Tagyr Posted August 18, 2010 Share #54 Posted August 18, 2010 In my old WoW guild we used to have a single 14 year old with us. The group kinda ragged him out quite a lot but he had fun. But suffice to say some discussion was overheard by his parents and they started to question what kinda guild he was in. Which I somewhat agree with, parents do need to take a closer look of what their children are doing. Oh, and pie is awesome. Though not American pie and it's sequals though... Link to comment
Gavin Posted August 18, 2010 Share #55 Posted August 18, 2010 I've had younger members in guilds before. Usually, one of their older relatives was already a member, and brought them in to the guild. For the most part, chat was kept pretty clean and profanity was at a minimum. From that perspective, as long as the kid could act mature enough, there was no problem at all. On the other hand, if a guild/linkshell/company didn't want to have to worry about the content of their conversations I could easily see why they wouldn't want a youngster there. I've seen mature kids, and grandparents. Overall, I think the individual determines maturity, not how old they are. Luckily, there is the RPC. There are so many different linkshells out there, everyone who wants should be able to find a place to belong. Even the little brats. Link to comment
Mycroft Posted August 18, 2010 Share #56 Posted August 18, 2010 I've known quite a lot of kids who actually behave while playing MMOs even more so if they like to RP, they were immature in real life, but knew not to cause drama online as it would hurt a lot more than it would do good.. It might be because I have faith in my students, but never the less. I believe that in the end, individuality should be taken into consideration, that means a lot of work of processing applications, but hey hard work pays. Instead I say let people join, if they turn out to be younger than 18, meaning that they lied their way in, base your on whether to kick them or not on their behaviour up to that point. Lying is bad btw.. Very much so. Link to comment

I agree with that, I know plenty of very mature people under 18, but as I've said, at least with BF, it doesn't really have anything to do with maturity, but rather with not wanting to cencur the chat. Of course if people tell us they're 18, and really are not, and then in general act maturely, there's no way for us to check, right? Link to comment
Con One Posted August 18, 2010 Share #58 Posted August 18, 2010 Is it really so hard to personally travel around the country and verify each individual guild member? You all sound lazy. Tsk tsk. Link to comment
Kashemia Posted August 18, 2010 Share #59 Posted August 18, 2010 The country? Try the globe So far we, we have members from 2 continents and a possible application from a 3rd. But you're right, it is sort of unprofessional of us. Link to comment
Mycroft Posted August 19, 2010 Share #60 Posted August 19, 2010 I say we just stop accepting people, that would solve most problems.. Except maybe if your LS has very few members. Link to comment
Len Posted August 19, 2010 Share #61 Posted August 19, 2010 Well it can be impossible to tell at times My personality and habits haven't changed at all since from when I was young until now So kids who are naturally mature or smart can pull off a 30 year old easily Especially if you notice how easy it is to copy peoples habits or traits Like families where everyone speaks loud naturally as habit picked up Then again if I was still a kid now I would probably add 10 years and act respectably while having fun so this may be pointless. As far as continents are concerned we have Asia Europe America and even Africa , maybe Antarctica too .. Even isolated scientists in the antarctic might want to feel the joy of this game. My rule would be no ERP and kids are fine with me , old people , young people Aliens too unless they invading our planet or something like that Anyways the methods required to weed out little children are tough I played WoW for sometime and this is something I found funny A few people I knew were totally out of age 18yr old told everyone his 32 27yr old said he was a she age 16 12yr old said his 27 51yr old said his 10 ( not sure how he can even play at that old age , but oh well ) Age is all relative to experience and natural maturity If everyone matured at the same rate it would be good for scientists who like to organise all the logic You can expect all the people you know online to be 10 years younger or older than they say or pretend to be But since this an RP group of people my IC age should be all that matters , but who knows. Shamadconde Posted August 19, 2010 Share #65 Posted August 19, 2010 Back in the day, when I was young, I was picking up my copy of FFVIII at Gamestop. There was an old granny who was doing the same thing and she told me she had played all the Final Fantasies. Age matters not. Link to comment
blueblacksky Posted August 19, 2010 Share #66 Posted August 19, 2010 But you're right, it is sort of unprofessional of us. I guess we could mandate everyone post a picture of themselves holding some sort of identification close enough to the camera for people to read the age. Link to comment
Shamadconde Posted August 19, 2010 Share #67 Posted August 19, 2010 That could be easily photoshopped. It would have to webcammed. Link to comment
Eva Posted August 20, 2010 Share #68 Posted August 20, 2010 Even webcammed there's about a thousand holes that can be poked into that glass such that it wouldn't hold water. Fake ID's and such just for starters. I mean, if a linkshell is hardcore enough about its rules to be going to such lengths to verify its members' ages... I dunno... Trust issues...? I think it would be enough for most any linkshell to set the rule during the application process that the applicant must be 18+ (or 16+ or whatever the rule is for that particular group). If an angry parent comes along than the way I see it the linkshell community can't be held liable if they falsified their information. Just ban them from the group going forward if it's an issue. Also I'm not sure I would want anyone knowing my RL name and address though, and that info is usually contained on most ID's. Maybe it's just me... Link to comment

Richter Posted August 20, 2010 Share #71 Posted August 20, 2010 I must be an exception in regards to the 18+ rule, as my parents are ambivalent about what I do online in most cases. Because they don't consider RP guilds to be that much of an issue (then again, we are the type to go to medieval fairs, so we esteem getting in-character rather highly), and considering that I'm a fairly mature person already, I find it somewhat irritating that I couldn't, say, apply to join a guild such as T.A.L.E. (which I would love to join) or the Stormguard. It can be a real nuisance, but I can also see the benefit of the safety net it provides against liability issues. Link to comment

I think your response right there shows a lot of promise in the under 18 club. Just because there's that restriction doesn't mean we still can't roleplay together outside the guilds Link to comment
