So after what's been an exciting, fun-filled weekend of beta leveling and getting my character concept fully locked in place I figured it might be a good idea to toss up a thread for people to get an idea of where characters hang out! I saw a good amount of RP while playing, which is definitely something I was thrilled to see. However, I never quite knew WHERE to go to indulge in some random, pick-up RP! Now I know the open beta isn't quite the time or the place for it, but still! That said, if anyone ever sees me ingame consider myself IC and available to RP! Half the magic of games without RP addons is just assuming everyone is IC all the time and engaging in roleplay! Without further ado... Where does Sylas hang out? The Drowning Wench has become a favorite of his, as well as fishing off of the various docks in Limsa Lominsa. When in Ul'dah, he's most likely to be found near the Gladiator's Guild. While spending time in Gridania, he's grown fond of the little nooks and crannies (I haven't explored it enough to give him a proper hang out yet!) Where does your character hang out/can be found regularly?

How can person A be held responsible for person B's ignorant, repulsive response to person A's thoughtful and polite argument? Because, and I'm not trying to be inflammatory here, common sense dictates that this is a volatile-enough subject to incite very wild reactions.

I can't think of any public forum in existence that wouldn't have taken the same action, honestly. It wasn't worded in a way that opened discussion and had no real place on the forums. It would have created 1 thing and only 1 thing at the end of the day. A massive shitstorm that only invites foul language and the kind of thing that has to be kept off of forums, much less beta forums. The contents would have been much better suited for an open-letter of sorts, not a post on their beta forums. Sorry to see you got suspended, though!

So! I was wondering a few things that the legacy-players might be able to answer. Do you have to complete the story missions up to level 20ish in ARR to access the ability to create a Free Company? I ask this because some friends and I want to create our Free Company right off the bat when Beta 4 kicks off, but none of us will be able to given the level cap of 20. I have a legacy character that's level 25, but obviously hasn't done any of the story missions that lead up to the joining of a Grand Company. Will I be able to log onto him and create a Free Company right away? How'd the Legacy players go about creating their FCs in beta 3? Did people have to grind through the story missions to join the Grand Company? Thanks in advance for the help!

Arguments For Marriage Equality in Eorzea
Arelian Solin replied to Dameon's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I think this is an overly cynical view. Yes, Square-Enix is a company, but a company is made up of individuals that have their own thoughts and feelings and moral concerns. The developers absolutely take pleasure in satisfying their customers and want to make them happy for reasons beyond profit. If they can be convinced that this is the right thing to do, I believe they'll do it regardless of whatever extremely minor effect it might have on their bottom line. The only reason they've not committed to doing so yet is likely much more due to a misplaced concern about offending their customers than it is about money. I agree completely! The developers are very clearly making a game they enjoy, and that they want other people to enjoy. Though you can look at several Japanese video game companies in recent years and notice that they're making decisions purely for profit, rather than for consumer happiness. Capcom, anyone? I do, however, firmly stand by the fact that Square Enix is teetering on the edge of financial ruin. FFXIV needs to succeed or else the company isn't going to last much longer. They are not in a place to be making decisions that can, for whatever reason, negatively impact their bottom line. I mean, hell, I wouldn't be surprised if the "waiting for feedback" line is simply to buy them some time to see if they can afford to make a decision that can lose them money. -

You don't know much about corporations, do you? That response they gave us? That's Corporatese for "We don't give a flying fuck about your desires, because a) you are too small a minority to negatively impact our profits and b) most of you will buy our product anyway." Corporatese is always polite, even when it's describing to you exactly how they are going to take their six-foot-long engorged penis and shove it directly up your virgin asshole. Because the bolded isn't ranting and raving. Surely not. I'm not saying being angry is wrong, I'm saying that it won't accomplish much. There's a mighty big difference between "GO AWAY!!!1" and, "Vote with your wallet." They have zero reason to care about you if you don't display that their decisions will negatively impact the sales figures for their game. Oh snap you found one person who in a thread said a thing, we're clearly all ranting raving shrieking babies! Good job! I'm really glad you just want us to go away and don't care about those of us who don't, you're a very supportive person. You really are reading into things way too much. Like, whoa. I'm saying that, and I'll bold it this time, why should a company care? The goal is to make money, not to make a statement or change the status quo. -

Square Enix is a company. They will do what is best for their wallets, especially with the company teetering on the edge of financial collapse as it is. The game gaining a higher rating in some countries can adversely effect sales in that country, perhaps even to the point of the game not being profitable. That is literally the last thing SE wants. Yelling, kicking and screaming accomplishes nothing if you don't vote with the one thing a consumer has the right to: Their money. If you dislike something a company is doing, don't support their product. The reason Microsoft changed the XBox One policies? It has nothing to do with any of the 'outrage' but has everything to do the sales numbers. It was easy enough to see on Amazon preorders that the PS4 was outselling the XBox one in preorders. It didn't take a genius to figure out why, either. So instead of ranting, raving and throwing out rhetoric to try and persuade people that you are right, I encourage people that are negatively affected by this (or anyone that feels passionately enough about the subject) to not support the game. Show Square Enix that they stand to lose more money by not offering marriage equality compared to risking having the game get an 18+ rating in other countries. Of course, this could all be bunk and they add it in regardless of what anyone says. I dunno. Either way, I think everyone can agree that Square Enix certainly opened an odd can of worms on themselves by adding this feature in the first place. It's not hard to look at international news and see that homosexual rights is a hot topic all over the world. -
I'm usually not very good at this, but I think I found a fairly decent song for Sylas!
-
Just as the topic says! I'm curious to see which Grand Company most Free Companies are going to associate themselves with on an IC and OOC level. Personally, I'm interested in this because it can have some IC ramifications. For instance, my character might not want anything to do with The Maelstrom, and thus won't be able to join any FCs associated with them!

I hate to break it to you, but it is pretty much a new game. Cataclysm was an expansion, it simply added content and re-vamped some old geography. A Realm Reborn is an entire re-design of the game's interface, graphics engine, environment, questing, battle system, features, and endgame content. It may not be a BRAND new game. But it's as close as you can possibly get. And if I'm allowed to play on a server without any pre-leveled characters on it in this new world? I'm going to. Sure can. Scenario 1: Say a legacy player has an item and wants to sell it. Now this item isn't for sale and since he's a Legacy player, and he has plenty of cash left over from 1.0. He can now charge whatever he'd like for this item before an actual economy is re-established simply because there are no other ones for sale. Scenario 2: Now let's say a non-legacy player puts up some crafting materials for sale. A legacy player sees they are fairly cheap, because again, there is no real economy in place yet. So he buys all of them, which sure might give the new player some profit. But what can he do then? Re-sell them all for MUCH more. Thus causing a problem. This particular issue happens even late game, but the key difference is late game there is an economy in place, so it has marginal success due to market influx. To actually try and form this into a discussion... In both of your scenario's you're assuming that the non-legacy player wouldn't do the same as the legacy player. Just for some food-for-thought... On a non-legacy server, there's going to be a big supply issue at first. The people that bumrush crafting classes will undoubtedly control the market for a long time, at least until others catch up with them. For example: Player is a crafter. He HQs a level 50 item within 3-4 days of the game coming out. Since an economy doesn't exist yet, that player can literally hold this item hostage and set whatever price they want. Player has 2 choices. They can try to make enough gil to purchase the item, perpetuating the economy's price for that item and keeping prices high. The second choice is to level crafting all the way up and craft the item for themselves. Most players will chose Option 1, thus keeping the item price high. The reason this dilemma might not exist on a Legacy server is the fact that several people will be coming into things with high-level or capped crafting to begin with. This already means that the market will have more of any one certain item available and the initial price will potentially be lower. I say potentially because there's always the likelihood of someone controlling the market, as you pointed out. There's no way to get around the fact that certain people will control the economy early on, be it on a legacy server or non-legacy. Everyone starts off equal on a non-legacy, but some players have already mapped out the optimized ways to get a craft to 50 and literally roll in the money.

I just wanted to say Thank you for this part. I've been trying to figure out how exactly my character could become a Paladin, since all of the lore available on them (at least in the places I know of) state that they're only Sultansworn. I'm not too concerned about the Curtana and Holy Shield bit, though it is a little lame. Not as bad as FFXI was, I think, but still a little tricky to work around if you ever do get a relic weapon.

You guys are really working yourself into a tizzy over something as trivial as server choice. Stop gettin' mad at vidya games, and just enjoy the fact that the admins here are allowing something like the discussion/split to even occur. They could have excused themselves from the situation entirely by not advocating for Gilgamesh being the next big server. Who cares if someone doesn't want to roll on a legacy server or if someone does? We're playing with so many hypotheticals that don't even matter. And again, it's a video game. It's roleplaying. Calm down. Deep breaths. Yes, I've expressed my own frustration at the community being split but this is disgusting behavior coming from everybody. There's no discussion to be had. Nothing anyone can say is going to sway anyone's feelings on the matter, and if anything the arguments and "discussion" are just going to prove the stereotype of roleplayers being overdramatic, hormone-driven teenagers with power-fantasies right. People are resorting to hyperbole, personal attacks, and examples that aren't even relevant to try and drive... what point home again? That Gilgamesh hates Legacy players? That Balmung won't be accepting to new folks? None of this is true, and even if it was. What's gained from spewing it everywhere? Oh. It divides the community further and drives people away from both communities. Let's stop spreading hateful language and all enjoy the game we're going to be given shortly. Choices are good. Wouldn't you rather we have nice discussions about the lore of the game or things we're looking forward to? Especially for the newer folks that are trying to figure things out and maybe unsure if they even want to roleplay to begin with. Nothing says, "Oh boy! I really want to be a part of that community!" like watching the two bicker and spit at each other simply because they can. Let's all just get along. It's easier that way. I promise.

I'll definitely be looking at the PVP! I've been super curious about it for a while and I'm excited to give it a shot.

Again, it's neither here nor there. I have no wish to bring up any drama in public, as I do my best to avoid such a thing. The original little bit was a slightly immature slip up, but I do stand by it. If you'd like to discuss it, PMs are an option! No need to derail the thread. Edit: To help keep things on track... I agree wholeheartedly. It's just frustrating in it's own little nagging way. Ultimately it's a video game, and people should do what they've gotta do to be happy! I'm thrilled to call Balmung my home for FFXIV and I'm thoroughly looking forward to hanging out with people in game. 22 more days. Ugh.
-
oh come on, that's very here AND there DO TELL It ultimately isn't, and I don't care to bring GW2 drama to this game. New start, yo! Anyway, my biggest frustration is stemming from the fracturing of the roleplay community. We're a small group to begin with. Why make it smaller and harder to find RP that we all enjoy? We're all in this for the same hobby at the end of the day. It's disheartening to hear that things are being split even further between Balmung and Gilgamesh with people going all over.
-
I just want to point out the irony of being afraid of negative-cliques and exclusive behavior from the Balmung community when the moderators of this forum and the (more or less) leaders of the Legacy RP community were kind enough to help out people that don't want to play on a Legacy server in some way. They could have told everyone to bug off and start your own community for a different, non-legacy server, as this site has been about the Balmung/Besaid community since 1.0. Instead? They helped people out by holding voting and putting up a section of the forums for Gilgamesh to chat and hang out. This is totally cliqueish and exclusive behavior. Totally. Let's not ignore the fact that any real benefits from Legacy will be null and void within 3-4 weeks anyway, on average. Sorry if I seem a little irritated about this. It's just incredibly rude, to me, to see people accuse (and yes, simply stating your fears is akin to accusing) this community of being full of cliques and hard to break into when the people on this site have been nothing but welcoming and helpful. They worked hard to create a great community throughout 1.0 and to see people so flippantly disregard that, while also using that community's website, is insulting. They deserve your thanks, not your arguments about not wanting to be a part of this community. There's also a hefty dose of amusement that stems from Amaare trying to lead a community. Yes, some of us remember your actions in GW2 on Tarnished Coast. That's neither here nor there, though.

You might know Sylas from... Pre Calamity: -A fighter at the Bloodsands. His own fair share of victories and defeats! -Trained at the Gladiator's Guild. Post Calamity: -Still fighting at the Bloodsands. Making less appearances. -Beginning to dabble in different magics, so his face has been seen at the Ossuary a few times. -The more scholarly sort might recognize him as a borrower of easy-to-read books in recent years. Mostly children's tales and things with pictures.

I. Basic Info Characters: Kaiten Tobukizu Primary character: Kaiten Tobukizu, Nigel Beaulieu, Sylas Peregrine (R-r-r-retired!) Linkshells: Man, it's a lot. Though I have The Coral Sea. Huhuhu. Primary RP linkshell: Middle Men II. RP Style Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy): Medium-Heavy. I'm 100% para-trash and I'm primarily here for RP, but I'm also into playing the game itself. I can almost always be pulled IC if I'm not in the middle of something, though! Views on RP combat and injuries: I'm all for RP combat, though I do believe that ingame strength = IC strength. Your level 1 will not beat my level 50 in a straight up brawl unless they get lucky. I'm also willing to use rolling systems, etc, etc. I'm pretty relaxed about it, to be honest. As far as injuries go, if my character is hurt my character is hurt. IC actions = IC consequences. Views on IC romance: While my typical answer is your stock: Oh, as long as things stay IC and it all develops naturally, well--my main character is 100% spoken for, so it'll be quite the trial to do anything romantic with him. That's not necessarily what I'm here for. However, to actually answer the question: Communication is key. I don't typically like romance-heavy plots and it's the easiest way for me to get bored. Sorry! Views on non-romantic RP (family ties, etc): Kaiten (my main) isn't likely to have much direct family--but close friends, distant relatives... People he's worked with in the past, that sort of thing? Totally awesome. Basically everything is fair game and I'm 100% here for all of that. Views on lore: Once upon a time I was super strict about my lore. These days I'm a bit more lax about it--if only because room for interpretation is important. Flagrant lore-breaking (like getting pregnant and birthing a child and having them be fully grown in the span of 2 days) is likely to earn a side-eye from me. At the end of the day, though, you do you. I'm happy to provide feedback and advice, but I'm never going to tell someone they can't do something in a universe where people can legitimately shoot laserbeams from their hands. Bad ideas aren't created--they're played. Meaning, a lot can be done in the lore. You just need to bend it just right. Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc): In general, /say is the only channel that I'm 100% IC in. I'll use the good ol' (( )) to denote if I'm speaking OOC. Party chat, linkshell, free company, tells--they're totally variable and depend on the context of the moment-to-moment and who I'm speaking to. III. Other Info [*]Country: USA! [*]Timezone: EST [*]Contact info: PMs on this site are preferred! Though, never be afraid to say hello ingame! Hey everyone! Relatively new guy here (I played 1.0 for a few weeks on-and-off). I'm really looking forward to the launch of the game and getting to know everyone on Balmung! Fun times abound! I'm coming over here from both WoW (WrA-Hordeside) and GW2! (Tarnished Coast). Some of you might have known me in GW2 as Arelian Alvingham or from WoW as Darexi. It's a pleasure to be here and I'm really looking forward to finally sinking my teeth into ARR.

Hello everyone! I'm not necessarily new around these parts, but I am returning from a lengthy break, so I thought I should post here! I'm just gonna answer these questions and see what happens. --MMORPG background Most of'em. Seriously. It's tragic. The only ones I haven't tried are the dozens upon thousands of korean F2P games. --RP experience I've been RPing since I was a wee lad, and I've been doing it pretty consistently ever since! --Character ideas/info I just posted Arelian's info riiiiight here! --How did you learn about the coalition? I was a part of it back when it formed and before I quit for a while, so I have returned to my roots! --What kind of a role-player are you aiming to be? Casual, moderate, or heavy? Moderate/Heavy. I like RPs. --Anything from real life youâre comfortable with sharing? (Work, school, hobbies, etc) Uhhh, I'm 22 and I play video games. They are my hobby and I want to make them for a living. Whee!
