  1. Right, so in the context of the healing school idea, WHM it would just be handled like extra advanced mastery of conjuring and not the actual White Mage idea as it exists in the lore. With similar adaptations made where necessary to avoid the conflict of illegality (unless it being some sort of underground thing, where the illegality is acknowledged and part of the FC's background story as well). For my part, I am just looking for others potentially interested in RP built around arcanima and its study and application (so effectively an extension of the in-game guild), but thought that was likely too narrow, so figured extending it to schools based more around the general roles than a specific class/job would yield more results as far as maybe pointing me toward some guilds that do just that. But so far it seems the majority of RP FCs are either taverns, trading companies, mercenaries, or organized crime.
  2. I know that Jobs and RP have been discussed a fair amount, but I couldn't find something quite like this (apologies if I missed it). I've been reading a fair bit lately about Jobs in relation to RP. I've always chosen my classes/jobs/crafts/etc in games based on the character I am playing (even if not actively RPing them). FFXIV seems to make RPing your Job very difficult because the Jobs are often handled in the game story as one-of-a-kind, the PC is the first in a Age with the Gift, etc. As such it doesn't seem that common for people to incorporate their jobs into their RP in this game so this whole post might be a moot point, but in case there are people like me out there who like to mesh their PvE with their RP where they can... I was wondering if there were (or maybe had been in the past even if no longer active) FC's that were conceptually built around the jobs or classes. Sort of like an extension of the in-game Guilds for each class (or maybe broken into role so as to be less limiting). So, for example, you could have a Healers FC for players focused on Healing classes/jobs and within that FC you could devise a plot/storyline around the training and development of whatever skills, thus allowing a Conjurer to RP as a White Mage without actually being a White Mage as the game story understands it. You could devise your own Guild Lore based on the game lore, while tweaking the OP aspects down. You could have Healers School as the concept of the FC (hopefully something more creatively named than Healers School lol) and it could be structured something like ... Levels 1-30 are Apprentice and are Conjurers and Arcanists Levels 30-50 are Journeymen and are White Mages or Scholars* Levels 50-80 are Masters continuing in the Jobs from Journeyman tier or becoming an Astrologian. Levels 80-future level caps are Grand Masters, same as above *The jobs could even just retain their Class names in places like Conjurer where being a White Mage is often problematic and would be trickier to adapt the lore around. Or the guild could come up with its own names for the roles to differentiate them from the in-game concepts, while adapting the in-game version to a more RP-friendly (and therefore less WoL/OP) version. Personally, I like to stay as aligned with lore as I can, but I recognize that sometimes things need to change or at least be tweaked to work on a broader scale. Similarly, you could have a Tanking School, and DPS Schools (again with better names) broken into Ranged Physical, Ranged Magic, and Melee Physical. Or you could go broader and have a Magic School encompassing all caster classes, whether healing or DPS. Maybe your Magic School requires people to have reached level 30 and selected a job before they join-- and that job will be the IC role, and if someone wants to change it, they would need to RP the process of learning a new skill set, etc. since in IC no one really has all the skills of all the classes and jobs the way the game allows. In a lot of ways, this would be similar to a military-themed FC, really, just...with a focus built around the classes/jobs rather than a military order. Frankly, for all the non-magic classes, it would probably be a LOT like a military company with ranks and divisions based on the classes of choice. Given that FFXIV allows for people to have multiple classes/jobs, having a FC of all IC Healers would not preclude your ability to run content with your FC mates as many of them would likely have leveled other classes as well, so the FC theme really only applies to the RP side of things. I guess basically I am just wondering if anything like this has been tried and if not, is it something people would potentially be interested in? I mean, I'm not far enough in the game to consider myself equipped to try and launch an FC and have yet to even RP in game with anyone yet, but potentially, down the road, might give it a go...
  3. Is there a resource regarding travel times between cities? At least between the main city-states? I have seen some threads claiming the it takes 2-3 months to sail from Limsa Lominsa to Kugane (I'm not far enough along to have a clue where the latter location is). I've seen someone reference NPC dialogue claiming that a chocobo rider can get from Ul'dah to Gridania in a day, but they are pushing their bird to the max to do it-- so I'd guess that means 10ish hours? So maybe double that if it's a traveler on foot? I am just trying to get a sense of timing for my characters travels. She is primarily in Limsa IC, except now that I had to join a GC, after much deliberation, I went with the Order of the Twin Adder in Gridania (where she was raised post Ala Mhigo being invaded) because it just makes the most sense character-wise. She is in Limsa for the Arcanist Guild, but the Order is who she'd be more loyal to. So I'm trying to figure how long it would reasonably take to travel via non-aether means between Limsa and Gridania in particular, but also wondering about approximate distances between other main city states. I am a little unclear on how people regard the aethernet in RP, but it seems like it's generally regarded as a reality in world, but a very taxing one that the average joe does not really use. So depending on the type of character you are playing determines whether or not you'd reasonably be able to make use of it with any regularity and if your character is doing it a lot, you might be in Mary Sue territory. And to that end, it seems like the small crystals within cities are more or less completely ignored in RP and it's just the main big crystals that are relevant. I think, at least for my purposes, I would IC only potentially include travel from one big crystal to another, ignoring the mini-crystals within city-states, and disregard the teleportation ability entirely. (I of course make rampant use of these OOC though lol)
  4. So far my best bets seem to be hurrying along through the MSQ into Stormblood so I can have interaction with other Ala Mhigans who've all mostly played through that point in their respective stories. The MSQ has gotten a bit more OP for an RP plot line, so I'm more using the Arcanist Guild quests as her main IC questline, and then just picking and choosing which other quests are IC or not based on how reasonable they are. So though you might see me crafting around Ul'dah, IC Rilya is still located in Limsa Lominsa and has not been to Ul'dah in recent years, though she has gone before, as an assistant to her adoptive parents when they traveled tor the Goldsmiths' Guild with some regularity. Anyway, a couple ideas for some options for RP with Rilya in her Limsa Lominsa newbie days. 1) Rilya could make friends with some other would-be Arcanists and perhaps we explore the landscape and whatnot in pursuit of opportunities to work on our skills (FATES, perhaps?); additionally, we could meet a non-Arcanist out and about who joins us for whatever reason as well. This would basically just be some questing about IC and retiring to a tavern in the evenings or something like that. 2) We could devise some sort of mystery plot afoot in all the Guilds in LL that many of the veteran Guild members don't seem to be aware of, but the new initiates are determined to get to the bottom of it (Such a plot could also be confined to the Arcanist Guild, but in the interest of casting as wide a net as possible, why not include newbie Rogues, Marauders, Armorers, Blacksmiths, Culinarians, and Fishers?) Maybe the Guilds suddenly kick out a bunch of people for no reason and we need to figure out why and who is behind it to get back in. Something like that. I don't know. 3) I'd be interested in a mentor/mentee RP path for Rilya as well, potentially. Whether in Arcanima or if someone just wants to make sure she doesn't get herself killed and so decides to come along on her exploits to teach her how to survive life on the road. I'm open to lots of ideas. The core of it is questing IC to some extent.
  5. ooh, good to know. I'm just skimming FCs and seeing what vaguely looks like a possible fit for now, so the more options the better.
  6. Yeah, I know. Just both worlds are locked for new characters so I just went with where my old character was. I am not opposed to potentially paying to transfer to Mateus (if I'm correct in understanding that is the only way to get a 'new' character over there currently? and Balamung is totally inaccessible to me aside from visiting) but I'd need to network and bit and see about visiting for some events or whatnot. Not going to spring for that blindly, but could definitely do it down the line if I locate a group that looks like a good fit. I should definitely look into joining some of the Discords and chatting with people.
  7. Yeah, I've gotten a few random invites to FCs but have generally declined. I've always responded asking for more info on the off chance they are RP focused, but since they haven't mentioned that in the invite, I assume they aren't. I didn't notice anything regarding Returner status, but I'll check around when I log on tonight.
  8. ngl, there is a good chance that I might eventually pursue a Red Mage build eventually too but I'm trying not to get ahead of myself. You are absolutely right, she would be aware of them though, if vaguely due to her young age. I am thinking she was only 5 or 6 when it happened.
  9. After further reading, I'm finding that apparently many regard incorporating the main storyline in the game as something of an RP taboo and so I do want to clarify that I don't mean RPing as the Warrior of Light, which strikes me as rather god-modey, but just following the general trajectory of it, while adjusting our IC aspects accordingly for things that are too OP for an individual to do. Hence why I initially noted that things would be adjusted as needed in the first paragraph above. I'm mostly going with the, I think, vague premise of Rilya wanting to master the arcane arts to help free Ala Mhigo, which I understand is part of the main quest eventually. That's her mission statement, effectively. How that process happens does not need to follow exactly along with the main quest, but I figured it provided a basic path to follow. She won't be perpetually stationed in a single location for RP, I want to RP her entire journey on this quest (more or less, anyway, as I'm already playing so who knows how far I'll get before finding any RP buddies) focused around becoming a master arcanist (eventually scholar-- although tbh, even that could change through RP, who knows) and thought just sort of tagging along the main quest line would be the easiest way to do that, but I am definitely open to devising another route for our IC interactions if you want to keep the actual main quests OOC.
  10. So I haven't logged into the game for a few years, but I have a few questions about chat channels and things. Apologies if these are discussed elsewhere. In the absence of a global chat channel, how do new players chat with people before joining FCs or Linkshells? I mean, aside from sending tells to specific individuals. When I first sampled this game in 2014 I remember the chat being inundated with goldspammers, but I also remember being able to ask for a rez if I died out somewhere and usually someone was around nearby, they'd come help, but it seems very quiet out of the cities (I've only been in and around LL for now). Or is /shout what you use and just hope for the best? I am aware of the Novice Network, but it seems you have to be invited by a mentor to join so...is there a place to request invites maybe? And with regard to RP specifically, do people just use the /say channel for RP in general or is there a specific channel or emote option? Not emote like triggering whatever animation, but my primary MMO experience has been LOTRO which has /say but also has an 'emote channel' where you type "/e" before whatever and it inserts your character name-- like "/e nods in agreement" will become "Rilya nods in agreement" in the log. Is there something like that in FF or is it all /say? Or is that also confined to LS or FC channels, as applies?
  11. I am new to RP in FF (and more or less new to the game overall, despite having had a few false starts in the past). I've got a character and am looking for some traveling companions, basically. Or a FC that has lower level players interested in RPing through the main questline (adjusting things as necessary on occasion, I assume). The character is based on a character I am developing in some original fiction, so this is sort of an AU version of her. Mainly to help me work out her personality some more. So with my original fiction premise in the back of my head, I did some cursory review of places/situations in Eorzea that would allow for a semi-similar scenario for her background to what my own fantasy world entails and what I've come to at the moment is this: My character, Rilya Oroa, is an Elezen Arcanist. She was born and raised in Ala Mhigo (or perhaps a small village nearby) and she was orphaned when her family and most everyone she knew was killed when the Garlean Empire invaded. She comes from a long line of Arcanists and is determined to master the craft and return to Ala Mhigo to help free it from Imperial rule. After the invasion, she escaped and fled to the Black Shroud with some other Elezen survivors and she grew up there, coming to Limsa Lominsa now in her mid-to-late 20s to join the Arcanists' Guild and begin her personal quest to aid in the freeing of her home. (This premise is because it looks like liberating Ala Mhigo is an eventual plot point in the main story, likely quite a ways away from my character at this time, but I might have misunderstood, so by all means, enlighten me if so. I skimmed some stuff, but didn't want to have the entire plot spoiled from the get for me since I've yet to play through). She is reserved, thoughtful, intelligent, empathetic, and kind. She also lacks confidence, is not always honest with her feelings, and is not the most courageous person (of course, hopefully she is able to grown in some of these areas through the story, but we will see how she does). Yet she is determined to do her part to free her home and is committed to learning all she can about the arcane arts to enable her to do just that. I do consider my class/jobs as relevant when I RP, so I am focusing very much on the Arcanist/Scholar path and might pick up a craft or two, if one seems like it would make sense alongside that course. Others don't need to be concerned with Ala Mhigo, but if you have a low level character in the Limsa Lominsa area that might also have personal reasons that will move them along the main storyline axis, perhaps Rilya and them can journey together. Play Time/Days: I am located on the west coast of the US and most often play in the evenings after 6:30pm, with Mondays, Tuesdays (possibly slightly later start), and Thursdays currently being my most regular days. Occasionally I am not up for RP and just want to do some questing, but usually IC is the preferred mode. I am not concerned with rushing to endgame. I'll get there when I get there. So ideally if I could find some people to quest with maybe once or twice a week as we slowly but surely advance the main story together, that would be ideal. Let me know if you have any thoughts, questions, FC recommendations, etc. Hope to connect with some people in game soon!
  12. Hi, I'm Andi. 33 years old, located on the west coast of the US and mostly active in game in the evenings after 6:30ish until 10 or 11ish. MMORPG background: I've been pretty active in Lord of the Rings Online for the past 8 years. Dabbled in FFXIV when it relaunched back in 2013, but didn't have the time for 2 MMOs. I've also dabbled in ESO. Basically, I get sporadically bored of LOTRO and want to try something new, but my love of Tolkien often brings me back to that. When I tried FF in 2013, it was riddled with goldspammers, which made chat unbearable and I didn't continue past my free trial month at the time. A few years later I paid for another month and tried again, and was happy to see the goldspammers were much reduced, but for some reason or other, can't recall, I didn't stick around. So here we are, for attempt 3, because I want a change of scenery again and cursed covid has resulted in me spending more time at home, so I have time for 2 MMOs now. I love the single-player Final Fantasy games 7, 8, 9, and 10, so I do have some familiarity with the lore in a broader sense, but definitely need to brush up on my lore specific to Eorzea. RP experience: Mostly in LOTRO; some in ESO. Never done it in a non-MMO setting. Character ideas/info: Rilya Oroa. She is a Wildwood Elezen Arcanist character (probably eventual Scholar). She is based on a protagonist I'm developing in a novel I am working on. Naturally, her biography here is different since the lore of my own fantasy world is different from the lore of FF. So in a way, this is like an AU version of her, I suppose. As I said above, I still need to re-familiarize myself with the lore in the MMO to see where I can fit her. A cursory review of some places in the game/plot points has lead me to something like... She was born and raised in Ala Mhigo (or perhaps a small village nearby) and her family and most everyone she knew was killed when the Garlean Empire invaded. She comes from a long line of Arcanists and is determined to master the craft and return to Ala Mhigo to help free it from Imperial rule. After the invasion, she escaped and fled to the Black Shroud with some other Elezen survivors and she grew up there, coming to Limsa Lominsa now in her mid-to-late 20s to join the Arcanists Guild. Definitely open to suggestions if parts of that seem like they don't really work-- I realize Ala Mhigo is mostly Hyur, so maybe Elezen is a weird fit there, but *shrug* Nothing is set in stone with her here yet, just trying to find things that sort of parallel events in my novel so that I have a similar, even if wildly different, circumstance to explore her character in. I do have my Mi'qote Lancer character from my initial attempts with this game and will probably dust him off at some point and look for maybe a criminal guild type scene for him. Who knows. Focusing on Rilya for now. How did you learn about the coalition? Google searches for RP relating to Final Fantasy. What kind of a role-player are you aiming to be? (e.g. Light, medium, or heavy). Medium, probably. It kind of depends with me. Some days I just want to quest and other days I want to be in full RP mode. I do tend to get antsy when RP is too confined to just chatting around a tavern type of stuff (though I enjoy that on occasion as well, just not only that) and am looking for a FC that maybe does more active questing while IC. Not interested in ERP, though romance is potentially fine if it develops organically. I'd be particularly interested in joining a FC that quests together with some regularity, but that isn't going to care if you don't log on every day. I am not really RPing the Warrior of Light thing so much as it's a bit god-mode for me, but I do want to work through the main quest-line mostly in character (maybe overlooking any particularly god-mode type quests if any come up) and preferably not entirely solo, so...if there are other new players or older players with new characters they are developing that might be up for forming a small group that can quest together maybe twice a week or something... I am in no rush to get to endgame content at all, so looking for other people that are up for taking their time working through the storyline IC, adjusting as necessary. Time/Location/Availability: Currently Monday and Thursday evenings are most open; weekends vary. Again, west coast time. Currently on Coeurl since that's where my original character was, but not opposed to moving servers if there's a perfect group for me somewhere else (I actually wanted to join Mateus on this character since I was told that is one of the RP hotspots, but alas, it was closed to new characters). Rilya is headquartered in LL for the time being, so FC's based there are preferred. Anyway, I look forward to meeting people and getting some feedback/suggestions on where Rilya might fit in.
