I can't find it now (though I haven't looked too much into it) but I think I remember a question about how teleportation actually works. I'll also have to go back and rewatch some of the Titan cutscenes where Y'shtola explains it. Basically what someone suggested was that when it happens our bodies are transformed into the raw aether and rejoin the Lifestream (as you mentioned). But how do we know where to go? Our souls then guide the part of the Lifestream that's still us to the desired aetherite and then we reform. So perhaps the souls aren't necessarily a part of the "aether cycle" but instead some sort of separate entity? Not sure on this one, because I haven't gotten the vibe that souls are aether-based. That could just be that I'm not far enough in the storyline, though.

Hello and welcome! That's quite an interesting name you've chosen there. I won't judge, however. I've seen many fine and fun people to RP with that have had all kinds of names. I highly recommend looking at the Role-Play Handbook to start. It has so much good information to help you get started. Free Companies are much like guilds in other games. Linkshells are just chat channels. You can be in only one FC, but up to 8 Linkshells. The Linkshell Hall has a listing of many of the IC/OOC linkshells available, and you can even sort to only see the ones on Balmung. There are a couple of OOC linkshells listed there (such as Intermission and the LFRP ones) that can be a good springboard for finding RP. It also helps a lot to unlock the airships from the level 15 story quests so you can get around to the other cities, but from the looks of it you're well on your way in that regard. Once again, welcome to the community!

Hello and welcome! Always happy to see new faces around here. Along with the ones mentioned above, you can find a number of Linkshells to join a the Linkshell Hall. You can even sort by server! Please note that we're undergoing a bit of clean-up in the area, so not all of the Linkshells listed are currently active. It should be tidied up soon, though! As to your lore question, there's lots of information here in the RP Discussion board. A quick search should help you find what you need, but for a sort of repository you can check out the Lore section in the Role-Play Handbook as well as the RPC Wiki. I hope you enjoy yourself with this wonderful community!

Hello and welcome! Glad you rolled on Gilgamesh! I know a few scholarly types that would probably love to chat with your character about all manner of whatever it is you bookworms tend to chat about. S'anhu's not the reading type, but he's part of a crew under someone who calls himself the Scholar Captain, so he gets along well enough with those who are. Feel free to add me in-game! I'm almost always up for some random RP!

My FC (Pirates of a Wayward Star) are certainly on the criminal side of things. We may not be able to join up, but I can definitely see potential in being business partners. We need more friends. And also we need to do more pirate-y activities. We've been lacking lately. You can check out our thread here and our site here. Feel free to hit us up!

That's actually a smart idea. It can definitely get hectic in an area where there are lots of separate conversations and I often find myself looking out for a familiar name to make sure I don't miss anything. I can't always read the conversations of others, as much as I try. A good thing to help with this (and avoid spelling errors/mistakes) are some of the macro placeholders. You can use and and all those in Say and they'll show up with the proper names. It can make some of the longer/more difficult names to type stand out since it'll be their full character name, as well.

Hello and welcome! Olofantur has provided all the excellent resources you need to find any other RP out in the wild, as per usual. So I'll just say we're glad to have you on Gilgamesh! And I'm glad you found a good group like Driftwood!

Ick. Queue times are a little harder in the low-level dungeons especially as a DD class. Even with parties with a tank it can take a little longer than usual to find that last healer. However, if we're on at the same time just hit me up and I'll be happy to run dungeons with you! (Assuming RP isn't going on which lately has taken up a lot of my time.) I'm S'anhu Tia on Gilgamesh. I have some of each class near that level so I can fill whatever role you'd need. I can also hopefully help you get into one of the OOC LSes. I think the first one is full right now, so maybe someone can sneak you in on the second or third. Amaare Margolis (Rock Sandbourne here on the site) is the character who runs the gig so you can send him a tell if he's online and he can likely set you up, as well.

Welcome! We're always glad to see new faces around here! And don't worry, Google was the way I found my way here, as well. In regards to Linkshells the best place to find one is the Linkshell Hall. You can sort by server, as well. Look through them and see what tickles your fancy. We are going through a bit of a clean-up period, though, so not all of them may be active. The RPC Wiki is a great place to start to learn about lore, as well as a few threads in the RP Discussion section. The Role-Play Handbook also has a section on lore with a bunch of helpful links. Once again, happy to have you here!

I've also heard (haven't been in-game today) that this FATE here will also award parcels. It's the one where you fight a big Dodo. EDIT: The name's Tender Buttons.

The problem with this is, such a passive emote doesn't give the characters anything to RP off of. They may not react to your character's idle arching of brow and vague look, but that doesn't mean they aren't open to interacting with your character. If you wanna get involved with a scene you see, you've gotta be proactive - especially ICly, but OOCly can help as well. This exactly. S'anhu's hardly ever a very observant guy. When I do see some with this kind of passing interest I'll try to stretch out a bit and make him glance around and notice or something, but I'm also very bad at knowing how to draw people in. I'm always totally open to anyone waltzing up and joining in or interrupting or any of that, but maybe I'm just horrid at leaving openings.

A member of Pirates of a Wayward Star from Gilgamesh here, checking in! We're very active and currently embroiled in some major plot progression.

How does the community treat the day/night cycles?
S'anhu replied to Flickering Ember's topic in RP Discussion
Haha, I understand this so much. Sometimes we acknowledge the rain while we RP, but if we do it every single time then our characters spend an absurd amount of time chatting in the rain. On topic: I tend to think of it as the time of day when the RP starts, as well. Sometimes things will have to happen at a particular time of day, so I like to stay flexible. As a general fallback, evening is often what I'll go with if I ever sit around at a tavern or the like, since that's usually what kind of time you'd see my character in a place like that. -
This Model Viewer may provide some help. Just click on the crossed Axes to see the player characters. They have every item (as far as I've looked) and they even allow you to change the race/gender of the model. Though they don't put in the actual model, this can sometimes affect dimensions of the outfit. It's far from perfect and it doesn't allow color options, but you can get a peek at what some things will look like. EDIT: Haha, great minds think alike! Olofantur has some good talk about some of its downsides that I'm simply unfamiliar with, as I don't use it too often.

Hello! We're glad to have you here! The linkshells are an excellent place to start. You can ask around in the OOC channels for RP and get connected with people. If you find one you like you can ask or apply to join and you'll likely be welcomed with open arms! And of course if you need any help with backstory many here would be happy to offer help or suggestions or even act as a sounding board for ideas. Myself included. This may not apply to you since you seem to want something more organized, but an alternative is to try some random RP in some of the cities. I know for a fact Limsa is usually bustling around peak hours. Check out The Bismarck or the Drowning Wench and you can usually find some people sitting about RP-ing.

I did not mean for this to turn into such a book. Sorry! tl;dr - Good points in this thread. I went with a good-ish guy because I'm a weenie. But also because I want him to face reality and grow. I may really want to do a baddie now. There have been a ton of good points in this thread for why people don't want to be badguys. And maybe now we've had ample discussion and I'm just throwing my pennies into an empty hallway. Still, this is a topic I'd like to weigh in on. -What is the hesitation with playing a criminal mind, or any "baddy" for that matter? I think this one's been answered well enough. Some can't really get into the head of a character like that, or maybe some people just want to be the hero. Others, like me, don't want to run the risk of being shunned for playing a bad character, well, badly. There's certainly nothing wrong with any of that. -Are there any with characters like the one described in the second observation? If so what inspired you to go that route as opposed to the other? The one character I have certainly fits into this category. He's very much a good person, even if he does illegal things. He's loyal, tries to be friendly, looks for the good in people, and can be idealistic to a sickening degree. Now why did I make someone we've all seen twenty-thousand times over? I made a young, naive character not because I'm wildly uncreative and a terrible writer (though if we're being honest, that's a bit of it), but also to give me a bit of a crutch. I haven't done any RP in an MMO, and it's been years since I did any RP at all. So I decided a fresh-faced easy-to-play male would allow me some leeway for when I make mistakes as the writer. I try to do my research and be careful, but I didn't want to mess up and push people away. Of course having a boring one-dimensional character is more than enough to get people away from you without even interacting. So S'anhu is not all happiness and sunshine. Even though he's hard-headed and idealistic, I didn't want him to join a group of people that are wholly good and fight for what's right. I wanted his story to be one of facing the harsher realities of life, which is why I was happy to be invited to the Pirates of a Wayward Star. In order to save his friends, he recently killed two men for the first time, and he's having to deal with the mental and emotional trauma that comes with it. At the same time he's recently fallen for a girl whose business it is to deal in secrets. She offers comfort, but can he trust her? How will he cope with the thoughts that he is a murderer? Will he freeze up next time he gets in a similar situation? And if he does deal with his demons, will he stick around in his relationship? Are his feelings genuine or are they simply because she offers support in a difficult time for him? I could have made a jaded character and dealt with this kind of stuff in backstories, but it's very fun to do it with other players and allow his current friends help him through this and grow as a person. Maybe he will be jaded someday, and perhaps if things go very south he can become warped enough to be a baddie himself. But it's this process and internal struggle that I find more appealing to RP. I also tend to be a very reactionary player. I have some personal points and things that S'anhu will have to deal with, but pretty much the rest of it I do by the seat of my pants. Bad guys have a lot more responsibility and planning to do, from what I've seen. If they're not a proper threat then the "good guys" will just jump all over them, beat them away, and then they're done like the latest Monster of the Week. And it's no fun to put lots of work into a character only to have him or her beaten back so easily. That's all just me, though. -Are there any with characters like the one described in the first observation? If so what inspired you to go that route as opposed to the other? I have none right now. I will admit, though, that this thread has made me reconsider who my next character will be. I certainly want a different kind of character, and maybe now I can feel a little more confident in my skills so I can push my comfort zone. Should my character need some more lively subjects for research, I'm sure he could get involved with The Blackwater Company. But for now I'm keeping my focus on one character. He's a bit of a handful as-is. If I roll another my already-slow progression will come to a grinding halt. I also need to flesh out this new character more. He's going to need a lot of lore-reading, and I'll probably have to do some storyline spoiling to get him up in any reasonable amount of time. Eventually! -Do you agree or disagree that there needs to be some sort of balance struck? I definitely think that it's difficult to have a good story without proper conflict. But this can also be done with a difference of ideologies. I guess what I really want to say is I am in full support of more baddies. And I'm sure as people get more comfortable or get settled in with their current characters more will show up. I do want to say that Ambrosia is an excellent place to be. Wayward Star goes there pretty often. Unfortunately it seems that our stuff keeps catching up to us every time. And just about the only time I've seen Y'vali was when I was new and still very nervous. ;_; I'm sorry! It's not your character, I promise! I'd love to get a little more into the dealings that go on there, though. From what little bits of information I've gotten IC it sounds like there's a ton of excellent RP going on there. Now that would be a way to drop poor S'anhu into the deep end of "harsh realities." There should be plenty more interaction come Masquerade time, though. *tosses his two cents to clatter across the floor and runs out*

Big thanks to the hosts and the staff! I had a blast. Excellent drink service by the way. Thankfully I had a good excuse to find a different bar. I can definitely see S'anhu coming back to the next one!

Welcome! All this talk about Grindstone has me a bit interested, myself. I wish I were good at multiple characters, because that sounds like a blast! I was also recently taught that alt+L will cycle through your different linkshells. Alt+f is Free Company, alt+p is party, etc. Makes it easy to switch back and forth, depending on how your group is RPing.

I think that's a major issue right now. There are all these LS's with public places they do RP.. and none of us know where they are. I would love to see this thread happen. I agree. I think, past the leveling to a certain point thing, as much as I've been advocating walk up versus feeling obligated to join an existing group, I feel that many of the LS/FCs are trying to get their footing still and start some bonds in their respective groups. This might be causing a bit of an issue with members having plenty of free time to walk around and RP with strangers; initially slowing us down even more. Maybe one of the mods could start these threads? We could keep them civil and only list our places so they could be sticky'd for all the new people who join the RPC. *I should stress again that I hope we won't be trying to advertise our groups or pressure anyone to join us. Some people like to play the lone wolf and just wander around, getting a feel for different people rather than joining anything officially. I keep saying people can come to our things but I don't mean to pressure anyone myself =3=; ARGH! +1 to this idea! I really like the thought of sticky-ing them. In my short time lurking/joining I've seen the question of "Where can I find walk-up RP and how can I join?" pop up almost everywhere. I had/have it myself. I think people can list a particular area your group or character generally hangs out and maybe a blurb about what the group is (probably taken from the Linkshell threads) or the character's personality. Pressuring isn't what we wanna do, but getting some information on what everyone is like certainly can't hurt.

Hello fellow newcomer! I haven't gotten too much into RP, so I'm not sure of where to find it. Especially since you're on another server. From what I've read, tavern stuff in Limsa Lominsa and Ul'dah can net you some success. There should also be RP out and about. Other than that, there are also plenty of "Looking for RP" threads in the RP Discussion. Hope to see you around if/when I get a character on Balmung!

Oh, really? I guess it's not as hard as I feared to just pick up some RP. Thanks again for dragging me into all that! (<-- that's not sarcastic) 'Ello! He definitely originates from them, even if his family is kind of outcast. Good to see another of the tribe, though! We seem in short supply.

It was great to meet everyone! Kind of a whirlwind of an introduction to the group, but extremely entertaining.

[Gilgamesh] RP clothes fashion show! TBA
S'anhu replied to Gideon Aryeh's topic in Chronicled Events
Male models, you say? My Seeker would be up for it. He's kinda just looking for work, and it would seem easy enough to him. -
Thanks for the kind words! I'm surprised at how easily fleshing out character backgrounds came back to me. If anyone is willing to start something up with me, feel free to add me as a friend, or PM me here, or whatever! I finally got some of the backstory up on the wiki (link in the sig).

I've been putting a bit of thought into this for S'anhu. His biggest flaw is his immaturity. He doesn't handle responsibility well, which is the real reason he struck off on his own. He didn't want to deal with his family issues so he hit the road instead of facing them. I'm going to have a lot of fun developing him as he learns his lessons without the support he's used to. He's also quite sheltered and naive. He really only knew his smaller tribe and the occasional trader. Now he has to meet new people from all walks of life, and he has no way of knowing who he can trust and who will swindle him.
