  1. Welcome back! I hope you enjoy your time here.
  2. Welcome to the RPC, Geneticdork! As you can see, there's plenty of RP scattered across the entirety of Balmung, so you're bound to find something you like. If you ever catch sight of Averill on your wanderings - he's usually between Ul'dah and Gridania - don't hesitate to say hi! I'm always IC and always up for some chatter.
  3. I've been trying to create a page for my second character, but there's no create page link where there used to be. Is this intentional, or is there a bug in the wiki?
  4. Welcome to the RPC, Styrbryda! If you even find yourself in Ul'dah or Gridania and you see me floating about, don't hesitate to say hi!
  5. Welcome to the RPC! I'm sure Averill would happily buy Brendt a drink if they stumbled across one another.
  6. There have been some excellent responses - I've been very interested in the explanations you've offered. Averill's Virtue is Fortitude. He resolved to live on the road and has done so for just under a decade. His circumstances have changed considerably since that day, his membership in the Adventurer's Guild and a home at the Roost being some of the biggest changes. However, he still believes whole-heartedly that his wanderlust is who he is, and as a result refuses to settle for too long in any one place in spite of the obvious benefits. Averill's Vice is Envy. There is always someone who has fought a bigger monster. Always someone with a better tale to tell. Someone with more experience in survival than he. He welcomes them with open arms, sure that he can learn something from them, but several layers deep he habors a desire to experience those tales for himself. Without someone to check him his taste for danger, coupled with a desire to best his peers, borders on the extreme.
  7. This is based incredibly loosely on White Wolf's New World of Darkness system. NWoD has characters select one Virtue and one Vice that roughly defines that character, and rewards them for fulfilling either of them. Let's bring this to your character. Pick one Virtue and one Vice, and explain why both is an intrinsic part of your character's personality. Note that despite their names, these traits are not necessarily good or bad things; a Virtue could just as easily manifest as a fatal flaw, and a Vice may end up as a redeeming trait. It's all about context. The Virtues and Vices listed in the core rulebook are: Virtues: Charity - Your character has an innate desire to help others, even at risk of loss or harm to themselves. Faith - Your character is able to forge meaning and resolve from chaos and tragedy. Fortitude - Your character will withstand overwhelming temptation or pressure to alter their goals, even at great personal cost. Hope - Your character refuses to let others give into despair, even though doing so might risk their own goals or well-being. Justice - Your character will do the right thing - to the letters of a code of conduct, from the law to religious commandments - even at the risk of personal jeopardy. Prudence - Your character will resist a greatly beneficial opportunity to further his goals, even if refusal will cost them later on. Temperance - Your character believes in moderation in all things, and will resist any excessive indulgences despite any obvious rewards it might offer. Vices: Envy - Your character is never satisfied with what they have. There is always someone else who has more, and your character has no qualms with taking it. Gluttony - Your character makes any sacrifice to feed his insatiable appetite for the next pleasurable high. Greed - Your character believes there is no such thing as having too much. If that means snatching someone else's hard-earned reward just to feather one's next, that's the way it goes. Lust - Your character is consumed by a passion for something, and uses any means at their disposal to satisfy that lust. Pride - Your character believes unswervingly in their own ability, and will take any opportunity to exert their wants (not needs) over others at some risk to themselves. Sloth - Your character avoids hard work at every opportunity, even if it risks jeopardy to themselves or others. Wrath - Your character is easily consumed by anger, and will lash out even when doing so is potentially dangerous, inappropriate, or entirely unwarranted. I'll post mine in a little while. Have fun!
  8. Thank you for the responses! You've definitely shed some light on the whole thing. Whilst I don't think I'll be joining an FC just yet, I'll certainly give the Linkshell Hall a gander.
  9. I've seen roleplaying companies about, but never really considered joining one. After all it's not really in Averill's character to join an organisation. I can't help but wonder, though - and my question is in the title, so let's stipulate. First up, how do Roleplaying FC's differ from regular ones, besides the obvious. Secondly, how would joining an FC influence my character's story? What would be expected of him? Third, on the off chance I do want to join one, which FC would you recommend? Thanks in advance for answering my questions!
  10. For Averill, names are a mutable thing. As one who abandoned his first surname upon leaving home, adopting the last name Rooks in honour of his saviour on the road, he considers them to be at least partially decided by the wearer of that name. That said, he always introduces himself with his full name, and refers to other people by their first. He isn't averse to nicknames, despite not employing them. He normally responds to Av, or in the case of his most recent companion, Mister Avs.
  11. Let's give this a go! (Mainly 'cuz I imagine that Averill and Laguna would end up as, like, massive bros.) Character Listing: [Roaming Bow] - Controls the ground with mid-to-long range bow attacks. Bravery Attacks: Quick Nock - Averill pelts the area in front of him with arrows, covering a small area. [Chase] Quote - "I can't miss!" Venomous Bite - A single, light shot from long range. Foe suffers DoT if they are hit. Heavy Shot - A short to mid-range shot, useful for knocking foe back. [Wall Rush] Quote - "Watch out!" Shadowbind - Non-damaging, but ties the foe to the ground for a short duration. Windbite - A special shot that launches the foe upon hit. Follow-up: Barrage - Averill darts about his foe, pelting them with arrows. [Floor Rush]. EX Mode: EX Burst - Clean Shot: [A powerful, single shot. Keep the foe at a distance for greater damage!] The way this would work would be a bit like Feral Chaos's EX Burst. For a set duration, Averill begins charging the attack in a special arena, and must do all he can to keep away from his opponent. The further they are at the end of the duration, the greater the bravery damage of the first hit is. It is then followed by HP damage. EX Effects: Regen: Vigor and stamina recover little by little, restoring HP. Critical Boost: Increases chance of bravery attacks dealing critical hits. Repelling Shot: [R+Square] A HP attack that causes Averill to jump back a large distance, giving him extra manoeuvrability. Swiftsong: Sharply increases movement speed. EX Quotes: Activating EX Mode: "These boots have seen more roads than most!" Repelling Shot: "Off I go!" Beginning EX Burst: "I'd start running. No, not you!" End of EX Burst: "This tale's... [shoots] finished!" Pre-battle: 1. "I'm set when you are!" 2. "I don't normally fight people..." 3. "Take care - I'm a quick shot!" 4. "Can't we talk instead?" Low HP at Beginning 1: "My boots are wearing thin..." Low HP at Beginning 2: "Not yet - come on!" Against a Strong Foe 1: "Just another roadblock!" Against a Strong Foe 2: "Heh, how about a drink after?" Against a Weak Foe 1: "I really wouldn't." Against a Weak Foe 2: "Alright then! You asked for it!" Character's Long Quotes: Warrior of Light: "How can your allies watch your back?" Garland: "I will be the end of your empty journey!" Firion: "Let me hear of your dreams, Averill." The Emperor: "All roads lead to my dominion." Onion Knight: "Enough with the questions already!" Cloud of Darkness: "Words descend into meaningless, mortal." Golbez: "You, too, flee from your shadow." Cecil: "Your cavalier attitude concerns me." Kain: "Can you smile 'till the very end?" Bartz: "What do you mean, you don't like chocobos?" Exdeath: "You cannot flee the Void." Gilgamesh: "Enough expository banter!" Terra: "Are you truly free?" Kefka: "Kehehe! I'm gonna obliterate that grin!" Cloud: "Can you fight with that weight on your shoulders?" Sephiroth: "I see your darkness." Tifa: "I hope you know how to shoot straight!" Squall: "Take this seriously." Ultimecia: "Your past lies ahead of you, vagrant." Laguna: "Now you I can get along with!" Zidane: "Sorry, but I'm stealing the limelight!" Kuja: "Your theatrics are but a prelude to my performance." Tidus: "My story's not ready to be told yet." Jecht: "I've got no time for chit-chat!" Yuna: "I hope you get to keep walking." Prishe: "Ain't you a curious one?" Shantotto: "Your words are in error, wanderer!" Vaan: "So... no flying? That sucks." Gabranth: "No obligations or resolve. You will fall before me, mongrel!" Lightning: "I don't care for stories." Chaos: "You are but a sum of your memories!" Averill's Long Quotes: Warrior of Light: "How hard can it be to smile?" Garland: "I don't care for running in circles!" Firion: "Let's turn those dreams into memories, you and me." The Emperor: "I'll outrun your chains!" Onion Knight: "What made you put on that armour?" Cloud of Darkness: "Hey, er... I got some spare clothes if you want 'em." Cecil: "There are two sides to every story. Let's hear yours!" Kain: "My neck's starting to hurt, watching you." Golbez: "Those are some heavy chains..." Bartz: "Get that feather away from me!" Exdeath: "Y'know, plants are surprisingly tasty." Gilgamesh: "That's a neat trick!" Terra: "Your past can't hold you down." Kefka: "I can't have you destroying my roads!" Cloud: "That blade isn't just a physical weight, is it?" Sephiroth: "You must have some tales under that belt." Tifa: "Let's see if you can get close enough." Squall: "It's easier to smile, wouldn't you agree?" Ultimecia: "Keep my past where it is, if you please." Laguna: "Every direction is worth travelling!" Zidane: "You can't steal words, kid!" Kuja: "I'm not one for stage plays." Tidus: "You're not the sitting type, are you?" Jecht: "I guess everyone has a tough father..." Yuna: "You can choose your path!" Prishe: "I thought Elezen were taller?" Shantotto: "Prose over poetry!" Vaan: "I'd rather not take a ride with you, Sky Pirate." Gabranth: "Are you wearing that armour, or hiding behind it?" Lightning: "You're allowed to drop your guard around friends." Chaos: "There's no thirteenth seat among the Twelve!" RPC Character Long Quotes: Crooked Tarot: "I don't need gil where I'm going." Edgar: "You're quick. Fought quicker." Oscare: "I thought one hunted beasts?" Yvelont: "I try and avoid snake bites." Victory: 1. "I guess that does it." 2. "How about a drink?" 3. "I can't stop here!" 4. "Not bad, not bad!" Low HP 1: "That'll be a tale to tell..." Low HP 2: "Phew... Let's not do that again." Strong Opponent 1: "A worthy experience!" Strong Opponent 2: "Let me hear your story." Weak Opponent 1: "Sorry about that!" Weak Opponent 2: "Onto the next." Defeat: 1. "I guess this is my stop..." 2. "Maybe... a little break..." 3. "No! Not here!" Strong Opponent 1: "That's quite a wall to scale." Strong Opponent 2: "Sorry, Rooks..." Weak Opponent 1: "Those were some lucky shots!" Weak Opponent 2: "Is this really all I can do?" Penelo comment: "He's nice, but he's too curious! Can't we just chat normally!?" This was great fun! It got me thinking about all the relationships he might have in a game like this. As an added bonus, here's the song that would play as his battle theme: lYqOKw5NzY0 Had a poke at EX and Bravery attacks! Next time I swing around it'll be for more RPC Character quotes and HP attacks. This has been good fun!
  12. If you want to get on Balmung, the sweet spot in terms of time for me was 11:00GMT. I got on without a hitch then, but before that point I was locked out. That said, welcome to the RPC! The forum roleplays have already been mentioned, so I'll just extend a welcome and offer up Averill if you would like to roleplay with him.
  13. Duly noted! Averill wanders between the two places with variable frequency. Alternatively, if you add me as a friend (or if I do the reverse), we can just schedule something. Your call. Actually that will be great in scheduling a meeting. I don't want to break character and end up having to hunt ya down just to find ya~ When is the next time you'll be on? I'll try to finish up here quickly to catch you. Welp, I've got generally flexible hours for the time being, but I'm updating my wiki and watching Iron Man at the moment. I'll probably be online again around about 16:00~17:00 GMT. : )
  14. Sadly Umi doesn't go to Ul'da much, mostly because she hates seekers and there always seems to be a bunch there... However, if you get a random whisper while your in Gridania that will be me! Can't wait to test the waters with ya~ Duly noted! Averill wanders between the two places with variable frequency. Alternatively, if you add me as a friend (or if I do the reverse), we can just schedule something. Your call.
  15. Welcome to the RPC, Umi! Averill is normally around and IC both in Gridania and Ul'dah, so I'll keep my eyes open if you're around and up for some RP.
  16. He doesn't have it yet, but I'm planning a story wherein Averill overcomes his fear of aided transport (airships, boats, chocobos etc.) through the aid of a gentle chocobo who comes to his aid. It's all still a work in progress, though.
  17. On the forums and in-game, RP is very much alive if you're willing to get stuck in and drop the first line! Someone is normally around to pick you up. In terms of lore, our wiki has a fairly comprehensive guide for you to peruse at your leisure. You can even add a character page of your own, like this one! Furthermore, there's a directory for the two main roleplaying servers; one for Balmung, and one for Gilgamesh. Be sure to set up shop there so people know how to contact you and what kind of RP you're looking for. Finally, RP in A Realm Reborn falls on all parts of the scale - whether you want a relaxed tavern chat or a constructed, multi-part saga for you and your friends, there's something for everyone; and this is me speaking from both sides of said scale. I hope you enjoy your time here. If you ever have any questions, or would like someone to get the ball rolling with, drop me a message online or in-game.
  18. I lol'd. This thread is pretty good so far. Mine's not really humorous, but I think it's a nifty (and utterly broken) idea: Aetheric Mega Burst Cast: 5s Recast: 600s MP Cost: All TP Cost: 1,000 Range: Self Radius: 0.0y T'rahnu pours the entirety of her aetheric reserves into a single devastating attack, draining all of her MP and TP and reducing her HP to 1. Increases the potency of her next action by 1000%, grants it a 12y AoE that blinds and silences enemies within its radius for 20s, and knocks them back 10y. The spectacle that occurs may stun onlookers for a random duration. Combine with Dragoon for maximum fireworks. I should note that T'rahnu has no casting classes and no aptitude for magic whatsoever, so no shenanigans with an empowered Flare or somesuch. Missed opportunities, I know. I saw this skill. And thought about this dude.
  19. Oho, we've had some great skills so far! Here's my take on a skill Averill might have, as well as some reasoning behind it. For starters, he's a hunter, not a fighter. He's spent seven years on the road hunting his own food, and rare is the time when bandits might take him unawares. As a result, he would have something like this conditional Action: Clean Shot Cast: Instant Recast: 100.00s Range: 40y Delivers an attack with a potency of 150. Additional Effect: If target is non-human, potency is 300. Acquired: ARC Lv.10 Affinity: ARC BRD A quick and simple action to personify someone who is general loath to take a person's life. On the flipside, I initially entertained this Trait: The Roads Less Travelled Discovering a new area confers an additional 5% EXP for each area away from the character's home nation (Max 40%).
  20. An email flashes into your inbox. A magical, wonderful email straight from Square Enix's Naoki Yoshida. It presents you with a golden opportunity. You get to design one Action or Trait for your character. Any class, any level, with one condition; it has to fit your character's flavour. What do you design? How does it work? What does it cost? Does it work with other skills? How does it fit your character? What is it called? I'll post mine after this film's finished. Let's hear yours!
  21. Averill's father, Dawson, was a decidedly negative influence on the wanderer. From a young age he had no reason to want or earn anything in life, and drifted through education on his father's status. When Averill was finally pushed by his father to join the Arcanists, apathy turned to resentment, and he fled. That same night, he was found by the Roegadyn who gave him the courage to live as a vagrant; an Adventurer by the name of Rooks. In exchange for Averill's story, Rooks challenged every belief that he had once held dear, moulding him more over the course of a night than Dawson had managed in nineteen years. Rooks taught him how to hunt and survive on the road, and to this day Averill bears the surname Rooks to honour his saviour.
  22. Averill's only personal effect is his weapon. A wrapped maple bow, well-weathered after years of continued use, he takes the time to repair and maintain it to the best of his abilities - he's lost count of the number of times he's had to restring it. He received the bow from a Roegadyn adventurer, the night he ran away from his home. The adventurer happened across Averill at his most desperate; cold, hungry, and completely alone. In return for explaining his situation, Averill received a night's worth of training in the ways of hunting and surviving on the road. At the end of it all, the Roegadyn - who called himself Rooks - offered Averill the bow to aid him in his decision to take life to the open road. He's kept it close at hand ever since.
  23. I had a quick look at L'yhta's wiki, mainly her personality. From the pool of voice actors that I know, and my limited understanding of L'yhta, maybe Michelle Ruff? Her rendition of Katherine in, well, Catherine, might suit her - a combination of eloquence when she's calm and incredibly aggressive when slighted seems like it could work (from 5:50): HpFeuzBK8Gk I don't know, though. I reckon I'd have a better idea if Averill interacted with her at some point. After the initial spasms of joy at the thought of Liam O'Brien voicing Averill, I decided to think a little more seriously about it. I think Dave Wittenberg might be a good pick - his approach to Welkin Gunther, from Valkyria Chronicles, fits the kind of voice I imagine Averill to have (from 2:20): f5kwmzn2om4
  24. I've had some brilliant encounters thanks to the people who responded to my first request, and I look forward to developing those stories. However, after finally dusting off the last elements of his history, I'd like to request something specific. Averill's life on the road started when he fled from Limsa Lominsa, away from his father and the expectations he'd lived under all his life. However, the life of a wanderer is not without its strange encounters, and I'd like for him to encounter a Lominsan who has met Averill's father after his departure - someone who recognises the description and confronts him. If anyone would be interested in this, please drop me a line! I'd be happy to return the favour in terms of a character-focussed arc. In terms of time-zones, I'm GMT with semi-flexible hours. If you want more information on Averill's history, look no further than his wiki page.
