Mateus - Veteran Forum RPer Interested In FFXIV

Recommended Posts

Good Morning Everyone!

I’ll keep my introduction simple and quick but I hope to get to know some of you more throughly in due time.

I’ve chosen Darkstar as my alias but please feel free to call me Jon OOCly. I’m a life-long gamer and young professional in his late twenties. I’m a fan of all genres of games but amongst my favorite are single player RPGs.

FFXIV is a jump I’ve made fairly recently and it’s my first MMO (outside of the Destiny franchise if you could call it that). During quarantine so far I’ve replayed through FF12 and FF7 Remake and it just seemed like a natural jump to occupy my time. The game had always been in my peripherals but I’ve never picked up the sticks until now and I couldn’t be happier.

Of course all that to say that my MMO experience is limited and my experience role-playing in an MMO is non-existent. Thank you for all the guides and advice so far.

I do have role-playing experience however so don’t count me out. When I was growing up I was an avid forum role player, mostly on sites like Gaiaonline (ha - cringe worthy weeb memories are rushing back to me) but I also found some more sophisticated avenues in small forum sites both in original stories and on existing intellectual properties. Back then I identified as - what we called - a “Elite Literate” or “Advanced Literate” role-player. Posts would be entire novels onto themselves. I’m happy to say I’m not looking to relive that experience as much  as something more casual and light this time around.

My Main: I started an Au Ra in the Jenova server with no intention of RPing with him. At the time I just wanted to play the game through mostly OOC. Please free to add him: Animaus Darkstar. This was before I did some research and found that FFXIV has an extensive RP community. I don’t have a developed backstory or personality for him yet but it’s starting to form and I may move him over to Mateus or Balmung.

My Alt: Once I found out that RPing was a thing and did more research my imagination was ignited so I created a new character on the Mateus server: Remus Galvus. With Remy, I have a much more fleshed our backstory and character albeit I’m trying not to back him into any corners as I’m still learning the lore and setting. He’s a Hyur/Garlean whose ties to the Galvus line are mystery even to himself. Cynical and secretive, he’s a Limsa rogue living in hiding and running away from a past he doesn’t want to come to terms with through the visage of a petty criminal.

I’m looking for all types of RPs but again would like to keep things relatively light. I’m not against become a more medium/heavy RPer when and if I grow within a community though. PG13 is good and 18+ Is better but I will have to get to know you OOCly before diving into any ERP.

This was not as short and quick as I meant it but that’s the gist! Here are some final bullets/ questions:

  • I live in the East Coast. Right now I’m gaming pretty much all day every day. When quarantine ends I’ll be limited to in-game RPing to nights and weekends.
  • How far in the MSQ would you recommend a character go if the main objective is RPing?
  • There are a lot of guides talking about what role-playing is and the general guidelines and shared thoughts. Is there a guide with specifics or examples? Coming from a forum background it’s hard for me to visualize how RP is done in a chat. What chat channel? Emotes? Turn based?
  • Is there a place where I can just spectate or read people RPing without participating?

Thanks everyone for their time. I’m excited to dive in!

This is entirely up to you, but I would recommend getting at least to level 15+ and getting far enough in the MSQ to unlock teleportation so that you can RP in different areas and have a few outfit options. The further you get in game, the more of the lore and timeline you will understand (unless you're already caught up on your main), the more locations you will be able to access and RP in, and the more glamour options you will have. That being said, you can jump into RP at any point as soon as you're ready and comfortable.

I'm not sure there are any guides, but there's not a lot to it and there's no right or wrong way. Most people use /say and /em for RP. You can use /party and /tell if you or your partner would like more privacy or are having difficulty keeping up if the chat is busy. You can also use emotes to give some visuals for your RP posts.

Balmung Quicksand (Ul'dah Adventurer's Guild) and Pearl Lane outside of it are the hotspots for walk-up RP, if you want to lurk around there. I also recommend checking out some RP events! You can find many of them on the calendar here.
