Sapphire44 Posted July 10, 2015 Share #1 Posted July 10, 2015 I need some advice, on a few things. I'm thinking about creating a whole new character and dive into an rp environment on Balmung (I'll get on there somehow). I've looked up some naming "rules" and I've noticed Male Keepers of the moon are generally rarer than most. Also that lore friendly names follow the 1-10 off the mother's surname, so would a name like Kyran'sae Shuga be valid? (I know the sae=4 and its rare for more than 2-3 sons be around) But here is the main question I'd like answered, my hope for my character is to not be family-centered. I'm not sure if I'll go the orphan route or he just left his tribe yet, but I want to stick with the nomadic theme of the Miqo'te race. I want my guy to be a traveler who ends up in the forest city of Gridania. There he's remained from a young age and has chosen to make this his home. With this style of backstory does that mean he could forsake his family name and just have his name as Kyran? Would that still be lore-friendly? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Link to comment
Sigil.9054 Posted July 10, 2015 Share #2 Posted July 10, 2015 I don't have a firm grasp on the lore yet, but as I understand it, Keepers tend to be more insular. So any of them wandering the land on their lonesome would be reasonable. Also, they're more family orientated than tribal. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Link to comment
Magellan Posted July 10, 2015 Share #3 Posted July 10, 2015 My understanding is that Keeper clans tend to be small; two to three families for the most part, and that the males tend to be nomadic, travelling from clan to clan for breeding. Clans are matriarchal. Link to comment
Sin Posted July 10, 2015 Share #4 Posted July 10, 2015 Hello Sapphire44 and welcome! Here's the dealio, my friend. Having more than two or three sons is rare, but it happens. You need very little explaining to do as to why a Male Keeper of the Moon wanders the land on his lonesome as they are nomads and wanderers by nature/culture. Kyran'sae Shuga is a fine name. Fourth born of Matriarch Kyran Shuga. The Miqo'te as a whole do not have a nomadic theme, certainly Seekers live in tribes presiding over specific territories. Keepers of the Moon similarly live in clans comprised of several families. Keepers of the Moon males specifically however are lone wanderers, presumably wandering from clan to clan after coming of age. Though that's not been outright stated, it can be heavily inferred in a Post Moogle quest at level 50 where a sedentary male presiding over many females is seen as grotesque. You don't need to orphan him or have him disown his family. It's entirely reasonable for him to wander right into Gridania and fall in love with it or whatever reason you have for him staying there. Though keep in mind there is some racism to deal with as a Keeper living in Gridania. As to your final question, what your character wishes to be known as is entirely up to him, I don't think there's any government institutions presiding over names. However, in my opinion, I think culturally because the first part of the name is the mother's first - all that defines a keeper male is that number. Taking off the number and just going by the momma's name would be like losing some of your identity. I play my Keeper as very proud of that number, oftentimes correcting folks when they leave it out of his name. "Zagi, is my mom's name. My name is Zagi'-zi." If he wants to reject the culture he comes from I think he would altogether drop both names and choose something entirely different, but once again that's his choice. And yours by association. Sorry this got so long winded. Later! Have fun. 5 Link to comment

Blue Posted July 10, 2015 Share #6 Posted July 10, 2015 One thing I was never legitimately sure was whether you'd need to count sisters also when naming a Miqo'te male. For example, if a male Miqo'te is born after two females sisters, is he to be named with the suffix 'a (because he is the first male to be born), or 'li (because he is the third to be born from his mother, after sister 1 and sister 2)? SE never clarified that. To avoid any mistake I made my Miqo'te male be a firstborn. (Also I'd like to reiterate that the Keepers "clans" are a case of lore established by the community, not the game, and you are not forced to embrace it. I for example prefer to think Keepers simply live in matriarchal families, not clans. Keepers are by lore more solitary and introvert than Seekers, so I find it more fitting to believe they stick to smaller groups. It's a lore-hole that anyone can really fill the way they want to, I suppose.) Link to comment

Even if you're born after two sisters you're still the first son. Even if five sisters are born afterwards, your brother will still be the second son and thereby be named Whatever'to Whatever. As to the second part of your post, Keepers of the Moon living in clans is not community headcanon. Here's a quote from the naming conventions. The Keepers of the Moon lead more solitary lives, rarely forming communities of more than two or three families. Therefore, a tribal letter is not assigned to the names. So while the use of the specific word Clan is not present here, a group of two or three close-knit families is the precise definition of a clan. Anyway, call them what you want. Clans or communities. They do still live in small groups of inter-related or close knit families, though never more than two or three families. Link to comment
