Don't be scared!

I think the suggestion on meeting on Skype might be the best option ATM, since beta time is intermittent, at best. There's also the problem that not everyone will be able to access the beta until phase 4.

In anycase, I'm Epikphailz on Skype, if you all decide to go that route!

*Nods* That makes sense. And it might put people more at ease. I've never used skype but I'm willing to give it a try. Still not sure what or how I would do it though. I've never done anything like this. Any suggestions?

Well if we RP over Skype, it would be much like an IM to IM kinda thing. Where someone posts something, then other people post reactions. Unlike forum RP (another type of Play by Post or PbP), IM RPs are faster, less detailed, and focus more on dialogue and character interaction than describing settings and emotions. Thus, replies tend to be shorter, instead of the paragraph posts you might see in a forum RP. This makes IM RP a great way to test out a character personality - throwing darts at the metaphorical wall until something you like sticks.

A good way to start would be to come up with a general setting first, and let your characters fit into the setting.

If you want, I can help set up the group. Xenedra also has experience in this, so you can ask her for advice as well.

I do want! But I'll have to contact you tomorrow. Too tired right now. Going to bed. Night all!

Don't worry man, I'm the same way. Especially with Eva - that girl is scary. I mean have you read her stuff? Holy crap. Stop intimating me with your awesomeness, damn it!

 Thank you?!

I've heard this (or some variant of it) now quite a few times! It bugs me sometimes that I might miss out on making new friends because of this. I like newer RPers and love hearing all of the ideas they bring to the table. All I can say is please please please please don't feel intimidated by me or anyone else here!!! I do a lot of writing both for work and play, but there was a time in a little MUD called GemStone III (now GemStone IV apparently) that I like to think was not that long ago (>.>) where I was the newbie and my jaw sat perched on the floor in awe at witnessing some of the amazing interactions and stories that other characters there had woven together.

All I can really say is stick with it, don't be afraid to ask questions or to explore your own writing, or art, or whatever you aspire towards. And try not to compare yourself to others too much. Instead, strive to create a unique and wonderful character and then be that character and own everything about him or her. The rest will eventually come naturally!

It's often those first few steps that are the hardest. Or as an extremely wise woman once said to me, "90% of life is just showing up."

Alright peoples! Listen up!

There's a plan in the works. A glorious, magical plan that will act as the ultimate stepping stone to our success. A stepping stone that will take us to the very mountain tops so that we may witness as the gods themselves weep for not having come up with it first. We will the proceed stick our tongues out at those thunderous skies and laugh as we dance in their sorrow!

In other words were going to do an open rp thing on Skype.

It'll open to anyone and everyone. The story itself is still in the works but be rest assured that it will Not be lore heavy. You don't have to know everything about Eorzea to participate - just be sure to know which end of a Chocobo is the front and you'll be good.

Tyronis has been super awesome and even offered to help me set the whole thing up which I greatly appreciate.

In his own words this will simply be a 'trial run.' It's not serious, it's not a big deal, and you won't be black listed if you make a mistake. This is just for fun and maybe even a little practice, a way to get your feet wet if you've never rp'd before.

I've never rp'd on Skype so it'll be a new experience for me too!

If you have any comments, or opinions, or just want to chime in a thought then please reply. If you think this is the stupidest idea ever then...uh *insert witty and tasteful comeback here*

I'd like to make it happen the following weekend (not this one) though that's still up in the air.

Any thoughts?

I am a new player and new to Final Fantasy in general. I have had a bit of a hard time feeling like I belong in this group. The way I RP seems to be different from most people here and some of made me feel like the way I do it is wrong, my artwork wasn't well received, and often I am afraid my opinion will be ridiculed because I see others that are. There also seemed to be a lot of pointless bickering and arguing. Not sure if anyone noticed but I haven't really contributed much lately, however I did when I first joined.

However, I have also made some friends. So I decided to get over my fear and post my concerns so that hopefully this can be remedied. Overall people are friendly and probably didn't even realize that they can seem condescending to someone new and sensitive.

Never be afraid to share you're opinion because you'll never be alone in it. At least that's what I tell myself. We may all be our own unique, special snowflake but we're still made of the same stuff. Somewhere in the world you can always be assured that someone is thinking or feeling the same thing you are right now.

And, I actually like your pic. Unfortunately the usual response to drawing on the internet is 'if it's not Photoshop I'm not looking at it.' Which sucks I know. But don't stop sketching! You should be proud of it! It looks just as good as anything I've ever done and you didn't have to cover it up with paint and shading effects to make it that way!

Just to clarify my profile pic is not my sketch. It was beautifully done by Nya.

I know, I'm talking about the other one.

I would be interested in participating in a Skype RP.

Oh god shes back *hides*

Yeah, anyone who is interested in the Skype RP, please PM me your Skype usernames and I'd be happy to arrange the group for you all and even come up with a few easy scenarios for you all to RP in to see how your character would react within those settings.

Not a bad idea. I'll be up for it when I've got time.

Oh man, I just saw this thread.

This is a solid topic and I'm glad that someone posted it.  RP communities can seem like these dense, tangled things to outsiders.  Getting involved with them after they've already become so well established can be incredibly difficult, and leave people feeling left out in the cold. Someone in this thread likened it to getting a new job and I feel that's really true.  It can be nervewracking and stressful, which is usually the opposite of what someone is looking for when they're gaming.

But little things, like this especially, can really make a difference.  I'll admit: I'm hesitant to join a legacy server because of that initial barrier of entry.  That's why I sought this website out -- to sort of ease the transitional period and establish a firm idea of the community before the game officially launches.

So, bravo to you guys for doing this!  I'd be happy to come along to the skype thing as well.  My account is: bathroom.bard (with the period and everything.  How obnoxious, right?) and I really look forward to getting to know folks here.  If there's one thing I've missed about FFXI more than anything else, it was the community and sense of belonging that it fostered.  I look forward to recreating that same feeling with you folks.

I will admit, I have been mostly active since November when 1.0 shut down, but even today I am still really intimidated by a lot of users here. ;n;  I'm not really sure why... everyone has been more than kind to me! I still haven't really RPed much with anyone. Nothing super heavy, I guess? I'm still really looking forward to doing it in-game, but kind of terrified at the same time.

But yes...just kind of chiming in and uh. ... Something.

... Hi.

Don't worry man, I'm the same way. Especially with Eva - that girl is scary. I mean have you read her stuff? Holy crap. Stop intimating me with your awesomeness, damn it! And that goes for the rest of you too! *glares*

But no worries! I've read your posts and I'm sure you'll be great to rp with! Don't be afraid to look me up! Or just message and we can do something on Skype...though I'm still trying to figure that out. I'm pretty incompetent with a computer when it involves anything beyond video games. Steam? No problem. Facebook? God help us all.

Ooh just read your wiki page. I really like it. Your character is interesting! He reminds me of a bunny

Thank you! Haha. I'd really be interested in your idea of a get-together. I've kind of RPed a little with a couple people in some out-of-game methods (emails and what not, but still XIV), but I really want to dive into this community and break my shyness. When it comes to bigger groups, that's when I get terrified.

If you'd like to add my skype, that'd be cool too! I'm still kind of a shy birdy. It's "eirirhea". And I have steam! Haha. My steam is "CuriousAlice"

I've never used skype before. Is that not typing?

...bringing me to my next big question that seems great to post here!

How common is roleplaying through voice chatting and mics in game? I'm pretty attached to my keyboard (even for ooc).

???

(p.s. I must read what Eva has written!) I can't wait to start reading all the stories about. :)

I've tried sending requests to everyone who's posted their usernames on this thread! Please send me a PM if I missed you!

@Cosette:

Skype is an audio communication program! But in this case, we use it to RP via chat and typing!

Aww don't sulk Eva! What's your Skype username!!?!??!!?

Also, Stalkingrike, what problems are you having with Skype? I'm not entirely a computer wiz myself though.

We just tried out the whole Skype Chat RP, and it seemed to work out nicely, so we will have another one soon, hopefully with more people included! If we have too many, I can split the group up and create scenarios for them! Or give them all the same scenario and see how they branch off from each other!
