Altitis Acquired Posted January 22, 2015 Share #1 Posted January 22, 2015 So I have a confession to make. I have set my eyes on the Au Ra. I know for sure that I will have my main be an Au Ra whenever they are available. Whether I will make an entirely new character or if I will change one of my current toons has yet to be decided though, but it is 100% sure that I will make an Au Ra my main! This has me grown restless though. I've always liked to interchange between alts, but mostly had 1 main that I always return to. But now knowing that I will change my main, I keep changing my alts... and I feel like it has gone to the point of being very disruptive to those I RP with, because I can't settle with one character and RP. I feel like I can't do any long-term RP either, because I know that as soon I can be an Au Ra, I will be an Au Ra, and then the RP I've done beforehand will most likely be neglected. So I can't commit to one toon, I can't commit to any RP - but I still WANT to RP! It's frustrating. And if it is frustrating to me, I'm sure it is also frustrating to those around me I RP with (though they are so sweet and kind that they won't admit it). My name is theincubuslord... and I have altitis. I need to change my attitude towards alts... my alt-itude, if you will. Any suggestions? Does any of you suffer from the same? Link to comment
Maril Posted January 22, 2015 Share #2 Posted January 22, 2015 If I were you, I would continue as normal until we know the launch date, then I would look into moving your now-main onto an alt-toon so that when you transform your now-main into an Au Ra, you can easily use the alt-toon to wrap up the RP that you want to phase yourself out of because you wont have the time/will to maintain both characters with the same level of involvement. And simply allow yourself to take the time needed to get things sorted That's of course assuming you wont continue with the same character on your au ra. I have quite a few alts myself and my secondary alt is the only one I get involved in long term plots/storyarchs because I know I'm able to manage both. So I understand the whole thing with feeling like things can be a bit pointless, as my third alt can't ever really get involved in too much - But at the same time she can have a big effect on the characters around her. The fact that she is also a rare appearance gives the RP a different touch as well as you'll always be able to ask people what they've been up to since last and I find I have to find more reasons as to why she's not always around and that. For me as well though, it's kind of split a little between "types" of RP, my main is very prone to getting involved in srs bisniss where as my alts do better in social/bar-type RP. So when I get tired of all the serious, I usually log over to one of them. That said my third alt is likely going to get sacked/retired in favor of an au ra, all depending on what kind of lore they're served up with. 1 Link to comment
C'kayah Polaali Posted January 22, 2015 Share #3 Posted January 22, 2015 As far as the alts go, I don't really see a problem. People come and go in our lives all the time in real life. It's relatively rare for someone to appear in our lives and then stick around for an extended time after that. For the most part, we'll meet someone (some random person you talk to at the coffee shop; the UPS delivery guy; the girl at the sports bar sitting next to you while you're watching the game; etc), interact with them, and then move on. With rapidly changing alts, it's the same thing. People might wonder "Whatever happened to Bob...?", but they'll move on if you stop playing the alt. What to do about your main changing is a little different, of course. It's tough to show up one day and say "Hi, I'm an Au Ra, now!", and have an explanation for that. A lot of people don't consider fantasia to be canon, ICly, so it's problematic to just use that as an excuse. Personally, if I were you I'd just RP with my main and then, when I switched to Au Ra, I'd have my main be a different person. I'd explain OOCly to my friends what was going on, then come up with some little handwavey thing to close out my old main's story: Bob got rich doing whatever it was he did down there in Copperbell, and he retired to a nice little ranch house in Thanalan. This is Joe the Au Ra, he just arrived in town... 1 Link to comment
Altitis Acquired Posted January 22, 2015 Author Share #4 Posted January 22, 2015 Thanks for your replies so far guys. Just want to point out, my Au Ra will NOT ICly be one of my current characters. He will be an all-together new person ICly. OOCly I might fantasia/name-change a toon I already have, but he will be his own character. :3 1 Link to comment
Lost River Posted January 22, 2015 Share #5 Posted January 22, 2015 I've fantasia'd/name changed a character before. Its how I don't lose my levels if I want my character to have the same classes; I have many characters, each with a purpose. So technically not spreading myself thin when I have them focused instead of an all "I do -everything-. Only at cap do I start to level up secondary professions and such for all my characters. It keeps me doing something and keeps it fresh. Link to comment
