table in a restaurant. Therefore, we need to employ ways to get around that if we want our RP encounter to feel realistic. There are several I can think of, such as if there are no empty tables, it would be normal to approach and ask if the seat is free and would they mind if you joined them (this can work in a cafe, bar and most eating places that are not formal restaurants), but what if there are empty tables? and what if it is a formal type restaurant setting? Well what I might do is go sit alone at the empty table next to them and hope that something comes up in the conversation at the table beside me that gives me a reason to talk to them. I was a restaurant in Chicago once and heard a woman talking on the next table who had a Yorkshire accent, which is where I am from, I couldn't help go over and start chatting to her. She and her husband moved to our table to join us. It is a shame we can't use accents as the excuse in game, maybe someone could think of another way along similar lines. The most realistic would be if the people seated gave the new person and 'in' by saying something. I have had people in England, particularly middle aged and older ask me to join them when I was sat alone in a manner such as "Are you on your own dear? Come sit with us we have plenty of room here!" Does this happen often? No, but we have to work with what we have and I really understand both sides of this discussion. There isn't one ideal answer for all situations.

Aww c'mon guys can we drop the name discussion or take it to a thread of its own. The guy is fresh on the scene and doesn't need all this in his character directory thread. I suggest the EULA and naming policy should be discussed in another thread.

Characters: Aeslyn Grey Linkshells: Echo Knights, LFRP, Limitless Sky Primary RP linkshell: Echo Knights II.RP Style Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy): Probably medium. I like to stay within the lore as much as possible. I want my character to grow over time, but I am not always IC when playing the game. Views on RP combat and injuries: I have never role played combat, but I am open to learning how it would be done, and if it fits into a story we are playing then I have no problem with it. No permanent disfiguration or death on this character. Views on IC romance: Romance is not something my character is looking for (more on this when I write my character Wiki soon). A relationship would not fit with the vision I have for her, but she would probably be flattered and amused by any attempts to flirt with her, especially if light and humorous in nature. No ERP. Others role playing their romances is fine, but I have had experiences in the past where a couple will just want to sit and flirt, cuddle and whisper sweet nothings, which is cute for a few minutes maybe, but it isn’t as interesting for the onlookers. I would probably move along unless other people were present that I was also roleplaying with. Views on non-romantic RP (family ties, etc): All for it! This would really interest me.I am still working on the background details of Aeslyn's history so it wouldn't be difficult to work something out at the moment. My only problem with it would be that I can be a bit of a loner some days, so I might want to go off and craft alone with my own thoughts that day. However, this could be stated in character, and it will be a feature of Aeslyn’s personality too, so it need not be a problem. I would probably want to get to know you a little before agreeing to link our characters in a long term way, just to make sure our personalities and our style of RP meshed well. Views on lore: I am doing my best to learn about the lore, please be gentle with me if I mess up! I like to make things as believable as possible within the world that the characters are from. I am fine with people using back story to mold their character’s place in the world if they need to explain why it deviates from tradition. Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc): I am IC when using /say, OOC in /Shout, rarely use/Yell, in LS’s I am in or out of character depending on the type of link shell. In party it depends what we are doing. III. Other Info Country: I am British but currently living in the US Timezone: Central Contact info: Message me on this site or in game, either is ok.[glow=blue]~Special announcements can be found in the posts below~[/glow]

Those Taint guys, that is harassment. Use the report button that is what it is there for. Sorry that happened to you GM's are reading our reports even though they are probably swamped due to first month chaos an all that. I sent a report in a few days ago (about something completely different not role play harassment) I was contacted by a GM in game in /tells about it yesterday and had a conversation about it, was nice to see they are reading and acting on reports. Most stuff I ignore, I am often pretty oblivious to what is going on around me a lot of the time anyway, not always a good thing in dungeons

Transition PS-3 to Keyboard = Culture Shock
Aeslyn Grey replied to Mongoose's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Hi there, seeing as you said you are new to MMO's and that you don't know what a Tank is I would like to link a great and easy to understand explanation of what the 'Trinity' system is for you. However, when I looked for one everything was so detailed it would probably overload you. Maybe someone else will be able to link one soon. Basically the 'Tank' will lead the group, will typically be able to take a lot of damage, either through damage mitigation skills or high hp or both. The Tank will also have special skills to gain 'aggro' or enmity, hate, different games have different names for it, but it just means how much the enemy or enemies are focused on him/her rather than the other players in the group. So the Tank is the head of the 'Trinity' party and leads the group. This is a position that holds a lot of responsibility and can be quite difficult as the game gets harder. Then there is the healer, who will normally focus most of his/her time on keeping the tank alive, and then the other party members as needed. In FFXIV the party for dungeons at low levels is made up of 1 tank, 1 healer and 2 dps (dps means damage per second and refers to damage dealers who are not primarily healers or tanks but who are capable of dealing large amounts of damage quickly) When I was new to MMO games I did not know about the different the roles in the party, and I made lots of mistakes and it took a while for me to understand there was a structure that I could learn. If you read up on how the 'Trinity' party system works in MMO's that should help you a lot. Good luck!
