  1. Congratulations to you guys on getting your house!
  2. Yay, I'm glad you had a character already! That makes it easier considering the population size. But if you ever do want to switch servers, if you camp out patiently and check every set time (4am, 8am, 1pm, 6pm, 11pm) to see if the servers are full, you can probably get in where you'd like! It was a 4am window that worked for me for Balmung. And it's easy, too, because you can do it from the launcher ( News > "Regarding Character Creation Restrictions" ) and check to see if creation is open! Best of luck, and I hope you have fun!
  3. Oh geez, this, so much, with the muahahahaha baggage. It could be tough with warlocks and roleplay, considering that a lot of people liked to metagame knowledge of warlocks even if the character wasn't really into all the demonology stuff! I was really concerned when I saw the parallels at first, in case that sort of thing came up in-game, as I'm a lot more shaky with lore in FFXIV being new than I was in WoW, and it would have been easiest to avoid those connotations when I wasn't certain what to expect. This has helped clear things up so much. Besides, who doesn't want an adorable carbuncle? They were pretty much the cutest summons in FFVIII, and it seems like they've only gotten cuter! (I almost feel bad OOC making mine fight monsters, it looks like it could get eaten by the first beast to cross its path.)
  4. I'm completely brand-new myself, but I found that posting here had me already chatting OOC with some pretty nice people, and as soon as I found an event and began to RP, I ended up in a Free Company I've enjoyed thus far! So, like most people, my experiences are obviously only indicative to my own experience, but I'd say that there's definitely RP and RP opportunities out there! Heck, I got walk-up when I was OOC and levelling, something I haven't experienced since the first few weeks of an RP server opening on Warcraft, years back. Looking over the forums when I was trying to figure out which server to go with, it seems that there's personal differences for each experience on either Balmung or Gilgamesh, so I'd recommend trying each to see which server you prefer!
  5. Thank you guys for your responses! Unfortunately I haven't actually had a chance to delve much into the game outside of levelling to about level 12 so far, so my questions are probably a bit ignorant. (Though now I really want to see more of the quests even more than I had already wanted to ) Assuming I'm not going with the terrifying-sounding sort such as Ifrit, it sounds like the Carbuncle is a fairly common occurrence, then? That helps quite a bit, thank you. (And how did you know that I'd been thinking Warlock in WoW before? Haha, that's very much where my brain went at first, the more I read about the Primals.) Limsa Lominsia seems to be quite a long-standing location - when I did some poking around, there was a reference to a 77th Admiral in a quote, which implied to me that it's likely decades - if not centuries? - old, dependant on how long each Admiral holds office. The age of the Arcanist's Guild, however, wasn't something I could find. (Actually, it seemed kind of hard to find much info on that, outside of quest text here and there, but I might have been looking up the wrong stuff at the wrong locations.) My guess was that if someone had previously been a member of the Arcanist's Guild, or under their tutelage, that they would be able to pass on what they'd learned to a child or apprentice of sorts, as you'd described! So hopefully that's enough of a justification; her entire tribe was based around La Noscea with interaction and many visits to Limsa Lominsia, so I'd hoped that'd seemed reasonable. :cactuar:
  6. Usually I try to deal with IC issues through IC as well; it's a fairly large leap to assume that the player agrees with/condones their character's behaviour, just because characters are so diverse and most of us are quite far from the person we're portraying. That said, if you've had negative interactions with this person OOC (and analyze carefully if the attitude in text you got was perceived or genuine; sometimes we perceive a tone that isn't intended thanks to the beast that is human nature), if this person's IC and OOC behaviour makes you genuinely uncomfortable or unhappy as a roleplayer, then I'd just try not to engage them and put them on ignore. Hobbies should be fun, and if both parties don't enjoy interaction with each other, then what's the point, right? Kind of like some subject matter is just not stuff people want to roleplay with, sometimes it's best just to avoid rather than stress yourself out.
  7. Hi guys! I've been doing a bit of research (a whole bunch of googling, both on this site and others) and I'm wanting to make certain that I didn't overstep or miss things in working with Z'tajha the way I've laid things out! Better to make sure now than to get her too involved in story to undo mistakes. The way I've written her, she's family-taught and is only just starting to figure out how to use magic, much the way low-level characters tend to be in gameplay as well! I don't want her to become any sort of powerful spellcaster in the future, only to have her carbuncle and access to some of the more minor spells that Arcanists typically use. My concerns are: 1) Is nineteen a reasonable age for a character to be able to use these skills? I tend to err on the side of caution, if that helps any; she's very likely to fail or miscast/mess up her understanding of what she reads due to her inexperience. 2) Carbuncle is summoned via a crystal, from my understanding - how similar is this to primals, and how socially accepted is it? Is a carbuncle a kind of minor primal and how does that fiddle with lore? (And what sort of effects, if any, do they have upon the person summoning? 3) Does it make sense that this could be taught to someone outside of the Arcanist Guild, such as by family? I'd wanted to go with the notion that her mother taught her how to use her abilities. I've also wanted to leave open in years future for her to eventually have the choice (dependant on what happens in the land of RP and how those interactions change her views) to become a white mage sort, by giving her the "I can kind of use aether to heal a cut but I don't share that with anyone" sort of background. Her family made her aware of history ages-past regarding the abuse that the white mages were involved with and so I've been keeping that in mind, in that it might be viewed negatively and so it isn't anything she's delved into out of fear of repercussions for it. Does all of this seem okay, or are aspects of it sketchy/questionable/over the top? Any input would be great, and I'm really sorry if I've missed something obvious!
  8. HMM, that sounds like a very good policy, based on the wide variations in RP-land! Six-years-since seems the best way to go. I just wasn't certain if there was something that was generally agreed upon, and didn't want to step on any toes if references to timelines did come up. Thank you both a bunch!
  9. Hi there! I'm trying to get my brain wrapped around the (very rich) lore in the game, and I've found myself tripping over what is probably a very silly question/detail to be hung up on, but thought I'd ask anyhow! From what I've read, the Calamity with Bahamut happened in 1572 - after that, I see A Realm Reborn being referenced to as the new Era, 1577. Other discussions I read on the forum indicate that it'd be five years past the Calamity and thus into the 5th year of the 7th Umbral Era, or the 1st year of the 7th Astral Era with the advent of the game and returning of the Warriors of Light. I'm not 100% which way the community tends to lean - 1577, 5th year of the 7th Umbral Era, or 1st year of the 7th Astral Era? And on top of that, considering that there's been time since ARR was released, would it still be the same static date (5th year of the 7th Umbral/1st year of the 7th Astral Astral/1577) or has time advanced past that point in the world in a manner that's regarded by the RP community? IE: ARR was released August, 2013, so as summer approaches are we reaching year 2 of the 7th Astral/year 6 of the 7th Umbral/1578, or is the advancement of time predicated by specific game releases? Or am I completely out to lunch? *boggles* This might be kind of silly to obsess over, but I'm kind of anal retentive with little world-building details sometimes.
  10. I'm really sorry to double-post, but if anyone happens to poke their head in I have a silly question - I've been going through posts such as those in Xenedra's sticky, but haven't seen any about how the system works with combining emotes, sitting, say, tell, etc. I know that's really basic stuff, but it tends to be the stuff I trip over most easily as I'm learning different games.
  11. Ha ha, most of the original in the 80s was me staring in confusion over an uncle's arm asking about squiggly lines. Sadly, it wasn't until the last few years I got to try the original (and in English, yay!); I just knew watching him play something - even if I couldn't understand it at all - made me fall in love with videogames. They were just so much cooler than board games! ...oop, thank you! Obviously going to need to spend some time absorbed in the History Lessons and the other lore threads, and beat in Miqo'te and not Mithra and many other things like that before jumping in feet-first! And they really are, Zhavi! :3 They're just so fun looking, and even the little intricacies of their naming traditions make them stand out. Thank you guys for such a warm welcome and the replies and PMs. The community seems so active and full of such a wide variety of RP styles, too. It's going to be hard to pace myself and focus on levelling and exploring a bit first, rather than just running out to see all the RPers!
  12. I don't have much on the go right now; I'm waiting to get onto Balmung yet, but I'm working on the character I'd love to RP, if I can find people to nerd it up with. Some doodles of her, and a work-in-progress of my girlfriend's Norn from Guild Wars!
  13. Hullo everyone! I'm really new - both to the game and to the RP within it - but I've been an RPaholic on other MMOs throughout the years, as well as loving Final Fantasy since the late 80s. The lore and the story are all very new to me outside of the recurring themes in most FF settings, and I'm slowly chewing through the many references this site provides. Prior to this, I've been Guild Master of a couple of heavy-RP guilds in Warcraft, as well as taking part in RP on forums and Guild Wars 2. That said, while I'm definitely in the range of heavy-RP, I love to be more reactive/sideline characters and comic-relief at times. Hopefully I'm able to find my way around - the game is seriously just installing updates now, as I played about half an hour once at a friend's and loved it but never had a chance to get into it until now. Admittedly I'm really fond of the look of the Mithra, and I'll probably end up rolling one of those to start. I'd love to find a guild (linkshell?) and wrap my head around the lore in the future, and any suggestions as to where to look are always appreciated. Thank you for the community resource, and I hope to see you guys all in-game and make some connections in the future!
