  1. There are actually multiple schools of thought pertaining to this topic. "Classical" beauty is actually objective; it is defined by mathematical proportions that were established in Greco-Roman art and revived multiple times by Western European cultures. There are specific ratios for the face as well as the body as a whole (which one could break down further). I won't get list the details here, unless someone asks for it, but good example of a person with a classically beautiful face is Scarlett Johansson; her face has a high degree of symmetry, and the ratios between: hairline/forehead/brow/eye/nose/mouth/chin (vertical) eye/nose/eye (horizontal) are all quite close to the "ideal". This is not to say that value only derives from numbers; rather, in this context, "beauty" is an objective concept, whereas "attractiveness" encompasses the subjective part. We might find the color of someone's eyes to be particularly alluring or compelling - that attribute just isn't a component of the classical formula. *It should also be noted that "classical" beauty also applies to architecture and artistic composition (the term "the golden ratio" originated within architectural theory. As far as RP goes, I consider a description of a character as "beautiful" to be more along the lines of "unhelpful" than anything else. If someone asked you to use the CC to create a "beautiful" Elezen alongside a "normal" Elezen, what differences would you make? Aside from shying away from some of the more obviously strange faces, I doubt most of us have any idea. In Eorzea, we are provided with little to no information as to what the different races and cultures perceive as (physically) beautiful. Aside from that sorta creepy "bodice assessor" Hyur in Limsa Lominsa. For all we know, Every Miqo'te without the fluffy tail may be considered super homely
  2. I've followed all the prerequisites currently listed on Square's World Transfer FAQ, so it should go smoothly unless they left something out. Still, thanks!
  3. Well that just sounds fantastical. I'm gonna go punch that button and hopefully manifest on Balmung in no time!
  4. Heya, I'm hoping to get a sense of how much time it takes for a World Transfer request to go through... I've seen 24-48 hours on another forum, but that post is over a year old. If I'm looking at several days, I'll probably hold off until Monday... you get the idea ^^ Thanks for any responses!
  5. I can't see any concrete steps one could take aside before (attempting) to get a sense of the number of RPers on the 5 worlds listed. If it turns out that any of them had a significant margin over the others, migration to that world would probably have the best results one could hope for.
  6. If you progressed into Ninja, you could use Katon for AOE cooking-implement attack! In all seriousness though, it sounds like a fun character. If it were me, I'd edge his personality/demeanor slightly towards "high-strung". It suits an ambitious chef who won't abide mediocrity when it comes to his craft, and would give you an excuse to whip out the culinary arsenal at inappropriate moments if he gets surprised or scared. Now that I think about it, I may have just described one of the NPCs from the CUL questline... but that guy was awesome, and one of the more memorable guild-understudies, so nothing wrong with borrowing if you like him.
  7. For my two gil, I would say either make the the lancer skills another part of her backstory (distinct in some way from her role as a shrine maiden) or incorporate them into her current narrative trajectory. It is true that the naginata was used by certain women in Japan in defensive and even military capacities, but the women who used them were somewhat different from the character you're describing: 1) Most of the female naginata-wielders were not warriors, but they would have been members of the warrior class/caste. Naginata may not have the same cultural significance as the set of samurai swords, but not just anyone would have them. They required a higher level of craftsmanship than other polearms (the construction process of the blade is no different from a katana), making them objects of value - part of a bride's dowry, even. 2) An onna bugeisha, the iconic naginata-wielding woman appearing in art or literature, was kinda on a different level from those who were simply trained in its use. This description of one Tomoe Gozen may have exaggerated some of her exploits (as so many legends do), but the perception of her as an emblematic "warrior woman" is not innaccurate: ...She was also a remarkably strong archer, and as a swords-woman she was a warrior worth a thousand, ready to confront a demon or a god, mounted or on foot. She handled unbroken horses with superb skill; she rode unscathed down perilous descents. Whenever a battle was imminent, Yoshinaka sent her out as his first captain, equipped with strong armor, an oversized sword, and a mighty bow; and she performed more deeds of valor than any of his other warriors. TLDR I think that with her current history/origin story, Ryoko would not be quite that martially inclined, but the bow, and even some hand-to-hand combat, would be very appropriate. However, that certainly doesn't preclude her from learning its use now, and spearing Garleans with it like meat on a miq'abob. Also, apologies if that was more about the naginata than you ever wished to know. It has so many interesting distinctions from other polearms; I always feel that if you're gonna use it, swing for the fences
  8. Feel like running into a Dotharl? It might be a strained connection, but still a connection! Ornlu isn't ashamed of his clan, but feels adrift in a world where the only way of life he's ever known, one of endless roaming and warring on the steppe, is gone... and it may never return. The Dotharl of the past cannot exist in Eorzea; what will become of them? Feel free to hit me up, I think Xaela/Xaela RP has so much potential! On Jenova now, but hopefully transferring to Balmung next week.
  9. Not sure if it's actually racist, or just size-ist... ... but my Dotharl Xaela once overheard someone in a tavern taunting their Lalafell friend a la: "best watch it around those big ones (Au Ra males), you're just small enough to eat..." Ornlu has no intentions of eating a Lalafell (or people in general) but found the concept amusing enough that he will sometimes address one as "morsel" or "crumb". Regrettably, I don't think there is a lore basis for "Falafel-l" =/
  10. I just started recently and am planning to transfer to Balmung this week, but I chose to place Ornlu among the Dotharl Xaela to hopefully make it easier for other Au Ra (or non Auri) to engage him with a hostile disposition. Ornlu probably won't be "evil" - more like "certainly NOT-wonderful" - but the ruin that the Dotharl leave behind them rarely keeps him up at night. He is also proud to have been named for a dragon; in his eyes, a most fearsome beast, and is delighted that this gets some people pretty riled up. Particularly those Ishgardians.
  11. I can't think of anything not-viable or conflicting in there. Typically, a governess would probably lean more towards "moderately educated" (at least within the British paradigm), being able to instruct her charges in more than one subject, possibly music/art too. She'd tend to fall closer to middle-class, whereas a nanny/caretaker would more likely have a low-class background, with more domestic skills and less education. Whether or not you want to get that detailed is purely a personal choice, I think! If it's just an origin story to shift into something else, it may not matter to you. The Raen are more or less the most mysterious of the playable sub-races for now, so you have plenty of leeway, you know?
  12. You can add Argada Dotharl to this list Looks we may have enough Dotharls for a rather intimidating warband hehe
  13. I would think that it may make more sense to use 'coeurl' rather than Miqo'te. Especially since you have the hard 'c' there so you still get the fun alliteration of things like 'Curiosity killed the coeurl.' True facts - I guess someone let the coeurl out of the bag. *Schrödinger's* Coeurl? Perhaps there's an npc name that would work for it, but I don't know off the top of my head.
  14. I think that usually, if you can pull it off ICly, people will leave you alone OOCly... and if anything compliment you on originality. Creativity is the foundation for any RP, ya know? "Pulling it off" is kinda vague, but I think of it along the lines of: 1) Know your story and keep it straight. Once you start contradicting yourself, someone will Law&Order your "tailed but not really" ass. Probably ICly. Consistency is key! 2) Anticipate and prepare yourself for the scrutiny you'll receive. It will help you to avoid falling into #1, and it keeps the RP from grinding to a halt while you cook up responses on the fly. 3) Consider the other person's perspective. Stonewalling someone's interrogation typically isn't that much fun, for either party (though there's a time and place for everything!). Luckily, you almost always have a few options. - Circular Logic: it's a special kind of disheartening when you realize someone has lead you on a wild chocobo chase back to their original point. And it tends to resonate with our RL selves. - Non-Logic: maybe "Hey guyz I'ma Black Mage now" has a few bats in his steepled hat. In his wild world, A+B=C D-B=C A/D = -(moogle)^2 Take the derivative and Voila! Black Mage. - Tactful Acknowledgement: Revel in the skepticism! If Femiqo'te "Nunh" is lying through her teeth about her heritage, for whatever reason, perhaps she could use /em to convey a sentiment that only other Miqo'te would pick up on. A certain tail twitch or ear angle could mean, *Oh, you know that I know that you know! But whatcha gonna do about it?* /em HissSpitMROWR etc.
  15. When I started roleplaying, I was surprised at the number of people I met that expressed unease at the prospect of roleplaying a character opposite to their RL gender. I can understand where the sentiment comes from, but the idea of "gender-bending" was foreign to me. If I have a concept, I choose the gender, race, class, etc. that seems like the best fit. No different than a character in book or a play! Incidentally, the biggest influence on my favorite RP character to date was Olivia Dunham from "Fringe" - whom I would place among the greatest female protagonists in SciFi, ever. It's so easy to forget that she's a character played by an actress, and not an actual person - pure magic.
  16. Sometimes it's fun! One of my favorite SWTOR memories is of leaving the neutral club/tavern and seeing a Sith guy and Jedi girl RPing a furious drunken makeout session in an alley. At the time, each faction had separate /say channel, so everything was happening in /em. After a few minutes, their respective groups of friends came running and started milling around the entrance, both alternating between expressing their dismay at this most unholy union, angrily blaming the other party for letting their friend get too wasted, and begging the duo, "PLEASE, _____, let's just GO HOME!!" It all felt much more realistic and human(oid) than the typical "stoic Jedi disdain" and "seething Sith hatred", you know?
  17. I'm currently envisioning my Dark Knight as... well meaning but emotionally volatile, let's say. So you won't be the ONLY one. Maybe we could have an RP event where all the angsty Dark Knights meet up at a tavern, brood over drinks, and then trash the place in an outburst of dark fury?
  18. ...It's interesting that warriors would be the ruling class in Raen hierarchy - maybe they aren't so different to Xaela after all. Here's a cool thread about what some of the random generator surnames mean, reflecting different professions. I think it seems a bit difficult to envision since the Raen are still mostly an unknown and possibly the Eorzean equivalent to leprechauns, but the samurai ran the show throughout multiple eras in Japan, in peacetime and during war. More than one tier, but all within a "warrior caste." You could more or less say the same for the Rajputs and Spartans too. And since the Mongols actually make an attempt to invade Japan, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a similar history between the Raen & Xaela. *On a side note, if you're interested in getting a glimpse of life with the Mongol Horde, both the film "Mongol" and the "Marco Polo" series (Netflix) are quite good!*
  19. Yes I've also been curious about the "solitary" nature of the Raen. I actually interpreted that statement to mean that the Raen live in small villages or settlements, ones that typically don't cross paths with others. I reached that conclusion because of this excerpt from the Au Ra Naming Conventions post: "The Xaela, being nomadic, live lives that are one part solitary (when traveling as a clan) and one part community (when they interact with other clans they come across in their migrations)." This seemed to indicate that "solitary", in the context of Au Ra, might be referring to the behavior of a subgroup, as opposed to an individual person. Additionally, this passage seems to indicate a fairly robust class/caste system... a social construct which would be rendered mostly meaningless without the existence of Raen communities: "Unlike their Auri ancestors who employed clan names as surnames, the now-clanless Raen have adopted a more complex practice. Families of the warrior class (and generally the ruling class) are the only people “allowed” surnames in Doma, and they will often take surnames that displayed their battle prowess or position within an army." "Though the names are not recognized by the ruling class, families of the merchant and peasant classes will still give themselves surnames as to make their everyday lives easier─the names reflecting their professions." I'm by no means certain of my interpretation, I just wanted to bounce it off others!

    Heya

I'm new to FFXIV - I almost started playing at the ARR launch, but RL got in the way... then I read/saw Heavensward and couldn't ignore it anymore. Looking forward to joining everyone on Balmung once I roll eight characters and pay for a server transfer MMORPG FFXI, EQ2, WoW, SWTOR, TERA, The Secret World, GW2, EVE RP XP SWTOR: Jedi military order; Imperial sniper and general trouble-maker TERA: Trade consortium muscle, Elven girl-next-door, political heckler GW2: Sylvari swordsman (swords-plant?) and unrepentant semi-vegetarian EVE: Former member of the Stillwater Corporation, a subsidiary of the Angel Cartel. Six-month deployment in Fua Constellation. Character Ideas/Info Miqo'te SotS - itinerant martial artist and culinarian Hyur - Garlean exile and Magitek Knight/Legionaire/____ More in the works! How did you learn about the coalition? Google What kind of a role-player are you aiming to be? Light, medium, or heavy? I'd like to aim for medium-RP... I do it for the extra dimensions it can add to the game and community, but I also have a deep-seated urge to tank things.
  21. Heya, So I'm just starting out with FFXIV post-Heavensward, and trying to decide which of the Au Ra subgroups to run with. (Not concerned enough with starting stats for that to be a determining factor.) I think the concepts of the Raen are promising enough, but at the moment, it feels like the Xaela have a great deal more to build upon, in an RP-sense. The sheer number of clans and the relationships between them create such an incredible backdrop, no? Aesthetically, I'm really digging the shiny-golden-Raen that I whipped up, and I am aware of the Xaela clan that accepts Raen outcasts... but that's hardly the most interesting tribe out there! Any thoughts, opinions, flames are much appreciated!
  22. I still play/plan-to-play EVE Online, though sometimes I get sick of it and need to take a few weeks off. It's a love/hate relationship.
  23. I would probably answer that question in the same fashion that Chris Rock responded to an interviewer's assertion that Dane Cook was "not funny." CR: "If you can make your audience laugh, you're funny. Simple as that." I really don't think you can make generalizations about something like wit, because the answer is almost solely determined by the individual.
  24. Actually, harder organic materials typically result in better sound conduction; that's how bone-conduction headsets work. Vibrations are carried along the cheekbone, bypassing the ear and stimulating the auditory nerves. This company makes some fun ones, if the tech interests you: http://www.aftershokz.com/pages/technology Incidentally, teeth also conduct sound very well, but mouth-phones aren't quite as commercially viable. At any rate, I think that Au Ra horns might not be all that different from those you'd find among the animal kingdom, which you would typically care for with certain oils or waxes.
  25. Heya! I'm very excited about ARR - I didn't play the original, but the tenacity and dedication that Yoshi P & team showed in redesigning XIV amazed me - and when they kicked the nostalgia factor up to 11 with Magitek, Moogles, and Helms of Light... I got hooked I participated in several of the closed betas as a Mi'qote, J'ira Tia, and met some really nice people, so I will be creating at least my first character on Balmung. However, I'm not opposed to rolling one on Gilgamesh as well. I've RP'd in several MMOs: SWTOR, Tera, and Guild Wars 2 for the most part. Currently I also play EVE:Online, which is great fun, though not so conducive to RP... tough to get involved with another character's story while constantly wondering if it's all an elaborate trap I have a few character ideas that I wouldn't mind batting around, so I'll throw most of that in a post in the RP threads tomorrow... but one of my favorite FF characters has always been Celes Chere - so maybe we'll find an Imperial expat who discovers talents she didn't know she had until her friends shove her onto a stage with a few hastily written cue cards... or "He", I'm always open minded! As for me, I'm 27, M, formerly an architect and soon to be who-knows-what. I love traveling the world, in-games and out, along with just about anything in the design field. See you soon!
