douhneill Posted December 21, 2016 Share #1 Posted December 21, 2016 Heya! I found this place while looking for some answers regarding RPing in FFXIV, and I'm glad I did! Unfortunately, this new information really has me unsure of what I want to do next... I've been away from playing FFXIV for almost a year now and with the recent 4-day retrial thing SquEnix is doing right now it really got me wanting to play again, especially since I only really stopped playing when I did because I couldn't afford the subscription fee, but I can afford it now, so I really don't have much of a reason to not play again. But while back when I played before it was mainly for the sake of having something to progress with, I've been really wanting to play FFXIV as a Roleplaying game where I can really be the character that I've developed and come to associate myself with when playing. So I've been debating if I wanted to start again from scratch on one of the RP worlds or try to find a smaller community with my old character. I'm not worried much about the time it would take to grind, rather the effort it would take to either get into one of the RP worlds compared to finding a community to join on Jenova. Suffice to say, I'm probably going to be looking a lot through the forums over the next while just to try and get more of a feel for what my options actually are and how much they weigh, but if anyone could point me in the right direction to get more information, that would be great. Either way, I'm glad to have found these forums, and I'm looking forward to the stories I'll get to live out with like-minded people. Link to comment
Aya Posted December 21, 2016 Share #2 Posted December 21, 2016 There are a few small communities here and there, and the name Jenova sounds familiar.. so you may find a small one there! There is a sizable community on Gilgamesh, with their own community webpage. Then there is the unbelievable and all-consuming RP community on Balmung (which is the best best). But, Balmung is locked and requires either exquisite post-reset timing, or a paid character transfer to get on. Link to comment
Thunderbolt300 Posted December 21, 2016 Share #3 Posted December 21, 2016 Welcome aboard to the RPC! Sadly I don't have a whole lot to contribute here- you'll have to do some digging on Jenova to find anything, I'm sure. Balmung has a barrier to entry, but it's worth the move over if what you're looking for is primarily RP. In any case, best of luck! Link to comment
Deahfel Posted December 21, 2016 Share #4 Posted December 21, 2016 Hi there and welcome! I am sure whatever server you end up on you can find a roleplaying community that can give you what you are looking for. I think Balmung or Gilgamesh are probably going to give you the best odds of success though. One thing you mentioned in your post caught my attention...You mentioned you are really looking for something to progress with. I would really try to narrow down how you are looking for your character to progress and what goals you have for them so that you can tailor your RP to that. As it sounds like you are coming back after getting burnt out on FF14 in the past. I think that would help keep you engaged more and give you more of that feeling of being connected with your character like you had mentioned. Hopefully that makes sense . If not feel free to ask any questions you might have. Link to comment

If not feel free to ask any questions you might have. That's not exactly what I'd meant - when I started FFXIV, I'd played the game as, well, a game. Leveling up classes, spending hours a day crafting or gathering, those were (and still are) enjoyable ways to wind down, and that's what I used the game for, but the more I played the more I got into the head of what I imagined my character to be like, but unfortunately I really never actually put any effort into making the roleplaying side of the game a focus. When I did end up dropping the game, it was mainly because I couldn't afford it at the time, and I didn't pick it back up because I got hooked on other games in the meantime. In fact, I feel like the fact that I never put in the effort to try to roleplay more often is what's really getting me to want to play the game again, starting from a fresh character if need be. That being said, that is some good advice, and I'm still debating exactly what I want to do from a roleplaying standpoint, at least "mechanically". At the core, I want to be able to live life in the game as my character, rather than do what I'd been doing where I basically roleplay as though my character is the one playing the video game, if that makes any sense. The best example was one time when my friends were having an engagement party for two characters on one of their FCs, and my character got a huge crush on another character, to the point where I was getting flustered over it outside of the game. Everything else is more about the hows rather than the whys, but they're still important, and the more I look at things, the more I'm realizing there's a lot to consider. Do I want to start a new in-game character and experience the story of a fresh adventurer trying to find her place in the world she recently thrust herself into? Or do I want to stay as my currently established character, already a fairly seasoned adventurer, and have her story start when she finds a new guild? How much of the game story do I want to have incorporated into my character's story? Do I want to rename her so that her name fits proper Lalafell naming conventions? A lot of little questions like that are springing up at the moment and while I wish I could just make an alt on another server real quick to test the waters and see what I like, the wait for a good time to make an alt or the 18 dollar transfer fee is really making me need to try to establish what I want from a roleplaying perspective before I start sinking too much time or effort in the wrong direction. I might try doing some roleplaying here on the forums first to get more of a feel of where I stand, at least for how canon the game story is to my character. I'm not sure where I'd post a basic character bio or if I could just start a non-canon IC thread in the Town Square or something, but thanks for all the kind words and support so far! I'm definitely looking forward to diving straight into whatever it is I do decide upon. Link to comment
PSDuckie Posted December 21, 2016 Share #7 Posted December 21, 2016 I was in the same boat you are, and what I ended up doing was retiring my old character and creating a new character with RP in mind. I hope that helps! Link to comment

There is a lot to consider when designing your character, but it seems like you are asking the right kinds of questions. You can always post in the character workshop for working out those details as well. Link to comment
douhneill Posted December 23, 2016 Author Share #9 Posted December 23, 2016 Well, it's been a couple days of thought and I think I'm going to invest the extra money into getting a character onto Balmung. Is it really just as simple as making a character, waiting 3 days, and doing the transfer? Also, where should I post the character profile I've come up with in order for me to start trying to find people to meet up with once I actually get in? (as a side note, I'm tempted to just get a friend to help me transfer some crystals and gil over from my old character to my new one just to make grinding the crafting classes a bit easier on the first run through, but I want to use the same name as the old character. I'm looking at the description on the Mog Station and if I name my new character something that's already a taken name on Balmung does that mean I get to use the name change for free or does that cost extra?) You made a good choice, my friend! To answer your questions, yep it's that simple. They just need to exist and you just have to wait the three days to transfer. If you decide to level or craft, you can transfer items and gil (up to 1-2mil I believe) along with your character. My advice is that if you might be an altaholic like some of us here, you can transfer a bunch of characters all in one for the same price, basically 8 for 1. You can post a profile on the Making Connections forums, where you can advertise your character and look for different types of roleplay. You can also make a wiki, you can find guides on how to here (amongst other things). Regarding the name, if there is already a character that exists with the name on the server you're transferring to, you are offered a free name change. Hope this helps! See you on Balmung! Oh, that's a lot more convenient than I assumed! I'll just name my new character after someone I find here on the forums and I can spend the next couple days making connections so I have somewhere to start off once I move in, and also make a couple other character ideas I've been considering as well. I'll see you when I get there! Link to comment
