Dravus Posted June 12, 2015 Share #26 Posted June 12, 2015 Well, Limsa may be nicer if you are alright with harboring pirates openly, Having a secret society that operates outside the law to execute justice which may be execution in general and a what is effectively a military dictatorship (Merlwyb is an Admiral, she only is in control because she has the biggest guns) Same goes for Gridania with their blue and orange moral scale where an elemental can just decree that a sick child cannot be healed because they feel like it. Limsa also made a pact with the Kobolds yet backed down on that and began expanding into their territory...which contributed heavily to them summoning Titan. If I recall correctly Ala Mhigo actively threatened and tried to invade the neighbouring city states until it was forced to submit to the Garlean Empire. Had the Garleans not invaded Eorzea Ala Mhigo would likely have reigned supreme and conquered the other nearby city states. Link to comment

You're far from the only one who jumped to that conclusion about Gridania based on.. a single throwaway line from an NPC, but I always took it to mean that the Conjurer in question attempted to use her powers (which they believe to derive from the elementals) and failed. Not that the Elementals came out and directly said "no" for some arbitrary reason. Because frankly, I am struggling to think of any other instance in which this occurs, whether via the conjurer storyline or other NPC dialogue. No doubt, there are black spots on all of the city-states including Gridania, but I don't think this is one of them. Link to comment

They can be called upon for aid, or angered. But they don't have a vote every time someone wants to case Aero. Link to comment
Mercurias Posted June 12, 2015 Share #29 Posted June 12, 2015 My character, Soren, is a combat character who would very much prefer to solve the vast majority of his problems without getting involved in violence at all if he can do anything to prevent it. He prefers talking things out before taking swings, and he hates killing. More than anything, he just wants to be free. THAT BEING SAID, there is a strong martial bent to Ishgardian society, from its founding to its centuries-long culture of warfare, so it would make a whole lot of sense for a whole lot of soldiers to come out of there. Like one of the quest NPCs in Coerthas says: "Fall to a dragon, go to heaven. Fall to aught else, who gives two hells? ...That's the Ishgard way." Link to comment
