I've literally never played a Final Fantasy game before

I've roleplayed everywhere. Everywhere. From SWTOR to ESO, from early 2000s fantasy chatrooms to LARP, from long forum threads to the gahdam bedroom. Yet FFXIV has always evaded me. Time after time, whenever I'd gotten bored with a game, I'd go searching for a new one, trying out every RP-able MMO under the sun, until there was only one left... FFXIV.

 

Anyway, I'm pretty excited to try out something completely new, where everything is gonna feel like a discovery. I've heard a lot of good about the game and the community, so it's about time I've tried it out. Not gonna lie though, things seem quite confusing, so I may need help.

 

For starters, Mateus is pretty much always locked from what I've seen. Where else do roleplayers congregate? Is it possible to temporarily phase from one world to another, kinda like some games do via grouping teleports?

Hello there, welcome!  Balmung and Mateus are the two big RP servers, and they are sometimes unlocked to server transfers and sometimes even new characters. However, being on those servers isn't necessary; it will just give you more RP free company (guild) options. The game does now allow you to visit any other server on the same data center, so you can enjoy plenty of RP as long as you make a character on any server on the Crystal Data Center.

Sometimes the server locks free up during different times of the day. For example, as I type this all of the servers are open for character creation. So if you have your heart set on Mateus or Balmung you could check back every so often to see if their status has changed.

 

That being said, Faye put it best in that the server visit option means you can always join RP events that are on your Data Center.
