Duplicitous Rex Posted January 18, 2013 Share #1 Posted January 18, 2013 So I've decided to give FFXIV another go. Left the game fairly early on when it became a hassle to even give SE my money using their byzantine system. Let's hope this run goes a bit smoother as it looks like it will. I'm currently in the Navy stationed in Italy on the USS Mount Whitney. My contract will be ending in the next couple of months, which should coincide with the game's release. This means I'll finally have the time to enjoy an MMO again. I started in this genre with Everquest back in 2000, and have since gone through FFXI, City of Heroes, World of Warcraft, Vanguard, Guild Wars 1 & 2, and a couple others. I've been playing tabletop RPG's most of my life, but RPing in an MMO started for me in City of Heroes. The game lent itself well to RP with it's robust character creation and advancement along with loads of dev support. I now find it a bit boring to play an MMO without the spice of RP, which can be a bad thing with how poor the communities are in some games. You guys seem to have a small, but dedicated, core group that has weathered the game as it was, so I have high hopes that it will continue in the future. As for my character, I'm leaning towards playing a Hellsguard Roegadyn raised and trained by a band of brigands, whom he later joined. Whether he was a child of a brigand who died or a child stolen from a caravan, no one has ever told him. Nor does he really care. He was in prison during Bahamut's rampage, and thus escaped the eradication of his band, whom had been hired by the Eorzian alliance as a scouting team. He keeps an easygoing attitude and seems to find some humor in nearly any situation, a smirk never far from his face. In social situations he tends to try and push people's buttons to gauge their personality, and can't help but bully those who won't defend themselves. I'll probably have him be in his mid-30's. Name-wise, I had thought of a couple names that a group of highwaymen would give a Roegadyn child, such as Big Trouble or Road Block, but they might be too silly and distracting. So the name is still up in the air. Anyways, I look forward to playing the game and interacting with your brainchildren. Thanks for having me. Link to comment
Ellie Posted January 18, 2013 Share #2 Posted January 18, 2013 Welcome to the forums Duplicitous Rex! Your character looks great so far, I can't wait to see him in action. And if I can think of any names for him, I'll be sure to let you know. Also, I may prod you now again for knowledge of the nautical sort, should you possess it, but that can wait. We're all still in a bit of limbo around here, but once beta is out things might pick up. Link to comment
Eva Posted January 18, 2013 Share #3 Posted January 18, 2013 Welcome!! It really pleases me to hear that there will be another roegadyn running around (the world just needs more roegs)!! Be warned though, you may need to pry Gerik from your leg. I never played City of Heroes but I have always heard good things about it and I know a lot of people were sad a few months back when I suppose it kind of came to a halt. Looking forward to hearing more about you in-game when things take off in a few months, and of course up until then here on the forums. Link to comment
YesGood Posted January 19, 2013 Share #4 Posted January 19, 2013 Yay another Hellsguard Roe! And a male one! I like the concept you have so far and the idea of where he'll be during the whole big mess of Bahamut's face-rolling. I'm new here too, but I say welcome too! Link to comment
TheLastCandle Posted January 19, 2013 Share #5 Posted January 19, 2013 Imprisoned, hm? Mind if I ask where and by whom, or if that carries any importance? The reason I ask is because I stopped playing some few months before Bahamut's rage, and the story I have for Tev's whereabouts during that time includes a prison... At any rate, welcome! We're all very much looking forward to ARR and hoping for an influx of new and returning role-players. Link to comment

Duplicitous Rex Posted January 19, 2013 Author Share #7 Posted January 19, 2013 Thanks for the welcome. @Elle My knowledge concerning the Age of Sail isn't perfect, but I'll answer any questions I can. @Teveriel My Roeg will have been kept in a prison (doesn't really matter which one) as collateral for his group, The Ragged Men. The band had been captured after an unsuccessful raid on an armed caravan transporting pay to the army. The commander of the group, knowing the large battle that was approaching, decided to recruit the brigands as scouts for his troops (for a fee, of course). The brigand leader, Jarrik the Old, accepted the deal after being convinced of the necessity of keeping the Garlean Empire out of Eorzea. The alternative of the entire band being hanged was an incentive. A lottery was held to decide which member would get the cushy job of being collateral in a nice warm cell while the rest of them tramped over the countryside. My Roeg won, and thus ended up in prison and didn't get incinerated. If you want to collaberate on backstory intertwining, then I'm open to suggestions. Link to comment

Duplicitous Rex Posted January 21, 2013 Author Share #14 Posted January 21, 2013 soooo... what server on EQ? This was over a decade ago so I can't remember. I quit EQ in '03 to play FFXI. I started right after the Ruins of Kunark expansion came out. Had a Dark Elf Shadowknight and grinded through that hell of a world with some friends from high school. Link to comment
Moltove Posted January 21, 2013 Share #15 Posted January 21, 2013 Ah, very nice! come to think of it...I can't even remember when I even started...but I remember joining in I think...just after Gates of Discord (well after Kunark launch, and I think...the first expansion after Planes of Time). As far as I know, we're the only EQ players here >.> It's actually surprising-- all the new people coming in and some of the established members here just don't have EQ on their MMO record-- and it used to be a staple! Not even EQ2! But alas, WoW has taken care of that and we're in the Tera/Old Republic/Guild Wars 2 era anyways. Link to comment
Duplicitous Rex Posted January 21, 2013 Author Share #16 Posted January 21, 2013 Well, EQ is one of the grandaddies of the MMO genre, which didn't really take off until WoW. Also EQ was a terribly difficult game with very few of the features most players today take for granted, such as maps and being able to see in the dark. But back then I didn't know any better and happily fetched my body back from the depths of hell naked. FFXI orignally appealed to me because it was similar to EQ in it's combat and levelling, but more refined and with infinitely better graphics. Also chocobos. Link to comment
TheLastCandle Posted January 21, 2013 Share #17 Posted January 21, 2013 When EQ came out, I was still heavily involved in a subscription-based MUD. I don't think my computer at the time could even run it. I was still using Win95 on the ol' family PC. I guess my first "real" MMO was FFXI, followed by WoW a couple of years later unless you count the original SSI Neverwinter Nights. Really fond memories of FFXI. It's not even close to what it was when I played, around the time Chains of Promathia came out. Link to comment
