Why do our characters close their eyes while casting spells?
Silfur replied to Rosanna Foxfire's topic in Lore Discussion
Boring non-lore answer. The whole thing with the eyes and magic most probably is a reference to Odin (the Norse god, not his namesake in game). Odin, a practitioner of seiðr (magic in Old Norse society) among other things, sacrificed one his eyes for wisdom/perception. *Throws a link* http://norse-mythology.org/tales/why-odin-is-one-eyed/ Also a theme we see in HW with the dragons. -
Ah, thank you! I knew I had seen that you had written about it somewhere! I just found the part about the Goetia Attire in the lore book and realized that I really need to start putting page markers in. orz My character spent time training as an Arcanist before studying Thaumaturgy and then eventually turning to the 'dark side' so it'd make sense that he knows how to draw geometries. It's a shame that they don't actually show the patterns and such. I think they'd actually look really cool considering that Black Mages have a limited selection of cool looking gear.
-
I've decided to ask this here because I don't think it's worth making a completely new thread just for this. orz One of Sounsyy's posts mentions that runes and patterns can be woven/drawn into clothing to enhance/protect the user from the magic that they are casting, if I remember correctly. I'm currently commissioning someone for a drawing of my character and I wanted to include the symbols he has drawn into the inside of his own clothing to protect himself and I was wondering if there are any in-game examples (images) that I could base them off of.

Heroes of justice and cold-hearted crooks!
Silfur replied to Strawberrycake's topic in Chronicled Connections
Hi, I don't know if you're interested in RPing with individual characters or if you're only looking for group RP but I think Mikh'a and Kiht'to could have an interesting dynamic. They both seem to have a few things in common, such as; being Keepers, living in Limsa, piracy and money problems. There is a possibility that they could have worked a job together at some point. Personality-wise they seem the total opposite of each other (Kiht'to is very much stuck in the past and much of what he has done recently is just 'going through the motions'.) and I'm certain they would most likely clash but I'm guessing it could be quite fun to RP. If you're interested I have some notes on Kiht'to in a Google doc here. -
He huffed, there was no way he was going to be stupid enough as to give any random stranger his name. There was a price on his head and a fairly decent sum at that. He contemplated remaining steadfast in his refusal to part with any personal information but she had been nothing but courteous and he was starting to feel a tinge of guilt. He was going to have to come up with something. “It’s Nebih’a...” he lied, not quick enough to think of a surname.
-
Kiht’to flinched and furrowed his brow. “My name, huh?” He surveyed his surroundings anxiously, swiveling his ears in every direction in an attempt to glean anything suspect from the bustle and commotion of the city around them. It was too dangerous to be giving out that information around here, anybody could be lurking nearby. Hells, he was the one lurking nearby not a minute or two ago. His expression softened when his eyes fell back upon the woman’s smile. “Why don’t you tell me yours first?”
-
“Wait,” Kiht’to began to extend a hand towards her, hoping to stop her from leaving but thought better of it. He let his arm drop back to his side. He was no longer interested in the coin purse, his hunger forgotten. He hadn’t had much contact with other Keepers or even his family since he had left the Shroud over ten years ago. Maybe this was a chance to rebuild the old bridges he had burnt. He mused for a moment and slipped his arm out of his coat to reveal an open knife wound on his shoulder, wincing as the rough fabric became unstuck from his skin. It wasn’t healing well on it’s own and he was sure it would become infected if he left it any longer. “Can you heal this?”
-
“You could say that,” the smile fell off of Kiht’to’s lips as he watched the purse disappear into her robe. His stomach rumbled again as if in protest. If he was going to eat tonight he’d need to force the matter. He weighed his options, of which he figured he had two: take the purse by force there and then, the riskiest and frankly most stupid plan, or try to lure her away from the eye of the public. He knew Limsa like the back of his hand, there were plenty of dark and less frequented places to take her. Maybe he could lead her down a stairwell or perhaps the blind spot on the decks outside the Wench. Or maybe he could... He felt the weight of the staff strapped to his back and instantly brushed that thought aside. “Are...” He began, looking straight into her eyes. He hesitated. Another Keeper? They were rare in these parts. What was she doing here seemingly all by herself? He frowned, “...you alone?”
-
Kiht’to yawned and stretched. After several hours out on the streets, people-watching was starting to bore him. His stomach growled and he sighed, anybody would think that with the amount of people out and about on a warm, sunny day like this he would at least have a few gil to his name by now but the people of Limsa Lominsa kept their belongings close to their person. He slid his hands back into his pockets and propped himself back against the stone wall behind him, catching the steely look of suspicion from a passing Maelstrom officer. He smiled and waved to the officer, who, flustered, immediately averted their gaze. He smirked, sure that the man probably had some passing recollection of him but ultimately couldn’t place him, it had been a long while since he had last been in Limsa. He yawned again, eyes heavy, the sounds of the city slowly being muffled out by the pleasantly warm sea breeze. Oh? Kiht’to’s ears perked up at the unmistakable sound of coins rattling against each other. A coin purse he deduced and a rather full one at that. Now alert, he began to scan the immediate area, eventually glimpsing the back of a young Miqo’te girl with deep purple hair heading in the direction the Drowning Wench, bouncing what seemed to be a small bag up and down in her hand. He pushed away from the wall and sauntered towards her, eyes fixed on the purse. “Hey there,” he smiled, fangs showing.

balmung Looking for people/group to RP with.
Silfur replied to Silfur's topic in Chronicled Connections
I've read Muijh's wiki page and it would love to have a go at RPing with you but I feel like Kiht'to would very much be one to take advantage of her kindness... D: Thanks! I've read through Kasi's profile and she sounds like the sort of person that Kiht'to would definitely associate with although I have a feeling that he would totally try to push all her buttons (and his luck). The Mischief's Coven sounds perfect. I'm in an FC currently anyway so I'm glad that there is a chance to participate without having to join. -

Thank you for your replies, I will take a look! I'll look out for what you end up with. -
Hi, I’m a noob when it comes to RP and I’m looking for people to kindly put up with me whilst I figure things out. I occasionally do a small amount with my FC but I really want to do more and I’m kinda lacking in the social skills to just walk up to someone in-game and ask to RP. I’m also not the quickest at typing because of dyslexia, so forum RP would probably be better for me to start out with. My character is not the most, err… agreeable of characters so here is some info about him for people to glance over. (I’ll get round to writing an actual wiki page for him, I swear.) Kiht’to Moshroca. Miqo’te - Keeper. 28. Kiht’to can be a bit of a douchebag (an understatement). He is conceited and self-serving but he’s at the point in his life where he has achieved maximum douchiness and is slowly starting to realize that his life hasn’t gotten any better for it. He’s spent the last year of his life avoiding Ul’dah like the plague, lest he be skinned alive. He’s in a lot of debt (gambling etc.) and has scammed and pissed off the wrong people. He’s a Black Mage pretending he’s just a humble Thaumaturge. Long story short, he acquired his soulstone after looting a bunch of ruins and decided to keep it after finding out what it is used for rather than sell it. Because having the power to destroy your enemies without destroying yourself is an optimal position to be in. Basically the further along he gets in life, the bigger the hole he keeps digging for himself gets. Underneath it all he is a somewhat decent guy… If you can believe that. (He has some morals. I don’t think I can actually RP a truly bad person. //orz) There is so much more to him but I don’t want this post to end up tl;dr.

Purple cat pisses everyone off. ...On second thought, that's a perfect description.

Thank you for all the useful information! I have a feeling that coming up with a realistic explanation of how he scammed his way into the Platinum Mirage is going to be a bit difficult since it's such an exclusive place. It's a possibility that he managed to get in due to his connections with a particularly affluent criminal group in Limsa. This also could tie in with why he moved to Ul'dah in the first place. To add to this he could have managed to amass a fortune during his time pirating and proceeded to gamble (and drink and screw...) it all away because he's an idiot, lol. Being involved with the Alacran and the drug trade also seems quite a solid idea. They'd probably be willing to take him on with no questions asked as long as he's willing to do their dirty work. Whilst working for them he could have been pocketing some money for himself until they started noticing and he had to hightail it out of Ul'dah.

I'm attempting to get into RP again with a different character and to be honest this time is going much more smoothly and I'm having more fun creating a background for him. Could I get some help with sorting out some details of my character's backstory? Maybe people could tell me if something doesn't sound quite right. I don’t know if any of this is written coherently enough, I’m really tired. orz One of the main motivations for what my character, Kiht'to, does is gil. At first people might assume that he is just greedy and is sitting on a pile of gil but in reality he is in debt up to his eyeballs with a group of potatoes (so much so that he is on the run from them) he loaned money from whilst he lived in Ul'dah. As for why he loaned the money in the first place? The best I can come up with is gambling. I'm also playing with the idea that he had a bit of a stint as a con artist - in an attempt to earn money to pay his debt off - so there are several angry investors waiting to skin him if they so much as set their eyes on him. I don’t know whether to keep these people vague or add more detail to them. Is there any in-lore group that he could have pissed off? Kiht’to is also a Black Mage - he knows it’s illegal, he’s not exactly one for living by the law - though he covers this up by being extra vigilant and insisting it’s just Thaumaturgy when people start to get too suspicious. He came into possession of his soulstone whilst looting (He was training as a Thaumaturge at the time). Also regarding the way Keeper society works: He hasn’t fathered any children. Instead of sticking around the Black Shroud he decided to move to Limsa to become an Arcanist (that didn’t last long...). Although he is interested in both men and women he prefers to sleep with men because he does want any, err, ‘problems’ and regrets not being more careful in the past. Seeing Seeker children with Keeper eyes makes him paranoid. After about a year and a half of studying to be an Arcanist he got bored and descended down a slippery slope of gradually more nefarious jobs just to get by. (Piracy maybe?) Because of his background growing up he is a proficient Archer. That's about it for now. :dazed:
