  1. Wow, these are some very helpful replies... Thanks so much everyone! I appreciate it, I'm getting a much better idea of what to do now. I still have a few more questions if you guys don't mind! m(_ _)m 1. What's the best way to respond if someone meta-games? 2. For planned RP sessions, I've seen some of you said they're usually just simple "Let's go x and do y," but how exactly are more storyline RP scenes planned out? 3. This isn't so much my concern, but something I would like some clarification on. If someone plays a character who is inept at combat, are they likely to purposely perform poorly in-game? I've heard stories about this happening, but I always figured it was a rare thing. Thoughts? 4. How are spells like Raise and the like treated in RP? This is a pretty broad question I know, but if someone's character gets K.O.'d in like RP combat, I wouldn't want to do something that's immersion breaking and ruins it for someone. (Optional) 5. What is your characters sleeping posture like?
  2. Well, now that I get to have convenient break from power-leveling thanks to good ol' Error 3102, I figured now would be chance to ask the RP vets on this site a few very entry-level questions. I've been doing a lot of reading up on the do's and don'ts of RP, but I'm still kind of unsure as to what RP um... looks like. Like, in-game. ...Okay, I'm getting kind of embarrassed just from writing this so I'm just going to list my questions and go drink a bottle of wine. 1. What chat channels do most RPers constantly use? Say/Party/Tell? Or do most people switch it up depending on where they are and/or who they are with? 2. How are custom emotes used? Are they used to express a simple action (i.e.: Nald'thal looks down upon Uldah.), or do people tend to be more wordy and reveal inner thoughts (i.e.: Nald'thal looks down upon Uldah, wondering where all the puny people went. Surely the city was full just moments ago!)? 3. Exactly how often are emotes used? Are they more scarce in a simple conversation between friends, and seen more in like, a scene... or something? 4. Is it commonplace for RP to be planned, or is 'freestyle' RP more popular? 5. How does one with a crippling sense of inadequacy find people to RP with? (Optional) 6. Does your character prefer sweet, sour or spicy food?
  3. I have this problem too. First real issue for me so far, which considering it's only Beta, isn't too big a deal. I guess this just gives me an excuse to play Tales of Xillia.
  4. While it's not super relevant to this thread, and I posted it in that other server discussion thread as well... the 4chan community is not going to Gilgamesh. There will be people on Gilgamesh that happen to go on 4chan as individuals, but there is no organized movement on 4chan to play as a group on Gilgamesh. Reddit is going to Gilgamesh though (which is probably WHY 4chan isn't going there), and since I find them far less tolerable than 4chan, that ended up being my deal breaker. As for being on topic - I'm new to FFXIV and decided to roll on Balmung, despite my initial aversion to Legacy servers. And as someone who is new to RP, I don't understand the mentality of breaking up what is already a small community, not to mention a community that is usually targeted by griefers. Strength in numbers, right? These are just my uneducated opinions though...
  5. Wow... yikes. I figured Gilgamesh was going to have queues during the first free month and possibly onward, but if SE does a population lock, that's going to suck for a lot of people who were planning to play on Gilgamesh after Open Beta/Early Access.
  6. What do you mean by 'lock?' Is that like a limit to how many characters can exist on a server? Is that... is that really a thing? I thought high population servers in most MMOs just had queue times to get in during peak hours.
  7. The majority of 4chan is not going to Gilgamesh. They will be split between Ultros and Cactuar, with another group of stragglers on Gilgamesh. The worst of the community will not be concentrated on Gilgamesh, but that doesn't mean there won't be others who are just as bad (if not worse).
  8. Like Freyar said, I would recommend upgrading both. I would go for the i5s if money is a concern - it has good cost/performance while still being a nice improvement over what you have now. If you don't do much heavy gaming other than FFXIV I see no reason to get anything more fancy than the i5, although you might have to upgrade your CPU sooner than if you were to get an i7, which is something you'll have to think about. Since most games these days feed off your GPU rather than your CPU, you should be set for a good while with a moderate CPU upgrade. With that being said, I'd definitely look more into upgrading your GPU if both is not an option. To be honest, I really don't know too much about nVidia cards, so I can't really point you in the right direction there. Just find the card that has the best cost/performance ratio and you should be okay, right? Just be careful it doesn't burst into flames (figuratively) like mine did! Thank the Gods that ARR is so much better optimized, even my old toaster can run it.
  9. I'm absolutely horrible with Skype, but I'd love to join the chatroom. Skype name is miscy1122. I think...

    Hiya!

Wah! Thank you everyone for the kind welcomes. m(_ _)m I actually played on a private server, LLRO, for the longest time, since I was too poor for the monthly fee iRO had at the time... Haha, you'll find in time it's much easier to assume I've seen an anime than ask if I have... Sword Art Online was pretty, well-animated and had good music. They handled the MMO aspects of it pretty well and it was enjoyable in that regard. However, I have absolutely nothing nice to say about the plot and characters, as they are overly cliche and way too self-inserty. I'm a pretty harsh judge when it comes to anime, though. Thanks so much! I might just do that.

    Hiya!

Hey there everyone! Before I start, I just want to let you all know - I'm a complete idiot when it comes to RP! There, I said it. While I've been vidya gaming and MMO'ing since I was a wee sprout, my RP experience is limited at best. I messed around with it in RO, never really serious. On especially boring nights, I would foray into Goldshire and Stormwind on Moonguard to watch the spectacles (and there were always spectacles). While I understand the concept behind RP and how it's done, I haven't the slightest clue as to how to apply any of my knowledge of it in-game. Anyway! I have a lot of work to do in that regards, but I'll do my best! A little bit about me, I'm a hermit female living in Philadelphia, who spends way too much time playing video games and watches way too much anime. I'm new to FFXIV - I signed up for the beta and got in on Phase 2, but didn't play till phase 3, har! I'll be playing on Balmung with a few friends from WoW who are definitely not RPers. To be honest, I had absolutely no intention of ever RPing but once I played through some of the beta I felt like I was absolutely wasting this game if I didn't RP in such a fabulous world! I like to write a lot, so I figured I'd try my hand at it for once. Wow I talk a lot. Anyway, that's it I guess... Hopefully I'll get my act together by OB so I don't embarrass myself in front of the vets. Wish me luck!
