Long time RPer new to MMO RP

Hey everyone, nice to meet you!

 

MMORPG background

I've played a handful of MMOs for various stints of time but eventually it becomes a grind, or I don't have anyone to play with, or so on.  FFXIV is the first MMO I've played where I haven't run into any of the standard issues and I'm excited to continue playing for a long time to come!

 

RP experience

I've been RPing off and on for well over 10 years,  starting way back in yahoo chatrooms, then to forum-based and now here I am ready to start MMO RPing. I consider myself pretty adept at stepping into the shoes of a character but with a new character there's always a bit of growing pains. I have never RP'd in an MMO before, though I have gone through some games thinking about the type of character the MC is (in games with character creation at least) and how they would go about things etc. 

 

Character ideas/info

I've only got the one character so far,  and he's not entirely fleshed out yet.  S'yhan Tia my lvl 55 Miqo'te Paladin.  I'm not sure what to do with him mostly, I have some history information but that's about it so far. 

 

How did you learn about the coalition?

Reddit. I'm in the FFXIV subreddit and I searched for RP information and the RPC popped up!

 

What kind of a role-player are you aiming to be? (e.g. Light, medium, or heavy)
Ideally heavy but I'll likely be starting light-medium until I get more of a handle on the character.  Not to mention life doesn't always facilitate the fun things. 

 

 

Anything from real life you're comfortable with sharing? (Work, school, hobbies, etc.)

I work in a 24/7 operation so it's not unusual for me to work varying hours day to day, or having to cover odd hours etc, it unfortunately makes planning big things difficult.  Aside from that I am re-learning to draw (unfortunately I let myself quit at one point and it's been quite a battle trying to pick it back up again) aside from that I have recently learned how to skateboard!

I’ve never done forum based RP so I can’t imagine the difference of having visuals there, like.. I don’t know how I’d react if I couldn’t use something as a visual aid. But hopefully you’ll get adjusted in no time!

One of the great things about the lore here is it’s pretty open. You don’t need  S’yahn completely fleshed out before starting to RP or making any connections, either~ Heck, some of the people you come across might give you some ideas about what you wanna do and which direction to head in! We’re all here to help

Completely understand this! I didn’t even wanna RP until I got my tarot cards linear to their FFXIV counterparts. Now I use them all the time  — and of course, sometimes life just does the whole “no” thing and just doesn’t want us to have any fun. I work from home and get bratty when I actually have to focus on my other monitor and literally do my job instead of the FATE or whatever I’m trying to do in FFXIV on my other monitor

These all sound very cool! It sounds like you like drawing so it’s good to see you going back to it, even if it is a struggle to get reacquainted!

Hi Roach Rex! o/ I'm glad you're enjoying FFXIV I've been having a similar experience where level grinding doesn't feel like a grind. Here's hoping your RP experience in FFXIV is equally positive.

The hardest part so far has been incorporating emotes and having to type fast!  I did have a visual aid but it was a static picture.  The other thing is typing up smaller snippets vs long paragraphs it's definitely taking some getting used to!

I have gone to/participated in 2 rp events so far.  I'm mostly used to getting the basics together and then letting the rp flow tell me the rest but I'm not even 100% sure about like class/job stuff yet. (I am leaning towards free paladin/bsm combo more than anything but really not sure yet.) 

 

Yeah this week I've played at work (I've been working the weekend overnight shift so there's not really anyone here to walk in on me playin games.)  I really want to draw my character but I picked one of the more complicated armor sets as my base so... I'll get there >>

Thanks! Yeah the only thing is I get anxious about is duties bc I play tank. -nervous glances at healer-

I'm slowly working on being less shy in rp groups and just jumping in though it's kind of a catch-22.   I need to rp to learn more about my character,  but I need to know more about my character to feel comfortable rping! But I'll get it figured out eventually!

When I think forum RP, I just imagine it like.. this. All text. Clearly I’m wrong and just.. dumb!

 

Two events?! That’s more than I’ve been to all month  .. Did you have fun? What are your first impressions compared to forum RP? Even though you’re not 100%, I’m glad to hear you went with the flow! That can lead to some fun times, and I think it makes things just feel kinda natural. The rest will come, I promise!

 

I work off Amazon WorkSpaces from home so if it’s not super busy then I can play, but even then I’m pretty limited as to what I can do.. just in case we do get busy. So, no Roulettes for me (it’s taken me like two weeks to get my Dancer to 66 ._.).. I also have an obsession with seeing people’s art since I have zero skill in it myself so let us know when you get that done

I know the feeling! Getting to know more about the story and setting helps me a lot as well. I'll usually have some ideas I'd like to try early into a new MMO, but as I learn about the lore some ideas have to be abandoned while some can be improved.

You're not dumb, some things are hard to picture without experience. I felt the same when I first heard about Bulletin Board System video games.
