With the Sun & Moon hype train getting ready to set off (and run for a year straight with 6 months of lead-up and then all the fun after release), I wanna get into the Pokemon spirit a little early: What pokemon would be your character's main partner? Would your character have a certain type specialty? And if you wanna get really into it, What kind of trainer would they be? A breeder, coordinator, gym leader? Maybe a member of Team Rocket or Galactic? -- For myself, Mercury's partner would likely be a Mienshao, with a general emphasis on Fighting types. He's still a wanderer, but living alongside this kind of pokemon would influence him to turn his dancing to a fighting style himself, focusing on melee instead of swordsmanship.

Understandable! I'll be looking into ideas and seeing what I can come up with. Would you prefer a post here or a PM if I come up with a character idea I want to offer up? -

Count me down for intensely interested. This sort of thing is right up my alley and I'd be delighted to participate (provided I come up with a satisfactory idea before the places are all taken!). To narrow down (or expand) my choices, how would you feel about a Ninja as one of them? Would that be, like the Warrior for Kordh, 'too cliche' for a 'thieves' theme since the base class is the Rogue? Specifically, what if the trope were reversed, such as a Ninja for Lobh but the greed isn't for material wealth / anything that can be stolen? (And if Ninja for Lobh is too much, would Ninja in general be alright, etc.) If none of these stand out to you / sound good, no worries, I'm just tossing around ideas. This is really a great setup. -
https://wiki.ffxiv-roleplayers.com/images/thumb/0/00/Screenshot_535.png/500px-Screenshot_535.png[/img] Need To Know :: Mercury Sanguinaire Duskwight, male, ~25, aromantic / asexual / polyamorous Professionally-trained dancer, self-taught swordsman Originally from Ishgard, now a wanderer. Frequents Ul'dah most often, then Limsa Lominsa, with Gridania being a rare stop Basic Plot Hooks :: Mercury has and on occasion still works as a companion, serving women, men, and all others. Anyone who was lonely and needed a date, or had promised to bring a date to a social event and couldn't find one, or just wanted to pay for a quick nightcap rather than woo someone into their bed, Mercury was happy to help for a pretty fee (and it didn't hurt when his clients chose to pamper him, either). Characters could have previously hired him, known someone who hired him and chatted him up, or otherwise know him through this channel. [Note this is not invitation for ERP, as I'm not interested in that at all -- it's just Mercury's work.] Oh, how the nightlife thrives! Of Mercury's friendly acquaintances, a majority of them have been made because he got a tad drunk and showed just how professional his dancing was, perhaps on a tabletop in the middle of a bar, or any surface that looked similarly capable of holding his weight. A tipsy Mercury is a charmingly unguarded, cheerfully energetic Mercury, ripe for friend-making. Though he is quite fond of his own style of swordsmanship, Mercury does seek to improve himself, and he figures none would be able to help him so much as a swordsman. He's never had formal training in swordplay, much as he's figured out on his own, so if he were to come across a particularly skilled swordsman he would gladly approach them for assistance or a spar (that Mercury would be very likely to lose). Specific Character Plots :: The Scorned Sibling The Childhood Friend For any of these, character-specific or just general hooks, I would love to discuss a preformed relationship or just start fresh with one of these to go on. With luck, I (and Mercury) will be transferring to Balmung within a day or two to get started, but until then you can contact me via this thread or PM!

Hard at work on Mercury Sanguinaire but now I'm late for being hard at work at my actual work!

regarding jobs -- not the how, but the what.
imayosh replied to imayosh's topic in Character Workshop
whoa, i totally missed that! what a great resource wow, sorry for the pointless thread then! -
so i normally main healer (though after twice in a row going through main story as WHM, i'm loathe to do it again), and i'm also partial to NIN, with my current character likely leaning BRD. but looking around, i feel like these roles have been filled by a majority of the characters i've seen! there are plenty of conjurers and arcanists, archers/bards seem to be in none-too-short supply either. and while i don't mind this at all, i like to get through pve (gotta get that sweet AST unlocked) and would enjoy doing this with a group when possible. basically my question here is are there any classes/jobs that are under- or overrepresented in the community? i know on such a big server as balmung it might not really matter, and the characters i've seen here are far from the only ones around, but this would also help me in helping brainstorm any secondary characters based on what role i wanted them to play. again, this is saying nothing ill of the healers/bards/what have you, i think it's awesome that so many characters lean that direction in a fantasy setting! i'm just looking for a vibe on what's most-needed or most-missed, as it were. (wasn't sure what forum to post this in, but i think character workshop works best?)

i'm 500% ready to spend $80+ on this hype train, fall in love with the new games, and buy another copy of each for rp purposes (i told myself this was a dumb thing to do but here i am with two pkmn x and two pkmn y, all with totally different uses) honestly tho after delphox i'm iffy on starters. i am weak to cats, what can i say, litten looks like a deviantart oc but i want it... unless it ends up an edgelord fire/dark type... i can handle the typing, dark is pretty sweet on a starter, but rip my aesthetic. on that note it's now been long enough that they can make a starter with a fairy typing safely so i'm guessing popplio for water/fairy, and my sincere hope is fire/ghost for litten but that's 100% hope 0% design-based

sounds good! would you like to just keep it organic and i'll meet up with you sometime after lia gets into balmung? or would you rather go into more detail? i still don't know the etiquette on how to go about more detailed discussions, so if you'd like to PM me or whatever the standard is i'm cool with it! but in this case, the meeting up in-game sounds like the best way to start too. edit: added lia's bounty hunting plot hook to the first post to make new finds easier!

Lia Sokolov's page is started and entirely unfinished!
-
funny enough, i was looking into bounty hunting as lia's actual occupation (vs his 'role' as someone's caretaker) from the start, since it's lucrative enough in short bursts and doesn't always require a full-time commitment. it also lines up with his general lawful-leaning (but entirely selfish) alignment. his personal interests outweigh his job description no matter what, though. if he did know who rhaya really was (which isn't necessarily the case, but if that's what you wanted to do), he'd be more intrigued by the bounty who didn't seem to be continuing a life of crime than interested in cashing her in. if you wanted, they could easily meet up because lia was looking for an easy bounty but decided she was too interesting to immediately turn in. and if you'd rather he not know her true identity, we can figure something else out too! lia does have a nose for the broken, as it were, can't resist a troubled soul.

ARE YOU A MAMA'S BOY RECENTLY DEPOSED OF YOUR MOTHER? A STRONG WARRIOR WITH NO BASIC SURVIVAL SKILLS? A RECKLESS HERO THAT CAN'T SAY NO TO A DEATHWISH? DO YOU NEED SOMEONE TO PAT YOUR HEAD, TELL YOU YOU'RE RIGHT, AND SEND YOU OFF TO WAR FEELING GOOD ABOUT YOUR BAD DECISIONS? THEN DO I HAVE A DEAL FOR YOU! https://wiki.ffxiv-roleplayers.com/images/9/98/Screenshot_529.png[/img] HIS NAME IS LIA AND HE'S READY TO KEEP YOUR ASS ALIVE!* *results may vary Alright maybe that's all a little excessive, but it gets the point across. Lia Sokolov is an Auri male, starting class likely archer, server likely Balmung but not yet created/transferred. Lia is a caretaker by nature, but a caretaker of particular taste and abilities. His skills in cooking, cleaning, and other basic necessities are average. His child-rearing is abysmal, as he finds children in general unpleasant and not worth his time yet. No, his services are of a different kind -- he is a companion for the powerful but weakened. The type of person he gravitates towards are the strong or strong-to-be, especially those with lofty goals. He loves the passionate and lives to support them in their endeavors, and more importantly, to care for them when they're broken. He only cares for the weary, the depressed, the damned, those who are tossed aside or ignored by society. The more righteous and angry and self-destructive his charge's cause, the more Lia thrives. After all, Lia has his own destructive streak, whether of himself or the one he's taking care of is entirely up to the latter. He can be loyal and compliant to an extreme degree, not due to a weak will, but because he wants to see the outcomes of bad decisions. It acts almost as a power trip in itself; if he's told "kill me," how far will he be allowed to go before the order is rescinded? His occasionally-lacking morality aside, Lia is good at his role. When his charge loses all hope, he'll stroke their hair and remind them why they must keep going. When they can't bring themselves to get out of bed, he'll bring them breakfast, lunch, dinner, for as long as they need, and keep them company until the mood passes. And as much as his own interest can be piqued by bad decisions, he won't follow any cause that is inherently doomed to fail or that he doesn't personally believe in. TL;DR: Lia is a caretaker with a taste for destruction, he likes people who are powerful but broken, and he's good at following orders while being entirely independent (and all too easy to depend on). Lia is inherently a companion character. He's a sidekick. Unfortunately, this means that he is rather useless without a main character to play alongside. It would be nice to find a broken hero for him to nurture, thus this posting, though I'll probably be playing him running solo until I can find such a soul. Edit to note: Lia's nature isn't just for One Special Person, and he'll gravitate towards anyone a little messed up and downtrodden. He's a nurturer, for a purpose or otherwise, so if your character doesn't fit the exact specifications or isn't interested in needing Lia so explicitly, there's still plenty of opportunity to interact and for Lia to have an interest! Further details such as place of origin and other background-specific things are currently undecided and quite flexible in possibility at the moment. He's still in his baby stages of character development, so things may change in general before his official creation, but everything listed here is fairly set! If you're interested or have any questions, feel free to PM me or post in this thread. More Plot Hooks: * In his time away from handling the caretaken, Lia makes his spending money through good old bounty hunting. He's mid-range in seriousness, but as of 'right now' he's probably between charges, making him hunt a little more often. If your character is in the same line of business or is wanted for something or other, we can do something with that! * He loves gardening. That's not actually a plot hook I guess so much as just a general fact but the point remains. Player Directory: imayosh | Wiki: Lia Sokolov

thanks for the answers! honestly looking around the "balmung is necessary" consensus seems well-earned, most of the interesting characters or plots i've seen have been balmung... it seems i might have to make an investment after all. hopefully pre-planning and buildup here will suffice until the paycheck hits and i can justify it haha. it's such a relief to hear about the accepting community -- all my time in ffxiv i've only really interacted with my close friends, and the sparingly few times i've met a friend of a friend, they've been major bigots lmao. turns out the same person brought all the bad eggs in, but it still had me nervous to enter a totally new community! (and while i have nothing against those whose characters are pants-focused, i won't have to worry about that myself, so i'm not concerned)

after looking around the forums and getting a feel for the character/playerbase here, i better understand the general style of rp and characters. as such, the second point is largely moot -- it seems i'll have not just better luck but more fun working within the confines provided (to an extent). i'm used to these kinds of environments encouraging a style of rp i don't mesh well with, but it seems there's no need to worry!
