sindurion Posted September 19, 2013 Share #1 Posted September 19, 2013 So guys! Something odd happened today, I was walking around IC on my Keeper Miqo'te, when I came across an RPer with the exact same forename as mine for his Keeper! I know this will happen time to time but I was so taken aback, I just went OOC and walked away. But I'm curious, how on earth would this be handled ICly? And do you think there would be any sore feeling OOC for two people sharing the same forename? Link to comment
shotgunbadger Posted September 19, 2013 Share #2 Posted September 19, 2013 I figure it's like a guy named Ralph meeting another guy named Ralph, kinda funny and can sometimes cause confusion but if both of you stuck to traditional rules and all you have some odds of winding up hitting the same name. Zyrusticae Posted September 19, 2013 Share #3 Posted September 19, 2013 Isn't it kind of the same thing as two people who have the same name IRL? I mean, think about how many people share the first name 'Michael' or 'Dave'... Link to comment

It is pretty much this as a whole, I admit I was rather feeling blocked creatively for names and I turned to the generator for inspiration thinking I'd be one of the very few RPers terrible with coming up named within those boundaries, and well this happened! Xha'li Moui Posted September 20, 2013 Share #5 Posted September 20, 2013 I know theres a Xha'ir Moui on Balamung, and if I ever meet him ICly it'll probably have to be a grandmothers-aunts-cousins-nices-nephews-cousin-twice-removed type deal. Link to comment
Fulcrum Posted September 20, 2013 Share #6 Posted September 20, 2013 Isn't it kind of the same thing as two people who have the same name IRL? I mean, think about how many people share the first name 'Michael' or 'Dave'... Well, it kind of depends on the situation. For females, yes, that's much like our regular world, however due to the naming scheme used for males...that gets interesting. For someone to have their mother have the same name, and be born in the same order (beyond one or two), with that would be a bit odd. Link to comment
Rinh Hallani Posted September 20, 2013 Share #7 Posted September 20, 2013 I've already run into another Rinh, d'oh! I just assume it's a common name, like Rachel or something. As for males, well, the same applies. Your mothers just both had common names too. I wouldn't worry about it too much myself but that's just me. Link to comment
Norna Posted September 22, 2013 Share #8 Posted September 22, 2013 It is also worth pointing out that names that go in the family is kind of a big thing for Keepers, so family names are from before the ice crossing, and it would make sense that in a society that puts such emphasis on names would repeat the given names of distinguished individuals (either to honor or as a form of vainglory), so if there was some really famous individual named Ehri Rohl, for example, I would expect the Rohl family to use the Ehri name after her death, and families who have yet to distinguish themselves at the same level might name a few of their children Ehri. At least that's my head-canon when I meet Miqo'te with similar or same names. Come to think of it, if it wasn't for the amnesia, there would probably be lots of five-to-one-year-olds running around with WoL names. Link to comment
