  1. Such excitement! *bottles Prophetic's enthusiasm and makes an energy drink out of it* Kupo!!
  2. Everyone here is so helpful @Dogberry: your comment about there being a large magical realism crowd made me giddy! And your point about exposition pitfalls is well taken: not only have I been guilty of it myself, but I've been on the receiving end of it too. Pacing the reveal of ur story makes sense *nods* @faceman: so you have a good backstory, but then what are you? Couldn't have put it better myself! This, paired with @Isilme: Isil's point on motivations has helped bring to light one of my weaknesses; on those character sheets, I always struggle to fill in questions such as 'main goals' 'biggest fears' 'likes' and 'dislikes'. Coming up with who they are outside of their main backstory might help them integrate with a more diverse crowd; to help them in a wider range of conversations. Just like ogres and onions, my chars should have layers @Badlands: your bit on perception is still one I struggle with. Since ther is an obvious consensus that terms like good and bad are too broad (I fully understand in reality things exist in shades of grey) I shall say my characters are... well-intentioned. When they come across ppl they perceive as ill-intentioned, I don't know how to react. It is highly possible I am blurring OOC and IC here... not wanting to upset the person I am rping with, instead of my char acting negatively, they don't react at all. It is true I avoid conflict irl. I will need to get over that hurdle if I hope to proceed Also, nice to find someone who enjoys comic relief! No my chars generally are serious, but its nice to ease some of the many tensions from time to time. Thank you all very much for this! I'm learning lots *takes notes*
  3. Exceptionally well put Eva ^^ My goal of this thread is to find common ground amongst the various rp styles, not create divisiveness In learning others methods and reasons, I hope to better myself as an rper, so that I can interact with a more diverse group. Thanks for the contribution!
  4. If you would be so kind, dear fellow rpers, I was wondering if you might share with me your tips and tricks towards what makes for successful rp, and what makes a successful rp character. I have read Eva's excellent rp guide on this site, I have perused other useful threads, but oftentimes a direct engagement with peers gleams the best information. In particular, I have questions on the following situations: +How do you meet new people? By this, I mean what is the best way to rp with strangers outside of guild and friends? Oftentimes, I have arranged meetings with others, only to find we do not have any real reason to meet ICly.A central purpose for meeting would make for a stronger, easier rp session, yes? Or am I just overthinking things? + 'ordinary' vs. 'extraordinary': I tend to roll average joes. Any powers they may have are very much contained within the loreof both game and class they are. Magical realism, so to speak. It has been my experience, however, that a large contigent of people enjoy rolling naruto or dragon ball z type chars; these types of powers are quite foreign and alien to my chars, and I am often unsure how to react. I would like to open myself up to as much rp, and as many rpers as possible, so what are some ways to find common ground here? + 'evil' vs. 'good': very much in the same vein as above; i tend to roll good chars, and often find myself feeling as though i am surrounded by assassins, soul-scarred mercs, or flat out psychotic people. Again, i enjoy magical realism, so to me, this is like going to the quick-mart, and the guy behind the counter revealing to me he's been hired to assassinate Betty from the hair salon next door, who's actually seeking revenge on the traffic cop for waving a car through that hit her dog two years ago. I.... wouldn't know how to react. How do I adjust my char. To better facilitate interactions w/ shadowy types? + serious vs comedic: drama is good. Too much drama becomes suffocating and overwhelming to me, leaving me gasping for some comedic relief. In short (and tl;dr) is standard rp expectancy that you simply find like minded rpers, or are there mistakes I am making/ ways I can refine my approach to access more rp? Please do not limit your advice for a novice to the above only. I thank you for your time, and eagerly await your suggestions
  5. If I had to put money on it, in the gap between Phase 4 and the release, the only other time I could see would be between 3 and 4, but I don't think they'd put up the pre-order bonus between test phases. Lure in the people who haven't had the chance to experience it with the 4th phase beta, reap the pre-orders and then reward them the week previous to release? I'd think the weekend before plus a couple days, they seem to favor the weekends for the Beta (and rightly so), I would guess that they'd continue with that pattern. Too far awaaaaay ;_; I need a new rp scene
  6. I wonder when early access for preorders will start...
  7. I'm actually leaning towards maining a playwright, so this sounds like a pretty snazzy fit ^^ the idea of putting on plays and shows is a good one! Hopefully i'll catch up with you when i finally get in the game!

Why does the Mayor of townsville look like Bubbles? Ah well, welcome to RPC ^^
  9. Caysen, I just sent you one helluva long tl;dr in regards to my initial idea. Please critique however you like, I'm tough-skinned anyone else who wishes to see my helluva long tl;dr, just message me, and I'll send it to you! Nee, I love RPing with fresh faces and people who are trying to get the knack of RP! So I hope to catch you in game, and participate in coming up with a Linkshell that will interest others!
  10. That sounds like a lot of fun Omg... chrono cross is my fav game of all time love that siggy
  11. Great! We can bounce back and forth some ideas and we'll see if any of them stick
  12. You know, in the interest of making friends... it would be cool if several of us mentors and mentees met up in game as an OOC meet n greet, maybe get some lore questions answered, and have a few practice rp dry runs. Who knows, maybe we could even create a mentor based LS to kind of organize this happy little project
  13. Thanks for the positive feedback both This would not be my first go running such a thing, but would only bemy second time doing so with rp as the focal point. My first foray was initially quite successful, but several mistakes (first and foremost a lack of organization) plus a wall of RL poaching several members left me trying to run things all by my lonesome, which a successful project does not make. Perhaps a LS would be more appropriate, as it would open things up to those not wishing to submit to a free company. Are either of you two interested in helping set up the guidelines of a story?
  14. Thiiiis... so much this! I rarely even get to endgame content, because to me, a game should be about getting there. Maybe that's just my years as a console gamer speaking up. Anyway, sorry to derail, back to our originally scheduled debate!

    Hello!

On an unrelated note, when I played FF7, I named ur avie char. Cid Eup (pronounced cid up) Cuz i'm cool like that... yea... Anyway, welcome!!!
  16. I move that this thread get officialized abd stickified
  17. Well I'm gonna be the bestestier, which I shall prove with my multi-character, rp'd danceoff!
  18. Quite honestly, I think Gerik's post/idea on mentors could go a long way to dissolve this issue. And I fourthed (fifthed?) Avoiding labels and generaluzations. There are misunderstsndings on both sides of any argument, and the way to work through them is through shared respect.
  19. Ooo, ooo, I can kidnap help you! Then Consider me officially kidnapp- er... helped!
  20. Well, I won't be in-game til official launch in August, but I'll happily pair up with anyone willing to assist me. I love community ideas like this
  21. Darnit Lanos, you've swayed me The new server should appoint a RPC mod to help assemble and represent them.
  22. This is awesome I've run RP classes in other games, so I would be happy to be mentored and then become a mentor!
  23. ^Title Gauging interest in discussing ( and then perhaps formulating) a free company or at the very least a linkshell, once ARR hits the market, that would incorporate the following; - noob friendly (extremely) -stays small - emphasizes open world and adventure quest rp over tavern. - preferably leans towards good aligned - an application and rp interview process to screen out the right candidates - a 'buddy' system in which new recruits are paired with an established member to train into our story ruse. For instance; if we are an adventurer's group, new recruits get trained on what it is we do and what's expected of them, thereby bringing them into the story right away. - emphasis on running events in such a manner that everyone has a chance for their story to be told, and to feel included (which is why small would work) - Alt friendly - Relaxed attendance requirements (no one should feel punished for choosing real life over a game) we accept people off their attitudes and rp interest/skill, not for the amount of hours they are able to throw into the game. Obviously, since I would be brand new to the game, I would not have to be the free company leader. I'm looking for 5-6 individuals of like mind to discuss and come up with the details, at which point we coyld vote the best candidate to lead the group. Hope to generate some interest!
  24. Sadly, I don't think this is a server issue, its a people issue. The grass may appear greener on the other side, but I am relatively certain it is not. 75% of people can break into new situations with ease; whether it be associating with legacy members, a new guild they've joined, or even forming friendships with their fellow new gamers. 25% of us ( which I am a part of) struggle because we like to be 'shown the ropes'. Just as the 75% struggle to understand why we can't just 'dive right in', we find it hard to see why people aren't more cordial and welcoming. In PvE, I have found a few very noob- friendly guilds. I have never found this with RP. You join a guild. You get a tepid to warm chorus of welcomes. Everything is great OOCly, but ICly, no one has taken the time to welcome you to the fold, to introduce you to the guild's story, to give you some material to work with, for your character to find their groove. The onus is completely on you to do so, or you are told to read the forums. Well, forums work great OOCly, but still no one has taken the time to make you feel included ICly. Since we are in the minority, the majority see no problem. So what's the solution? Well, either get lucky and find a very friendly RPmate to help bring you along, or form your own guild specifically designed to help and include the 25%. But you DO NOT need a new server to do that. Eventually, that server will fall into all the old patterns and problems. It is quite fine to seek an alternative server, but it certainly will not fix the perceived problem. People simply form cliques. You have to work to feel included, and even then, its not guaranteed to pay off. This is why I usually start my own guild; to try and formulate an atmosphere where all will feel included, where all will feel at home. But to expect to spread that across an entire server is a little unreasonable, imo. Frustrating? Yes. But you do what you can to stay the course, and carve out your own little realm of happiness. Those who seek another server should be responsible for representing themselves on the RPC, since the RPC's purpose is to represent the majority of the RP community, not its entirety. Or, the alternate server could set up a sister site linked to the RPC. Just my two cents.
  25. On my old game Tera, I somehow ended up in a two part play put on for an audience. My character had exactly zero acting chops,so I rpceptioned her being herself, while struggling to also be the character she was portraying. It was absolutely one of the best times I have ever had rping. I would so be up for this if I end up in the world of Hydaelyn.
