  1. I concur with the previous post. Muse Cast Xiv is a podcast that talks about nothing but lore. Each episode (so far) has covered a single topic. It is well hosted, thought out, and executed. Can't recommend them enough.
  2. I'm working on two Highlander brothers. If my understanding of their naming conventions is correct then their surnames are generally seen as something that is earned rather than something given. Hence despite the bloodties they have different surnames. Halrath Beastblood Hugo Wolfsbane
  3. A few days later... “What do you mean you don’t have enough coin for the Ferry!!” Hugo screamed angrily. Halrath, embarrassed by the mistake, roared back, “If I hadn’t spent my money trying to bribe the guards to let you out of jail, maybe we would have some!” Hugo snorted. “Bribe!? You killed two of them!” “Only after I ran out of money from bribing the first three!”, exclaimed Halrath. Both brothers were silent for several minutes. The silence was eventually broken when Hugo’s deep voice cut through the night air. “I have an idea!” Halrath looked at his brother’s swollen and bruised face grinning from ear to ear, and instantly knew what his brother's idea was. “No. No, we can’t do that. Seven Hells, Hugo. We can’t! We do not murder people for coin!” Hugo, looking slightly hurt by the last comment, quipped back.“Firstly… we do murder people for coin… but only when we are hired to do it. That’s how we make a living. Secondly, no one’s talking about murder. I’m just talking about a little robbery. No one gets hurt. The might get a little roughed up, but they certainly won't die... probably." Halrath sighed, and after several long moments quietly gave in to his brother. “Fine… You’re the one with the big idea, you find the poor sop we need to rob. Hugo pushed by his brother and walked toward the ferry dock while he grinned widely. “You think they’ll have ale on the Ferry?” ((OOC: I may be a bit rusty at this so comments and suggestions are always welcomed.))
  4. “Rumor has it there were three of them this time. Getting a bit brash these days, huh?” Halrath stared down at his younger brother with a wry smile. Hugo held out four fingers, and in a cracked dry voice responded, “Four. There were four of them this time… and one was the size of a Goobbue.” Halrath chuckled. “A Goobbue, huh?” Hugo slowly nodded his head and weakly extended his arms to imitate the size. “Huge…maybe twice the size of a Goobbue!... I think I may have killed that one. That night is a bit fuzzy.” Halrath shook his head and looked down at his nearly beaten to death brother. “We are guests in this place, Hugo. You can’t start a fight with every Sea Wolf that gives you a dirty look. What would father have said?” Hugo chuckled. “He would have told me that I was a coward for not picking a fight with five of them.” Both of the brothers laughed as Halrath used the jailer’s keys to unlock the cell door. Halrath walked over to his brother and helped him to his feet. Hugo placed his arm around his brother’s shoulder for support. With Hugo leaning heavily on his older brother then two Highlanders walked slowly toward the exit. “Seven Hells you smell awful! Did you piss yourself?” Halrath exclaimed. Hugo sniffed the air trying to catch a scent. “I don’t smell anything… Must be you.” As the two walked down the corridor Hugo noticed a couple of guards slumped on the floor in pools of blood. Hugo motioned towards them. Halrath kept his eyes fixed on the exit and nodded. “Hope you are well enough to travel. We need to leave Limsa tonight. I hear Ul'dah is nice this time of year. Maybe we need to dry out in the desert air for a while, No?” Hugo’s shoulders slumped a bit. “…But Ul'dahnian ale tastes of dirt…” ((OOC: Not sure where this is going to go, but I figured I needed to stop thinking about and just write. Hope you enjoy."))
  5. That was my understanding, hence my original post about whether such a story line would be considered "lore breaking". In real life, indoctrination (heavy or otherwise) can be undone to some extent, though to what extent I think depends on the individual and methods employed. I would also imagine that even if my character were to break the brainwashing implemented by the Empire the emotional and mental scaring would be severe. I'll have to fiddle with some of the details and write something out to see if I like where it goes. The other option I have is creating a slightly mad/insane older Midlander with a patient Lallafel assistant that tries desperately to keep him out of trouble.. a la Don Quioxte
  6. Awesome! Thanks for the input. I had originally thought of my character more as a ground soldier. Wounded in battle, lost amongst the mass casualties and left for dead. Only to find himself "rescued" by scavengers of the battlefield. I prefer to write with a little bit of grit. Maybe rather then the scavengers rescuing him out of the kindness of their hearts. They do so will ulterior motives. Sold in to slavery? Forced to fight in the gladiatorial arenas by The Syndicate? PTSD could make him hyper violent (the brainwashing of the empire didn't help either) and unpredictable as well, making him a good/dangerous fighter. The problem with this though is that it doesn't leave much room for outside RP. He'd be a loner, someone who avoided people rather than sought them out for adventures... Lots of ideas now. Thanks again! Peace, Halrath
  7. Thanks for the input! I think if I flesh it out a bit more i can make it work... And giving Hal some PTSD aspects might make for an interesting character. Thanks again! Peace, Halrath P.S please feel free to elaborate on the Empires military structure
  8. I'm having a bit of a time trying to nail down my character's background. So I'm asking you guys for some help... I'm looking at a male highlander. Enlisted/conscripted by the empire when they took over Ala Mhigo. Was there for the battle in 2.0. Didn't die, woke up slightly confused...and decided that it was a good a time as any to desert the empire and head towards Ul'dah or Limsa Lominsa. Thoughts? ideas? Am I killing the lore? Is it to generic? Thanks for any input you can give me. Peace, Halrath
  9. He doesn't normally wear a sweater just so we are clear. But My mother in law knitted something for the baby....and he fit in it so... Say hello to Boycat.
  10. I'll be 33 next month. No formal training in writing or literature exactly, but I have a BA and an MA in Religious Studies. I've done my fair share of writing and editing over the years, and there have been a lot of years. Truth be told though my grammar is still pretty terrible. So much so that towards the end of my academic career I had to have my wife edit my papers for me.... she even graded a few of my student's papers (don't tell the department). I've been RPing for a while now, since my mid 20's, with the bulk of it coming from WoW. I RPed in FFXI for a bit, but it was a small community on my server so it was never very extensive. I find it very interesting, and comforting, that I am not the only one of my age on here that not only plays FFXIV, but also RPs. Yay!!
  11. I think I'm going to go for this... http://www.amazon.com/PS3-Wireless-Keypad-Playstation-3/dp/B001ENPDJA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372191988&sr=8-1&keywords=ps3+keyboard+controller I assume it'll work much like the keypad on a cell phone. Should be manageable I think. I'm a minimalist, so if I can get away with not having to spend money for a wireless keyboard, or not having to worry about a wired keyboard getting in the way of things, I'll do it.
  12. Artax... And he will have an unexplainable fear of swamps.
  13. I'll be starting from scratch as well. You certainly won't be alone.

  15. Umm.. Sorry that should have been a response to a different thread... Please feel free to delete both of these posts.
  16. At the moment I think the majority of us in beta are on Gilgamesh. However once they open up the legacy servers, I think we will shift over to Balmung. Balmung should also the be the spot RPers go once the game goes live. This may also be totally wrong, so anyone who knows please feel free to correct me. -Halrath

  18. Assuming we are all on Gilgamesh, look for Halrath Stormsteel. Fair warning since I'm on the PS3 I've got no keyboard. So the best I can do at the moment are a couple of emotes. See you guys in game!
  19. That's awesome! And I've already used it for two potential characters! (Well...1 and 1/2 characters really, but that takes too much explanation.)
  20. Hello! Always nice to see a fellow WoW refugee. See you in game!

    Hello!

Hi everyone! I figured I'd take a minute or two to introduce myself. Now, where do I start... My role plying experience is limited somewhat. In fact, I haven't played many MMORPGS, or at least not for very long. I tend to gravitate towards one game at a time and play that one till either the keyboard or gamepad breaks. Hence why I ended up playing WOW for over 5 years. I RPed quite a bit there with a fantastic guild, but eventually things in my personal life shifted quite a bit (got married and had a baby) and I step away from the game and let them continue on with out me. I did play FFXIV 1.0 for a time, but was unable to keep up with it. I tried to RP a few times, but to no avail really. I think by that time either I was on the wrong server or the RP population had shrunk considerably. *shrugs* I enjoyed the game, but I'm a social creature and always find that a game like this is much more enjoyable when you've got friends to enjoy it with. I'm excited about 2.0 and really can't wait to give it FFXIV a second shot. Well, I've probably rambled on incoherently enough for now. It's nice to meet you all, and I hope to see you in game. Take care! -Halrath You know, This is exactly the reason one should read to stickied threads.... I haven't really come up with a concrete character idea. I think my days RPing Wow may have tainted my view of things, so I wanted to flesh out a couple characters before landing on anything firm I prefer a medium to heavy roleplaying style. Keeping most of the conversation IC, but I have found that in dungeons and larger groups OOC chat can be useful. Truth be told that since my time can be a bit limited, I tend to stick to message boards with a bit of story telling.
