The greying of the MMO and what does it mean for RP players?
Hyrist replied to hypatiala's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Which is more than fine by me. Honestly I prefer to have some unavoidable attacks there. I disagree with the implication that FFXIV in particular is all about who can do damage fast enough. There's plenty of avoidable, telegraphed attacks in the game. And honestly, compared to games like Tera and Guild Wars 2, the system feels more solid to me. In action combat MMOs I feel the burn out a lot quicker. Even that FFXIV and games like it are slower paced, they're appropriately paced. There is a pacing in there that keeps fights going and engaging even multiple runs in, where in a faster paced, action MMO it feels like it would lend itself better to, well honestly, console games. Even with FFXIV I feel better with a gamepad in my hand than with key-binds and a gaming mouse. Sure, I preform better with such things on games like Guild Wars 2 but the result is a more stressful experience for ultimately no additional return on enjoyment. But this has nothing to do with the aging of gamers and more to do with simply preferring a different playstyle. You can make heated accusations of 'boring' or 'dull', but these are ultimately subjective. MMOs will always and forever be about appealing to a niche, and that niche is not the same from game to game, nor should it be reflective on the game's quality what particular appeal it is leaning towards - but rather that it does so effectively. However, more to the subject of the thread: Roleplayers will decide on an individual level what sort of games appeal to them - not on a culture based level. Action MMOs, Traditional MMOs, all of it is irrelevant, really. If someone is in love with the story and lore of a game, and has a penchant for roleplaying there will be some. -
Corvus Barbeque, Bazaar, and Benefit (planning)

I've only three questions to ask. Where's the food? Where's the Drink? And who's bed am I crashing in once all is said and done? 8-) -
Woot, finally got some screenshots done of my characters for Balmung and Rping. The major feature in my roleplaying will be the Brothers Verus. Click on the spoiler below for pictures!

How does one go about submitting an entry? I've been seriously wanting to gather my thoughts together on all this, and most defiantly have a story of my own to tell, though my screenshots are rather lacking. (The reason being part of the story itself, actually.)

That entirely depends on each individual Melee, right? Positioning around monsters in fights is going to differ monster to monster, fight to fight. However, between players, you can micro movements together or play off one another in as you move around. Something along the lines of a Chocobo or NPC? Not so much co-ordination can be done. It's subjective, it's a matter of where do you feel comfortable? For me, where they are is comfortable, anything larger likely will not be considering, as we've already stated, it levitates off the ground somewhat. If they get any larger we either lift it further above the players to compensate, worsening the viewpoint issue to FFXI degrees, or you bring them closer to the ground, which, in Ifrit's case could cause clipping into it. Is it game-breaking? No, of course not. I already acknowledge that if the change was made, I would deal with it. But we're talking matters of preference here, and I was stating how my viewpoint simply differs from yours. In my view there is no right or wrong answer here. I know I would feel uncomfortable with them larger than they are, and that's about all I can speak for. Given the history of Final Fantasy beasts being this gigantic, world changing force which summoners could call upon for aid, I can understand the desires for having something of even a slightly larger side. But I feel as if that context is covered thanks to the Free Company primal system. On an individual summoner in a large culture of summoners viewpoint - I feel as if the smaller, more personal egis fit the environment, as well as my personal preferences, much better. We'll see how things pan out once everyone settles into the game and we get a better idea how everything plays out with Arcanist/Scholar/Summoner start fitting in. Who knows? After playing with them for a while, either you, I, or both of us might change our minds. It would be interesting to see this very conversation reversed after gameplay is experienced.

I understand the request, even the fact that you feel that it may be some sort of compromise or reasonable request to ask for a pet that is, essentially, equal in size of the player. But perhaps, and this may be bad expression on my part and I am sorry for it, what is not being relayed here is that with the existence of your pet, you've essentially doubled the size of your own avatar. Also, keep in mind, the picture being used for reference is not, in the least bit, accounting for perspective change in the video. The Ifrit is actually closer to 2/3rds the size of the Hume Male, rather than half which is being inferred here. Likewise, the enlarge picture used as refrence is actually closer to the red version implied rather than the green, which is actually more accurate to the real avatar. To display how the camrea angle and distance is skewing the view of the players, we must first reanalyze the appearance of Ifrit Egi during its introduction. In the video, from 0:58, to 1:03 you can pause it at brief intervals in which the angle the Egi can seem much larger to much smaller depending on the angle of view and the position it is. So let's get another reference. First, the picture of each race of Summoners, as listed in the Blog. (View from the front for additional reference. ) Then, let's take a screencap of the , which directly overlays the Size of the Titan Egi to a Roe. (at 4:53 you can verify that even with the Roe in front, Titan is still roughly half its size.) Comparing a Roe to a Hyur in the previous transposed images, you get roughly 2/3rds the size of the Hyur - which, in my viewpoint, is a fair size for the Egi's to be. All and all I'm satisfied with this size reference. I do not feel as if summons need to be as large as its casters.

Stating this as a claim of fact is inaccurate, I can attest to this personally as it is is my own personal preference that these do become a matter of obstruction while I am playing another class. I can affirm this preference of mine both in FFXI and Aion, having my camera obscured by a rather large creature (Be it Shiva's or Garuda's Posterior or the rather large higher grade elemental from Aion.) I found myself having to stop and re-position my camera on more than a few occasions for each game. But as someone has said, this impression is subjective. You prefer them larger, and they do not bother you. That is fine. It is your recommendation to make for the developers and if they decide to go with it, it will simply be something I will have to abide by. But I've listed my concerns as an individual and I'll stand by them. A personal opinion isn't something that needs to be discredited for the sake of advancing one's own agenda. If the sizes get larger and are in my way as a Dragoon I will deal with it. However, as a Summoner, if they are enlarged I will be self-conscious of the change, rather than enjoying of it, as I know how I would feel in the melee position. Granted, this is me inferring someone else feelings - but the uneasiness will be there regardless. If it becomes too obtuse it may very well shy me away from the class entirely.

I happen to be fine with the sizes they are currently. Seeing them more up close now, I'm not exactly for the enlargement. As someone who has to fluctuate around the enemy frequently, I do not want to have to worry about my vision obstructed by something large and floating around. The request for larger size just reminds me constantly of Yoda. "Judge me by my size, do you?" Comes to the forefront of my mind and it's all that's where it begins and ends. It feels like a confidence issue, and there's really no way to separate it away in this case. The truth of the matter is, beyond the initial impression all I'm really going to be caring about is my performance, not how flashy my character works. I don't want to be unwanted because visuals were prioritized over performances, or that I'm avoided because my summon seems more obtuse to the melee/tank in the thick of the fight. So that's where my priorities lie with the Egis right now. I like their design, and care more about their impact in the fight to the size they have. I'd rather them the size they are now, functional and non-interfering, then increase their size and have them become cumbersome.

Thank you all for your warm welcomes! I'm reading over some of the guides and FAQ's to try to get my fooding, but am not exactly sure how I approach a link-shell to start with (though I think first and foremost getting a pearl to Intermission may be a good starting block once the beta opens up once more.) All and all still trying to get my bearings. Wondering if I should hop into the Town Swear and start a thread of the boat Eric is coming in on. (A boat coming in from 'far off shores' as there's not much explanation as to where all the adventurers are coming from.) Might be a good way to start things out and flush out some initial quirks of the character. Beyond that, I'll be figuring out where to go and who to sign up with, if they'll take me. Looking forward to having a lot of fun and heart-felt moments.

:tonberry: Introduction: Hello everyone, my name is John - Also known as Hyrist, also known as Kalar Meadia or Tale Feather in various roleplay and gaming groups. (Hyrist is the one I'm primarily known for in the FF Community, however.) I'm a long time avid Role-player and fan of the Final Fantasy series. However, I am brand new to the community as well as the MMO side of the RPG communities. I have an established character on Excalibur that I have used during 1.0, but not for role-playing purposes. However I've always considered the prospect of combining my hobbies of roleplaying and gaming and A Ream Reborn has become the strongest temptation I have ever done so - a temptation that actually tugged at me back in the 1.xx days but, due to long time friends playing on a Non-RP server, I have suppressed. Thanks to the perks of a Legacy Account, and having gotten a preview of how lovely the community here is thanks to Nel's "I Remember" series, I can no longer resist the temptation to join in! Although, I do admit to being a bit nervous (ok, I'm downright shaking in my boots ^^; ). However I'm also very excited about getting my feet wet in the community and hopefully get the courage to dive right in. MMORPG background: FFXI was where I got my start in MMORPGs, and it has thus far been my longest lasting subscription, though a bit rocky. I have since played Aion, SWTOR, Guild Wars 2, a bit of Ragnarok Online and of course the FFXIV version 1.xx. Having played Final Fantasies since childhood I seem to find the most home in its environments, however, and am more then happy to soon be calling Eorzea my home once again. RP experience: That all said, my roleplaying experience dwarfs my MMO experience, having gotten into roleplaying at age 13 (Read, I turn Thirty September 1st 2013). I have a long history of plots, subplots and reference materiel that runs down the line of plots I made years and years ago, and it follows with me to this day. I began my stint in various small roleplay chat groups before finding the Yahoo Chat roleplay pages, which entertained me for a few years before I started realizing my posts were getting fairly lengthy (in both actual type made and time consumed.) So I migrated from Yahoo Chat to Yahoo groups, which eventually shifted over to MSN groups before I was introduce to Gaia Online about Ten years ago (Back when it was called Go-Gaia), which has been my primary source for Role-playing since. However, between working two jobs, and starting to grow a distaste for some of the trends taking hold among the prominent role-players in Gaia, I've let Roleplaying fall off of late. Character ideas/info: Oh if I let myself I would go on and on about this. To be honest I'm rather open-ended as to my ideas going forward with roleplaying. Though I've a lot of experience under my belt, I'm not looking for anything earth-shattering. I enjoy a good personal roleplay. Be it friendship, romance, intrigue, politics, and exploring the concepts of faith, deception, and human(oid) flaws and frailties. On Excalibur, my primary character there Lin Celestine (I swear, just a coincidence, Nel! ^^; ) has always been a bit random. She has struggled to balance her girlish nature with an inner seriousness and ferociousness that comes with her Dragoon Training and heritage. Even if not a part of roleplaying servers I like to explore the story on how she matures and is effected by her survival of the Calamity and her movement into the future. On Balmung, I intend on creating a new character taking a different approach. The character's name will be Eric Verus, and will be a bit of an experiment. Eric is an earnest man and an intelectual who struggles to make himself more than he currently is. While talented in the ways of magic, he begrudges his frail body's limitations and endeavors to make his mark upon the world in spite of his history of illness. He estranges his family of accomplished warriors of a far off land to join the adventurer's Guild in Limsa and study the ways of an Arcanist. How did you learn about the coalition? I've been aware of the RPC since Beta of 1.xx, but shyed away from it as I already had ongoing roleplays in other locations and wanted to not overfill my plate, so to speak. Additionally, launch time for FFXIV was a rather difficult time for me in my life so I was not on the game very much at the time. It's been actually thanks to Nel Celestine's video series "I Remember" that my interests have been piqued once again and am feeling that urge to loose myself in a lush world of fantasy - and what a beautiful world Eaorzea has been turning out to be having bee here for the entirety of Beta. I'm excited to see how I can take my experiences in roleplaying and expand my immersion into it. What kind of a role-player are you aiming to be? Light, medium, or heavy? I quite honestly have no clue. Aside from the fact that my friends and guild still exist on Excalibur, there is also the fact that I've never really roleplayed in an MMO before. I don't know how it's done, I don't know what's expected of me once inside. It's all very new and, quite honestly, intimidating to me. Depending on how it goes it might just pull Lin out of Excalibur, though I loath to leave my friends there (a few of which I've known for seven years or so.) At this point I am just playing it by ear. Anything from real life you're comfortable with sharing? (Work, school, hobbies, etc) I am an open book, so I'm sure my entire life's history will come to light in time. That said, I don't feel in a rush to simply spill it all over in my introductory post. I work two jobs, and am still struggling going on three years after a seven year relationship that broke me both emotionally and financially. Roleplaying has always sort of been my solace in life when things get down. I'm sure I'll share more of it as I get to know everyone. I'm looking forward to getting to know you all as well! Thanks for reading and here's to the start of a bright and long future with the RPC!
